Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the intention to use blockchain technology (BT) in the context of supply chain (SC) operations through an integrated technology adoption framework using two well-known models, the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Moreover, the study looked at the direct effect of TAM and UTAUT elements on attitude toward BT, as well as the role of attitude toward BT as a mediator between TAM and UTAUT elements and intention to use BT.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a quantitative research method, and a structured questionnaire was used to gather primary data. The final sample, drawn using a convenience sampling that consisted of 273 managers from the Jordanian manufacturing sector. Structural equation modeling statistical method was conducted using the Smart PLS program to test hypotheses in the proposed study framework.

Findings

The study has provided intriguing results. It found that two UTAUT elements, namely performance expectancy and social influence and one TAM element, namely perceived usefulness, have a significant impact on the attitude toward BT. Besides that, the study found that attitude toward BT significantly mediated the relationship between UTAUT-TAM elements and intention to use BT. The findings revealed that three elements namely performance expectancy, social influence and perceived usefulness have statistical significance on intention to use BT through the mediation of attitude. Finally, there is a direct significant positive relationship between the attitude toward BT and intention to use it.

Research limitations/implications

The study helps decision-makers, South Carolina practitioners and academics recognize the fundamental factors that increase manufacturing firms’ intentions to use blockchain in their SCs. This gives decision-makers a better understanding of why users accept or reject BT, as well as how to improve user acceptability through technological design. Future studies should seek for a bigger sample size and use random sampling techniques. Furthermore, the study should be replicated in other industries or developing countries to validate the findings.

Originality/value

There is a scarcity of studies identifying the factors that increase blockchain adoption intention in SCM and developing countries. This study differs in that it examines BT intention to use in the context of SC using an integrated technology adoption framework that uses two well-known models, UTAUT and TAM, whereas other studies typically use only one model/theory. Moreover, given the importance of attitude in behavior, this study also investigated the effect of TAM-UTAUT elements on attitude toward BT, as well as the role of attitude toward BT as a mediator between TAM and UTAUT elements and intention to use BT.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a model that examines the relationships among the five dimensions of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) toward the overall behavioral intentions (BIs); to use cashless payment systems in Thailand, which are practically based on the basic models and theories of consumer behavior such as the theory of reasoned action (TRA), theory of planned behavior (TPB) and technology acceptance model (TAM); and to explain the indirect effects between UTAUT and BIs to use cashless payment systems mediating by perceived risk and trust.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 708 respondents, who have had an experience with a cashless payment system in Thailand, were selected using a stage sampling method. The data obtained from the participants were analyzed using a structural equation modelling approach.

Findings

The results of this paper reveal that UTAUT model, perceived risk and trust have all significant influences on BIs to use a cashless payment system. This suggests that consumers in Thailand adopt to specific financial technological innovation if they perceive that the risk is low and they can trust the system, especially if it is associated with a reliable online banking network.

Originality/value

The basic understanding of the UTAUT model that influences BIs to use cashless payment systems has been the focus of this current paper. This paper empirically examined the overall direct and indirect influences of UTAUT model and perceived risk, trust and BI to use. This current paper also expands the UTAUT theory by exploring several dimensions (i.e. performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influence). Research findings reveal that effort expectancy can reduce perceived risk and increase trust in Thailand's cashless payment systems. This can generate more customer interest and engagement, as well as provide insights into customers' intentions in using a cashless payment system.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of computer-assisted audit techniques and tools (CAATTs) is a part of many professionally recommended audit procedures. This paper aims to argue that obtaining a better understanding of the factors underlying successful CAATTs adoptions would be helpful to aid wider development of these technologies in internal audit functions.

Design/methodology/approach

To help develop the understanding of the factors that lead to successful adoption of GAS, this paper uses current theories that are seeking to better explain the various elements that constitute IT adoption processes. In particular, it makes use the “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology” (UTAUT). UTAUT is used to structure the analysis of ten semi-structured, qualitative, interviews of key decision-makers in adoptions of CAATTS in internal audit functions in exploring the key factors that drove the successful adoption of these IT technologies. The most widely used CAATTs tools available to internal auditors is currently GAS. This study specifically focuses on GAS tools.

Findings

This paper explores the successful adoption of GAS in ten cases to draw out the general factors that appear to be essential elements that lead to successful adoptions. From this basis, the paper proposes an initial model, built on existing theories of IT adoption more generally, as a theoretical basis for GAS adoption by decision-makers in an internal audit setting to better understand what may be essential factors to their adoption decisions to be likewise successful. Results suggest that two constructs from UTAUT (performance expectancy and facilitating conditions) appear to be particularly important factors influencing successful adoptions of GAS in this domain. However, the UTAUT constructs of social influence and effort expectancy are not found by this study to be as important in this specific IT adoption domain. UTAUT also proposes four moderating factors that influence the constructs. This paper explores two of these moderators – experience and voluntariness – and shows that both are keys to the constructs application to this domain.

Originality/value

The paper examines the motivation for CAATTs adoption by internal auditors using the UTAUT framework commonly used in information system research but not so to date in this domain where there is professional guidance suggesting wider use of technology should be made compared to actual usage.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to extend the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model to understand the factors affecting the usage behavior of Blockchain from accountants' and auditors’ perspectives and its impact on their performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research approach employing a web-based questionnaire was applied, and the empirical data were gathered from 329 potential and current users of Blockchain in the accounting and auditing profession in Jordan. The analytical model was based on structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS 25.0.

Findings

The experimental findings of the structural path confirmed that performance expectancy (PE), social influence (SI), Blockchain transparency (BT) and Blockchain efficiency (BE) were significantly affecting individuals’ behavioral intention (BI) toward the use of Blockchain-based systems and helped to explain (0.67) of its variance. Also, BE has a positive significant impact on PE. Whereas, in contrast to what is anticipated, the influence of effort expectancy (EE) on BI was not supported. Additionally, users’ intentions were found to affect the actual usage (AU) behavior and helped to explain (0.69) of its variance. The outcome variables proposed in this study: knowledge acquisition (KACQ) and user satisfaction (USAT) were significantly influenced by the AU of Blockchain technology.

Practical implications

This study outlines practical implications for government, policymakers, business leaders and Blockchain service providers aiming to exploit the advantages of Blockchain technology (BCT) in the accounting and auditing context.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this article is one of the few studies that offer an evidence-based perspective to the discussions on the effect of disruptive and automated information and communication technologies (ICTs), on the accounting and auditing profession. It applies an innovative approach to analysis through the integration of UTAUT, contextual factors: BT and BE, besides two outcome factors: KACQ and USAT within its theoretical model. This study extends and complements the academic literature on information technology/information systems acceptance and use by providing novel insights into accountants' and auditors’ views.

Abstract

Purpose

The Metaverse is an immersive virtual world where individuals interact with each other using an avatar. The Metaverse is promised to offer several potentials for different sectors. While the Metaverse promotes innovative interaction between individuals (e.g. learners), there is a scarcity of knowledge on what influences its acceptance and use in higher educational institutions (HEIs), particularly in developing countries. Thus, this paper aims to identify the factors that affect the users' intentions toward Metaverse technology for educational purposes in the HEIs in Jordan.

Design/methodology/approach

A study model was created by incorporating variables from the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) (performance expectancy, PE; effort expectancy, EE; social influence, SI; and facilitating conditions, FC) and information system success (ISS) model (user satisfaction, SAT; system quality, SQ; service quality, SVQ and information quality, IQ) with perceived curiosity (PC) and hedonic gratification (HG) constructs. Both PC and HG were added as context-related factors that could contribute to improving the applicability of UTAUT and ISS to a wide range of technology use contexts. Data were gathered from 441 Jordanian university students using an online questionnaire.

Findings

The analysis of the structural model revealed that users' behavioural intentions toward using Metaverse were significantly affected by user satisfaction (SAT), performance expectancy (PE), facilitating conditions (FC) and hedonic gratification (HG). Also, information quality (IQ) and services quality (SVQ) were revealed to have a significant influence on user satisfaction. Likewise, the results illustrated a significant impact of systems quality (SQ), information quality (IQ) and service quality (SVQ) on PE. Lastly, a significant effect of PC on the EE factor was found.

Practical implications

This study will shed light on a number of practical implications for developers, designers, service providers and decision-makers supporting the acceptance and adoption of the Metaverse technology in the educational context. Also, it will contribute to developing the right strategies, and Metaverse content which will draw the attention of learners.

Originality/value

As per the surveyed literature and the researcher's prior knowledge, this is one of the first studies that integrate the UTAUT model, ISS model and two contextual factors (PC and HG) besides testing the proposed model in a developing country (Jordan). This paper is one of the few in which the individuals' acceptance behaviour of Metaverse technology was examined in the HEIs context.

Abstract

Purpose

There were numerous models that were developed with the explicit purpose of predicting the information system (IS) adoption behaviour. However, these models are criticized for the fact that they do not accurately capture the effect of external factors (unforeseen events) on individual intention, which may inhibit the act of adopting and using IS. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these external factors among entrepreneur(s) and measure how the individual's propensity to use affects the adoption and use of IS innovation. This paper will also attempt to investigate the key determinants of the adoption of IT innovation among entrepreneurs in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the research model, a questionnaire was developed, and data collected from entrepreneurs based in Klang Valley Malaysia. In all, 326 responses were collected, and the research model was applied using the structural equation modelling technique.

Findings

The performance expectancy and the propensity to act are salient determinants of behavioural intention to adopt and use IS innovation. An individual's pervasive decision to use IS innovations are strong factor that influences individual intention and behaviour prediction. Furthermore, precipitating events were determined to be the underlying factor that influences the behavioural intention for an adopter to actually adopt IS innovation(s). The finding(s) demonstrates that the probability of an intention actually translating into actual usage is higher if the precipitating events occur in their respective businesses.

Research limitations/implications

It is important to evaluate this study's results and contributions in light of its limitations. This is an initial test for this model, and it should be subjected to further testing and refinement, particularly with regards to the precipitating events construct. One should be aware that an entrepreneur is exposed to various events and challenges that could involve their personal, family, career, and business life. Certain events related to these factors would impact the entrepreneurs differently, which might require different coping mechanisms. Future research should focus on the precipitating events related to their personal, family, career and business life, and which of these precipitating events are most prominently affecting their decision to actively use IS innovation.

Practical implications

End-users, particularly, as this study reveals, do prefer new IS innovation, but they may not use it as often. Thus, developers and or inventors of IS innovation need to understand factors that can influence users’ decision to adopt and use IS innovation. As for entrepreneurs, understanding factors that influence them to use IS innovation would enhance their sense on the relative importance of using the system. Furthermore, this study provides evidence concerning the role of precipitating events, which encourages or inhibits entrepreneurs towards IS related innovation adoption behaviour. This study makes clear that government policy and environmental factors, as well as work situation significantly influences an entrepreneur's intention in using IS innovation.

Originality/value

This study extends the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Some aspects of the Entrepreneurial Potential Model are incorporated into UTAUT, with the express purposes of capturing external variables. Additionally, the role of the volitional aspect of an entrepreneur's intention towards IS innovation are also taken into due consideration. This model assist the researchers in measuring the effect of pervasive decision and external factors on technology acceptance, and will provide essential information that explains the promotion of IS innovation adoption, usage and hindrance.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology acceptance, especially internet banking adoption, has become a vital issue in the business world today. The potential of this technology is enormous. The purpose of this study is to ascertain determinants of internet banking adoption using unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and electronic service (e-service) quality, which accounts for changes in user’s intention to adopt internet banking.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected data from customers of commercial banks using structured questionnaires. The data were collected in four weeks in the beginning of September 2017. A two-stage approach of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used for data analysis.

Findings

The results reveal that integrated UTAUT model had significant influence on user intention to adopt internet banking. Findings of the SEM indicated that approximately 80 per cent of the variance in user intention to adopt internet banking was accounted by predictors. The study schematized that assurance is the most influential factor among all other technology and service quality factors. Additionally, performance expectancy and effort expectancy were found to be positive and significant mediator variables among website design, customer service and customer’s intention to adopt internet banking.

Practical implications

It is recommended that both website designers and managers should focus on technology and service quality factors to boost the confidence of internet banking users. Importance performance matrix analysis suggested that managers should provide assurance to internet banking users, so that they could maintain a long-term relationship with internet banking services. The study calls researchers to test the integrated UTAUT model in other electronic commerce (e-commerce) domains such as online booking or online shopping websites.

Originality/value

To the best of author’s knowledge, this study is the first that extend the UTAUT model with four e-service quality dimensions, namely, website design, customer service, assurance and reliability to investigate user’s intention to adopt internet banking in developing country context of Pakistan. More importantly, the mediating role of performance expectancy and effort expectancy is examined first time within integrated UTAUT model. Furthermore, the integration of UTAUT model contributes to the advancement of internet banking acceptance and offers useful insights to researchers and policy-makers on how to enhance internet banking acceptance among customers of commercial banks.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to integrate the unified theory of acceptance and usage of technology (UTAUT) with task technology fit to explain users' behavioral intention of using library mobile applications in university libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

By integrating the unified theory of acceptance and usage of technology (UTAUT) and the moderator of task-technology fit, this research proposes a library mobile applications usage intention model. The study data come from a convenience sample of 363 undergraduate and graduate students. A structural equation modelling (SEM) technique was conducted to identify causal relationships.

Findings

Results showed that the UTAUT model fits the data well. The empirical data reveal that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions determine users' behavioral intention of using library mobile applications. As a determinant in the UTAUT model, the moderating effect of task-technology fit is also significant. Moreover, individuals with different levels of task-technology fit will strengthen or weaken the relationships of determinants in the intention to use library mobile applications in university libraries.

Research limitations/implications

This study addresses self-reported behavioral intentions as part of the survey; as a result, the data may have introduced inaccuracies. The implications of the proposed library mobile applications success model are discussed.

Practical implications

University librarians should reinforce the efficiency of library mobile applications to influence users' willingness to use such applications.

Originality/value

This study combines both the constructs of the UTAUT model and task-technology fit to consider intentions to use library mobile applications in university libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the factors that influence bank customers’ acceptance towards FinTech using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was carried out, and a judgemental sampling method was used. Moreover, over 200 responses were gathered from individuals that were bank account holders. Besides, the literature on the factors that influence an individual acceptance towards FinTech using the UTAUT model was also reviewed as an effort to contribute towards the factors that are significant in predicting the acceptance of FinTech services.

Findings

The results of the study revealed that performance expectancy and effort expectancy are the main factors in determining the acceptance of FinTech services. Moreover, consumer innovativeness plays an important role in the acceptance of FinTech by bank users. In contrast, social influence and facilitating conditions were not the determinants of FinTech acceptance in Pakistan.

Research limitations/implications

This study not only contributed to the theoretical extensions but also to practical implications, which would benefit the community of FinTech service providers in Pakistan.

Practical implications

The limitations of this study were two but are not limited to, firstly, the respondents which were taken among bank customers in Pakistan, confining its contribution to the narrowed perspective of Pakistan. Besides, this study also considers its contributions towards the use of the UTAUT in which the factors examined were specific, which may elucidate that the generalization of the findings only includes FinTech, where the UTAUT comes into play. This study is an eye-opener for the merging perspective of both the UTAUT and FinTech.

Originality/value

UTAUT is extended in the context of FinTech. Consumer innovativeness is incorporated in the context of the UTAUT model. Consumer innovativeness is yet to be tested and for that this study is a useful reference for academicians, policymakers and future researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence the willingness of Saudi Arabian students from four universities in Saudi Arabia, to adopt learning management systems (LMSs). This will be accomplished by using two popular technology acceptance models unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 445 undergraduates from four Saudi educational institutions participate in filling out the study questionnaire. To investigate the correlations between the variables, the study used structural equation modeling for data analysis.

Findings

The results of the study show that effort expectancy (EE), subjective norm (SN), attitude toward behavior (ATB) and perceived behavioral control (PBC) are found to be substantially connected with their intentions to use (ITU) LMSs. The findings also show that there is a strong relationship between students’ intentions and their actual use of LMSs.

Research limitations/implications

Like many studies, this research has some limitations. The primary limitation is that the findings of the study cannot be extrapolated to other settings since the report’s analysis and investigation were limited to four Saudi universities. Therefore, to generalize the study’s findings, similar research needs to be conducted in other Gulf and similar cultural universities.

Practical implications

The integrated model identifies key factors that influence the intent of Saudi Arabian students to use LMS, including EEs, social influence, ATB and PBC. This model can help develop solutions for the obstacles that prevent students from using LMS. The findings can be used to provide assistance to increase the likelihood of LMS acceptance as part of the educational experience. The model may also inspire further research on this topic in the Gulf nations, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

Originality/value

As none of the relevant studies conducted previously in Saudi Arabia has integrated the two models to study the students’ ITU LMSs, this study combines two major theories, TPB and UTAUT, in the context of Saudi Arabia, contributing to the field of technology use in education by expanding empirical research and providing a thorough understanding of the challenges associated with the use of LMS in Saudi universities. This study should be viewed as filling a crucial gap in the field. Moreover, this integrated model, using more than one theoretical perspective, brings a thorough comprehension of the barriers that hinder students’ adoption of LMSs in the academic context in Saudi Arabia and thus assists in making effective decisions and reaching viable solutions.
