Abstract

The Chinese have a saying that “He who knows two cultures lives two lives”. It is an appropriate expression to recall as their country prepares for membership of the World Trade Organization. Membership talks will embrace technical issues such as establishment of trade tariffs and quotas. Political and economic differences will be aired too, but another issue will be deeply significant: the culture‐related contrasts in western and Chinese management styles. More understanding will be needed on both sides.
