Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the challenges of truck-sharing and effective ways of dealing with those in achieving supply chain collaboration and collaboration in transportation management (e.g. transport collaboration) for transport capacity expansion, and reducing carbon emission and traffic congestion for integrating environmental and social sustainability issues. This paper also reveals insights into successful shared-transportation and a reduction in empty trips.

Design/methodology/approach

This exploratory qualitative study was conducted by means of interviewing road carriers from the container transportation industry.

Findings

In a truck-sharing initiative, technical issues (e.g. carrying capacity) arise, some of which involve the container truck and some involving constraints that cannot be controlled, such as driving restrictions, seaport operating hours, and the presence of the large number of container categories pertaining to the industry. Therefore, a significant amount of “structural empty running” may always prevail. It should also be noted that some, seemingly vital, constraints can actually be changed, treated, or modified for better truck-sharing outcomes, such as building a foundation of trust and establishing coordination among road carriers.

Practical implications

A probable solution to the problem of increasing hinterland transport capacity is to make appropriate use of the huge number of idle truck slots that exist; this could be achieved by encouraging the acceptance of the challenges of truck-sharing realistically and suggesting an approach to handling them.

Originality/value

To broaden its appeal, truck-sharing initiatives must be able to overcome challenges by combining theoretical insight with an understanding of the practical aspects of such an endeavor. This original research fosters knowledge that is unique and which also has real-life applications in maritime logistics studies and supply chain literature for both port authorities and container road carriers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop Markovian model to obtain the transient probabilities to determine mean-time-to-failure and reliability function and further steady state availability of the repairable system. As the system parameters are uncontrollable factors; thus the life times, repair times and recovery/reboot time are assumed to be as uncertain or fuzzified distributions.

Design/methodology/approach

The fuzzy approach is introduced to investigate the reliability measures of load sharing repairable system which consists of two operating units and one standby unit. On the failure of an operating component, it is instantly spotted, located and sent for recovery procedures with coverage probability. In case of imperfect recovery, reboot takes place.

Findings

On the basis of extension principle and mathematical programming approach, the authors establish membership functions for system characteristics with the help of α-cuts. To demonstrate the practical validity of the proposed fuzzified model, numerical illustrations are performed.

Originality/value

The model proposed for reliability analysis may cheer up the continuance of the work towards more applications in repairable systems. Therefore, the reader is provided with useful intuition into the nature of fuzzy computations and practical amendments while measuring ambiguous data.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to advance knowledge of the transformative potential of big data on city-based transport models. The central question guiding this paper is: how could big data transform smart city transport operations? In answering this question the authors present initial results from a Markov study. However the authors also suggest caution in the transformation potential of big data and highlight the risks of city and organizational adoption. A theoretical framework is presented together with an associated scenario which guides the development of a Markov model.

Design/methodology/approach

A model with several scenarios is developed to explore a theoretical framework focussed on matching the transport demands (of people and freight mobility) with city transport service provision using big data. This model was designed to illustrate how sharing transport load (and capacity) in a smart city can improve efficiencies in meeting demand for city services.

Findings

This modelling study is an initial preliminary stage of the investigation in how big data could be used to redefine and enable new operational models. The study provides new understanding about load sharing and optimization in a smart city context. Basically the authors demonstrate how big data could be used to improve transport efficiency and lower externalities in a smart city. Further how improvement could take place by having a car free city environment, autonomous vehicles and shared resource capacity among providers.

Research limitations/implications

The research relied on a Markov model and the numerical solution of its steady state probabilities vector to illustrate the transformation of transport operations management (OM) in the future city context. More in depth analysis and more discrete modelling are clearly needed to assist in the implementation of big data initiatives and facilitate new innovations in OM. The work complements and extends that of Setia and Patel (2013), who theoretically link together information system design to operation absorptive capacity capabilities.

Practical implications

The study implies that transport operations would actually need to be re-organized so as to deal with lowering CO2 footprint. The logistic aspects could be seen as a move from individual firms optimizing their own transportation supply to a shared collaborative load and resourced system. Such ideas are radical changes driven by, or leading to more decentralized rather than having centralized transport solutions (Caplice, 2013).

Social implications

The growth of cities and urban areas in the twenty-first century has put more pressure on resources and conditions of urban life. This paper is an initial first step in building theory, knowledge and critical understanding of the social implications being posed by the growth in cities and the role that big data and smart cities could play in developing a resilient and sustainable transport city system.

Originality/value

Despite the importance of OM to big data implementation, for both practitioners and researchers, we have yet to see a systematic analysis of its implementation and its absorptive capacity contribution to building capabilities, at either city system or organizational levels. As such the Markov model makes a preliminary contribution to the literature integrating big data capabilities with OM capabilities and the resulting improvements in system absorptive capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper is devoted to presenting a systematic investigation on the mechanical model and nonlinear dynamic characteristics of spur gear system with and without input shaft crack.

Design/methodology/approach

Considering the backlash, load-distribution, time-varying meshing stiffness and sliding friction, the modelling of a 5DOF gear system is proposed. Likewise, stiffness and damping models under elastohydrodynamic lubrication are developed, and sliding friction between gear pair is also outlined. In particular, a cracked input shaft which affects the support stiffness is presented, and breathing crack in keyway is adopted. On this basis, the dynamic responses of a gear system with and without input shaft crack are examined using numerical method, and some classical response diagrams are given, illustrating the effect of the important parameters on the gear system.

Findings

Dynamic simulation demonstrates that there exist periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motions in the gear system, and rational speed of the gear pair has noteworthy effects on vibration characteristic. Besides, comparison between healthy and cracked condition of input shaft indicates that occurring of crack convert periodic motion to quasi-periodic or chaotic motion.

Originality/value

The results give an understanding of the operating conditions under which undesirable dynamic behavior occurs, and provide some useful information to design and diagnose such gear system with crack fault.

Abstract

The breakdown of laminar flow in the clearance space of a journal is considered, and the point of transition is considered in relation to experiments carried out with ‘bearings’ of large clearance. Experiments involving flow visualization with very large clearance ratios of 0.05 to 0.3 show that the laminar regime gives way to cellular or ring vertices at the critical Reynolds number predicted by G. I. Taylor for concentric cylinders even in the presence of an axial flow and at a rather higher Reynolds number in the case of eccentric cylinders. The effect of the transition on the axial flow between the cylinders is small. The critical speed for transition as deduced by Taylor, is little affected by moderate axial flows and is increased by eccentricity. The effect of critical condition on the axial‐flow characteristics of the bearing system appears to be negligible, again for moderate axial flows. Assuming that the results can be extrapolated to clearances applicable to bearing operation, the main conclusion of this paper is that the breakdown of laminar flow, which is a practical possibility in very high‐speed bearings, is delayed by eccentric operation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel system design and control algorithm of lower limb exoskeleton, which provides walking assistance and load sharing for the wearer.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the valve-controlled asymmetrical hydraulic cylinder is selected for driving the hip and knee joint of exoskeleton. Pressure shoe is developed that purpose on detecting changes in plantar force, and a fuzzy recognition algorithm using plantar pressure is proposed. Dynamic model of the exoskeleton is established, and the sliding mode control is developed to implement the position tracking of exoskeleton. A series of prototype experiments including benchtop test, full assistance, partial assistance and loaded walking experiments are set up to verify the tracking performance and power-assisted effect of the proposed exoskeleton.

Findings

The control performance of PID control and sliding mode control are compared. The experimental data shows the tracking trajectories and tracking errors of sliding mode control and demonstrate its good robustness to nonlinearities. sEMG of the gastrocnemius muscle tends to be significantly weakened during assisted walking.

Originality/value

In this paper, a structure that the knee joint and hip joint driven by the valve-controlled asymmetrical cylinder is used to provide walking assistance for the wearer. The sliding mode control is proposed to deal with the nonlinearities during joint rotation and fluids. It shows great robustness and frequency adaptability through experiments under different motion frequencies and assistance modes. The design and control method of exoskeleton is a good attempt, which takes positive impacts on the productivity or quality of the life of wearers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to establish a friction coefficient model relative to the rotation speed of a wet clutch engagement, which can predict friction coefficient under different stages of slipping velocity and different load pressures. In particular, the model has been improved by accounting the speed effect for the perdition of wet friction-element boundary friction, which is significant for understanding the friction mechanisms and for supporting the development of more efficient and related products.

Design/methodology/approach

This research investigated the mechanism of wet friction in a wet clutch engagement. A mixed friction model is established based on the asperity model and Newton’s law of viscosity. To obtain a friction coefficient computed by the model, the normal load shared by both asperities and lubrication fluid needs to be determined. Therefore, rough surface contact mechanism is analysed; a surface topography model is established; and surface parameters are obtained by means of surface topography measurement and reconstruction. Finally, verification of the mixed friction model is achieved.

Findings

Friction will be generated by both the asperity contact and the lubrication film shear relative to the rotation speed. And, the higher the relative speed, the larger the shearing power of lubrication film. It is caused by decrease in contact area of asperity. Surface morphology of a sintered bronze friction disk was obtained by a Laser-Micro-Test. The predicted results by the established model show that the total friction coefficient slightly reduced and then increased suddenly with speed. The surface topography model is responsible for the nonlinear behaviour of the asperity friction. Results of the simulation model are in agreement with those of the wet clutch engagement experiments.

Originality/value

This research is original and it is supported by the national defence project. The wet friction element which is applied on tracked vehicles is analysed for the first time. Through the model, the trend of the friction coefficient can be more accurately predicted. The problem of the wet friction plate modelling difficult is solved by using the mixed friction model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a preventive maintenance policy with continuous monitoring for a circular consecutive-k-out-of-n: F systems. A preventive maintenance policy is developed based on the system critical condition which is related to the number of working components in the minimal cut sets of the system. If there is at least one minimal cut set which consists of only one working component, the system is maintained preventively (PM) after a certain time interval and the failed components are replaced with the new ones to prevent the system failures. If the system fails prior to the preventive maintenance, the system is correctively maintained (CM) immediately by replacing the failed components.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical function of the expected cost rate for the proposed maintenance policy is derived. The costs of PM, CM, and replacement per component are considered. The optimal maintenance parameter, which is the PM interval, is obtained by enumeration, and the numerical studies are shown with various system and cost parameters. The performance of the proposed policy is evaluated by comparing its expected cost rate to those of the no-PM and age-PM policies. The percentage of cost increase from the no-PM and age-PM policies to the proposed PM policy is calculated and this value can represents how important the continuous monitoring in this policy.

Findings

The proposed policy outperforms other policies. When the cost of CM is high and the cost of PM is low, the proposed PM policy is more suitable.

Research limitations/implications

The system consists of identical components and the component failure times follow an exponential distribution. Continuous monitoring is considered, which means that the component states can be known at any time. Three cost parameters, cost of PM, CM, and replacement per component, are considered.

Originality/value

This paper shows a maintenance problem for circular consecutive-k-out-of-n: F systems. Many studies on this system type focused on the reliability estimation or system design problem. Previous study with this policy (Endharta and Yun, 2015) has been developed for linear systems, although the study used a simulation approach to estimate the expected cost rate. Also, Endharta et al. (2016) considered a similar method for the different types of system, which is linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system.

Purpose

The share of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the power system is increasing day by day. The RESs are intermittent, therefore maintaining the grid stability and power balance is very difficult. The purpose of this paper is to control the inverters in microgrid using different control strategies to maintain the system stability and power balance.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, different control strategies are implemented to the voltage source converter (VSC) to get the desired performance. The DQ control is a basic control strategy that is inherently present in the droop and virtual synchronous machine (VSM) control strategies. The droop and VSM control strategies are inspired by the conventional synchronous machine (SM). The main objective of this work is to design and implement the three aforementioned control strategies in microgrid.

Findings

The significant contributions of this work are: the detailed implementation of DQ control, droop control and VSM control strategies for VSC in both grid-connected mode and standalone mode is presented; the MATLAB/Simulink simulation results and comparative studies of the three aforementioned controllers are introduced first time in the proposed work; and the opal-RT digital real-time simulation results of the proposed VSM control show the superiority in transient response compared to the droop control strategy.

Research limitations/implications

In the power system, the power electronic-based power allowed by VSM is dominated by the conventional power which is generated from the traditional SM, and then the issues related to stability still need advance study. There are some differences between the SM and VSM characteristics, so the integration of VSM with the existing system still needs further study. Economical operation of VSM with hybrid storage is also one of the future scopes of this work.

Originality/value
