Abstract

Purpose

To examine a comprehensive leadership‐skills and diversity program established by the US National Weather Service to bring about positive cultural change and improved organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The article is based on information provided by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and survey company Sirota Europe.

Findings

The article shows that, where diversity is promoted and supported by an inclusive environment, organizations can expect to see: the fostering of innovation; the creation of a safer working environment; higher levels of employee commitment, engagement and pride; a positive impact on customer satisfaction; and improved financial performance.

Practical implications

The article suggests key areas in which organizations can effect change and bring about a real improvement in performance.

Originality/value

The article will be of value to human‐resource specialists seeking to introduce a comprehensive workforce‐diversity policy in their organizations.
