Abstract

Discusses various modes of interaction between suppliers and users of advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) and is based on empirical evidence originating from the study of 30 organizations representing ten suppliers and users. Highlights various key factors by closely scrutinizing the various modes of interaction during the implementation of various technological innovations. Notes that these factors are highly influential in the degree of success or otherwise for the implementation of AMT. In all, examines seven different types of innovation. These are: plastics injection moulding machines, CNC machines, computerized information systems, flexible manufacturing systems, material handling and supply, CADCAM and automated control systems. Reviews some relevant studies and discusses the critical factors in the diffusion of AMTs. Considers the benchmarking of the AMT’s implementation and finally, discusses the factors which determine the effectiveness of supplier‐customer interaction for the implementation of AMT.
