Panama crime fears may help strengthen regional ties

Friday, December 16, 2016

Subject

Security in Panama.

Significance

On December 1, it was reported that six mutilated bodies had been found in a pit outside Panama City, the suspected victims of drug traffickers. The discovery has fuelled fear among the population, which is deeply concerned about security and a potential increase in gang and drug cartel activity. Currently, border security is of particular concern, with neighbouring Colombia’s efforts to make peace with its two largest guerrilla groups creating unpredictable security challenges in the region.

Impacts

  • Operations targeting key gang figures may lead to increased infighting as new leadership structures emerge.
  • Closer border cooperation with Colombia could stem the number of US-bound illegal migrants passing through Panama.
  • It could also help prevent dissident Colombian guerrillas leaving the country to continue criminal activities in Panama.
  • Panama’s strategic geographical position could give it an inflated role in international counter-narcotics operations.
