Spain’s Socialists are likely to shift to the left

Tuesday, May 23, 2017

Significance

This comes after the last general election in June 2016, in which the PSOE lost more than half the votes it achieved at its peak in 2008.

Impacts

  • The PSOE will choose its new executive, proposed by Sanchez, at a party congress on June 16-18.
  • Approval of the 2017 budget next month, facilitated by a deal between the PP and the Basque Nationalist Party, will strengthen Rajoy.
  • The PSOE under Sanchez will adopt a more flexible attitude towards a possible agreement to end the standoff between Madrid and Catalonia.
  • Yet this is likely to have little impact on the confrontation that is expected in coming months.
