Danish government will need to appease nationalists

Wednesday, May 24, 2017

Significance

Stojberg admitted to a Danish newspaper wilfully insisting on applying the law without considering each case individually. In doing so, she may have ignored advice from ministry officials that she was breaking the European Convention on Human Rights. This follows the launch of a commission to look into irregularities in the tax ministry last week.

Impacts

  • The tax inquiry will not yield results for another six months at least.
  • Jensen could be forced to resign and see his chances of Venstre leadership undercut.
  • The SD and the DPP could move towards more serious negotiations over future power sharing, starting with meetings behind closed doors.
