Greek minerals industry will seek foreign partners
Tuesday, July 25, 2017
Subject
The mining and metallurgy industry.
Significance
The Greek mining and metallurgy industry (GMMI) is a major provider of raw materials to domestic steel, construction, cement and concrete companies. Greece is a global leader in the sale of such industrial materials as bentonite, magnesite and perlite. Mined in Greece, these minerals are of exceptional quality and are widely used in global manufacturing and construction.
Impacts
- Increased infrastructure investment in such ports as Piraeus and Thessaloniki will boost the international trade in GMMI products.
- Exploration of petrochemicals, both onshore and off, could improve Greek energy security.
- The rapidly increased indebtedness of the sector will depress corporate earnings through high interest payments.
