Abstract

Purpose

This article focuses on management training at Red Carnation Hotels, which won a Greater London accolade in the latest UK National Training Awards. Explains the reasons for the training, the form it takes and the benefits it has brought.

Design/methodology/approach

Draws on information provided by the company's training and development manager.

Findings

Demonstrates that the training has helped to slash employee turnover, improve employee morale, boost room occupancy and increase profitability in the highly competitive hospitality industry.

Practical implications

Reveals that the finely tuned training programmes have given managers the tools and resources to improve their own skills and, in a trickle‐down effect, to pass on these innovations.

Originality/value

Shows how smaller companies can use their size to their advantage.
