The editors of this handbook are from the Future University (Japan), Stanford University (USA) and University of Ulster at Jordanstown, Newtownabbey (UK). They were faced with the enormous task of providing an acceptable handbook for such an important field. The publishers believe that they have produced a comprehensive and up‐to‐date coverage of this still emerging area. They have structured the text to embrace most of the main studies and the editors have collected together the major concepts that are relevant to such a reference text.

The book provides many applications that are particular to ambient intelligence and smart environments, which enhance the text. Including case studies of current important projects provides the intending reader with a fund of useful material.

Handbooks, of course, are primarily for reference and a means of providing information about current thinking. This book endeavours to do that in an organised way.
