A BAYESIAN APPROACH TO LIBRARY WORK
Abstract
Management of library resources takes place in a context of uncertainty. Statistical probability is suggested as a way of reducing this uncertainty. Analysis using Bayes′ Theorem enables the manager to calculate conditional probabilities when the outcomes are known, and to review probabilities when extra information is provided. Three practical applications (to library supply, user studies, and budgetary choices) are demonstrated.
