Germany will seek to expand its digital capacities

Friday, February 23, 2018

Subject

Germany’s digital policy.

Significance

Germany's broadband network policy has a poor reputation, especially regarding its efforts to develop a fibre optics network. However, such criticism may not be entirely warranted, as the government’s policy has been relatively successful in achieving higher speeds.

Impacts

  • Digitalisation will increase the need for schools, universities and continuing education institutions to offer advanced computer training.
  • It will require increasingly sophisticated and expensive cybersecurity measures as new vulnerabilities emerge.
  • Greater internet access will increase pressure on the government to develop its e-government offering.
