Abstract

Purpose

To investigate and comment on changes in LIS during a lifetime in libraries, half of it spent in senior positions.

Design/methodology/approach

Narrative reminiscence.

Findings

Dramatic changes have occurred in the use of technology, management and attitudes to users, but most of them were initiated by non‐librarians. LIS needs more leaders and innovators.

Originality/value

Reflections on a lifetime in librarianship by one of its leading practitioners and the subject of this festschrift.
