Abstract

Purpose

Despite of the numerous characteristics of the multirotor unmanned aircraft systems (UASs), they have been termed as less energy-efficient compared to fixed-wing and helicopter counterparts. The purpose of this paper is to explore a more efficient multirotor configuration and to provide the robust and stable control system for it.

Design/methodology/approach

A heterogeneous multirotor configuration is explored in this paper, which employs a large rotor at the centre to provide majority of lift and three small tilted booms rotors to provide the control. Design provides the combined characteristics of both quadcopters and helicopters in a single UAS configuration, providing endurance of helicopters keeping the manoeuvrability, simplicity and control of quadcopters. In this paper, rotational as well as translational dynamics of the multirotor are explored. Cascade control system is designed to provide an effective solution to control the attitude, altitude and position of the rotorcraft.

Findings

One of the challenging tasks towards successful flight of such a configuration is to design a stable and robust control system as it is an underactuated system possessing complex non-linearities and coupled dynamics. Cascaded proportional integral (PI) control approach has provided an efficient solution with stable control performance. A novel motor control loop is implemented to ensure enhanced disturbance rejection, which is also validated through Dryden turbulence model and 1-cosine gust model.

Originality/value

Robustness and stability of the proposed control structure for such a dynamically complex UAS configuration is demonstrated with stable attitude and position performance, reference tracking and enhanced disturbance rejection.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply the proportional integral (PI) control algorithm in discrete manufacturing enterprises to maintain lower and steadier work in progress so as to improve on‐time delivery.

Design/methodology/approach

A sensitivity constrained optimization model is designed on the frequency domain, whose optimum algebraic solutions are then obtained easily. Two controllers, a backlog controller and an input‐rate controller, are devised, which correspond to the integral control and the proportional control of PI controllers, respectively. Interacting with each other, these controllers have made the engineering implementation of PI controllers a reality.

Findings

Simulation is carried out in certain motorcycle production lines. Results confirm that PI controllers also possess good control effects in the discrete manufacturing industry, as well as in the process industry.

Research limitations/implications

A continued departure from the nominal may happen repeatedly if the root causes of changing are not detected and identified. Moreover, PI controllers can mask process defects, failures, and drifts, and this may lead to eventual catastrophic failures. So, statistical process control should be utilized in PI controlled processes to detect significant changes for long‐term process improvement.

Practical implications

PI controllers possess potential in discrete enterprises.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this work is to develop a model that can be used for simulation of different parameters including price, subjected to different control strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The entire supply chain can be modelled by combining the transfer function into a closed loop system. The transfer function of each entity in the supply chain can be obtained by using the control theory tools. The model can be approximated as a linear discrete system with various operating constants, like lead time, price, order policy and supply.

Findings

The continuous replenishment ordering policy for a distribution node in a supply chain was analyzed using the z-transform. Characteristic equations of the closed loop transfer function are obtained. The bullwhip (BW) effect is analyzed. Study proves that the BW effect is in evitable if the standard heuristic ordering policy is employed with demand forecasting; also the paper analysed price supply trade-off for dynamic demand and supply. Simulation results show that BW is less in PI and simple p-only with cascade control. Robust control and PD, PID control results are not shown in this literature, and it is subject to further research.

Originality/value

Research is original, it can be applicable in today's dynamic world, due to globalization, it is necessary to have a automated machine that can handle most of supply chain decision.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to mainly discuss how to suppress the disturbances accurately and effectively in the wind energy conversion system (WECS) of the direct drive surface mount permanent magnet synchronous generator (SPMSG).

Design/methodology/approach

The disturbances in wind energy conversion system have seriously negative influence on the maximum power tracking performance. Therefore, a model predictive control (MPC) method of model compensation active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) strategy in parallel connection is designed, which optimizes the speed tracking performance compared with the existing control strategy of MPC and ADRC in series connection. Based on the traditional ADRC, a multi parameter model compensation ADRC strategy is added to better estimate the disturbances. At the same time, a torque feedback strategy is added to compensate the disturbances caused by load torque and further optimize the speed loop tracking performance.

Findings

The simulation results show that the designed control method has advantages than the traditional control method in compensating the disturbances and tracking the maximum power more effectively.

Originality/value

The simulation results show that the designed control method is superior to the traditional proportional control method, which can better compensate the internal and external disturbances and track the maximum power more effectively.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a cascaded pseudo derivative feedback (PDF) plus pseudo derivative feedback plus pseudo derivative feedforward (PDFF) controller for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) to improve the transient response of the system.

Design/methodology/approach

Proportional integral (PI) plus PI controller and the proposed PDF plus PDFF controller are designed, stability analysis is performed using the extended root locus method, and the effect of the damping coefficient is also extensively studied to validate the robustness of the proposed controller.

Findings

When compared to a cascaded PI plus PI controller, the proposed control approach has a much shorter settling time for the entire system and a 50% reduction in overshoot in stator current under extensive variations in speed with load disturbance.

Originality/value

The proposed controller is programmed into an FPGA Altera Cyclone II and applied to a 1.5 kW laboratory prototype PMSM drive. The effectiveness of the proposed methods has been demonstrated experimentally throughout a wide variable speed range, from 0 to 157 rad/s at different load conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper intent to design, develop, and fabricate a robust cascaded controller based on the dual loop concept i.e. Fuzzy Sliding Mode concept in the inner loop and traditional Proportional Integral controller in the outer loop to reduce the unknown dynamics and disturbances that occur in the DC-DC Converter.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed Fuzzy sliding mode approach combines the merits of both SMC and Fuzzy logic control. FSMC approach reduces the chattering phenomena that commonly occurs in the sliding mode control and speed up the response of the controller.

Findings

In most of the research work, the inner current loop of cascaded controller was designed by sliding mode control. In this paper FSMC is proposed and its efficacy is confirmed with SMC -PI. In most uncertainties, FSMC-PI produces null maximum peak overshoot and a very less settling time of 0.0005 sec.

Originality/value

The presence of Fuzzy SMC in the inner loop ensure satisfactory response against all uncertainties such as steady state, circuit parameter variations and sudden line and load disturbances.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a robust cascaded controller based on proportional-integral (PI) and continuous sliding mode control.

Design/methodology/approach

Cascaded control structure is an attractive control scheme for DC-DC power converters. It has a two-loop structure where the outer loop contains PI controller and the inner loop uses sliding mode control (SMC). This structure thus combines the merits of both the control schemes. However, there are some issues that have prohibited its adoption in industry, the discontinuous nature of SMC which leads to variable switching frequency operation and is hard to realize practically. This paper attempts to overcome this issue by changing the discontinuous functionality of SMC to continuous by utilizing the concept of equivalent control.

Findings

The robustness of the controller designed is verified by considering various cases, namely, ideal case with no uncertainties, sudden variation of input supply voltage, load resistance, reference voltage, circuit-parameters and for noise disturbance. The controller effectiveness is validated by simulating the DC-DC boost and Cuk converters in SimPowerSystems toolbox of MATLAB/Simulink. It is shown that the performance of the proposed controller is satisfactory, and both reference output voltage and inductor current are tracked with little or no sensitivity to disturbances.

Originality/value

The results for various scenarios are interesting and show that the controller works quite satisfactorily for all the simulated uncertainties.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to improve and adapt cascaded multilevel converters for electric vehicles (EVs) to have all the advantages of these converters and to eliminate its limitation in the use of EVs applications. Specifically, the purpose is to use only a single power source (battery pack, fuel cell, etc.) and to generate a higher power‐quality than regular multilevel converters.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based in a cascaded multilevel converter conformed by two 3‐level inverters connected in series. The voltage sources of the auxiliary inverter were replaced by floating capacitors which work as active filters, reducing the power sources to one. The floating capacitor voltages were controlled by a PI controller that adjusts the modulation index (m) to obtain a zero average power in the auxiliary inverters, and a predictive control selects the optimal redundant state to reduce the error and balance all the capacitor voltages. As the modulation index is determined by the PI controller, the output voltage magnitude must be controlled by a variable voltage source (e.g. buck‐boost chopper). Additionally, the converter works with new optimal voltage asymmetries to obtain higher power quality and capacitor control stability.

Findings

The proposed converter uses a topology that conventionally generates 9‐levels of voltage, but with the proposed asymmetry is as generate 11‐levels. Also, the auxiliary power sources were eliminated.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed solution has a limited dynamic response due to the variation rate of the capacitor voltage, which is limited by the load current and the capacitance. However, the dynamic response and control stability is satisfactory for EVs applications.

Originality/value

The paper presents a new control to manage the floating capacitor voltages and uses new voltage asymmetries in cascaded multilevel converters.

Abstract

Purpose

Cascaded DC-DC converters system is the main structure of distributed power system, and it has complex nonlinear phenomena during operation, which affect the power quality. Therefore, the dynamic behavior of the cascaded buck converter and boost converter system, as one of the typical cascaded DC-DC converters systems is analyzed.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the studied cascaded system of the buck converter with peak current control and the boost converter with PI current control is introduced and its discrete modeling is built. Then, the Jacobian matrix of the cascaded system is calculated to research the stability when the parameter change. Finally, simulation by PSIM and experiments are carried out to verify the theoretical analysis.

Findings

The coexistence of fast and slow time scale bifurcations with the changes of reference current and input voltage are studied in the cascaded system, and using simulation analysis to further study the sensitivity of the inductor current of the front-stage converter and back-stage converter to different parameters.

Originality/value

A discrete model of the cascaded buck converter and boost converter system is established, and its dynamic behavior is analyzed in detail for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

The motivation to perform research on feedback control system for unmanned aerial vehicles, a fact that each quadrocopter is unstable.

Design/methodology/approach

For this reason, it is necessary to design a control system which is capable of making unmanned aerial vehicle vertical take-off and landing (UAV VTOL) stable and controllable. For this purpose, it was decided to use a feedback control system with cascaded PID controller. The main reason for using it was that PID controllers are simple to implement and do not use much hardware resources. Moreover, cascaded control systems allow to control object response using more parameters than in a standard PID control. STM32 microcontrollers were used to make a real control system. The rapid prototyping using Embedded Coder Toolbox, FreeRTOS and STM32 CubeMX was conducted to design the algorithm of the feedback control system with cascaded PID controller for unmanned aerial vehicle vertical take-off and landings (UAV VTOLs).

Findings

During research, an algorithm of UAV VTOL control using the feedback control system with cascaded PID controller was designed. Tests were performed for the designed algorithm in the model simulation in Matlab/Simulink and in the real conditions.

Originality/value

It has been proved that an additional control loop must have a full PID controller. Moreover, a new library is presented for STM32 microcontrollers made using the Embedded Coder Toolbox just for the research. This library enabled to use rapid prototyping while developing the control algorithms.
