Vucic not new premier will control Serbian government

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

Significance

A period of intense speculation over the next prime minister, which accelerated after Aleksandar Vucic was sworn in as president on May 31, ended on June 15, when Vucic announced that his chosen successor would be Minister of State Administration and Local Government Ana Brnabic.

Impacts

  • From the start it will be made clear to Brnabic that she depends completely on Vucic.
  • There is so little distance between Vucic and the government that it will be very hard for him to avoid blame if things go wrong.
  • Political issues, such as EU accession or negotiations with Kosovo, will remain with Vucic and, to a lesser extent, Dacic.
