Abstract

Japanese electrical and electronics giant Hitachi has publicized the levels of English it expects all its 60,000 employees to attain, starting from the day they sign up with the company. Newly‐hired employees are expected to have 500 points on the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) scale, which ranges from 10 to 990. Career‐track staff should have 600 points, section chiefs 650 and executives 800 points. The company has also established additional hurdles for potential executives who have cleared the 800‐point barrier, to motivate employees to keep on improving their English.
