Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to describe legal and political maneuvers that have occurred recently between librarians and publishers.

Design/methodology/approach

The article focuses on three events: two concerning actual and threatened legal action from publishers against librarians; another involving the resignation of librarians from an editorial board over a dispute with the journal's publisher.

Findings

The article exposes a growing tension between librarians and publishers in areas regarding free speech and copyright.

Originality/value

The article provides succinct overviews of these related events.
