Abstract

Purpose

3D printing is gaining attention in the medical sector for the development of customized solutions for a wide range of applications such as temporary external implants. The materials used for the manufacturing process are critical, as they must provide biocompatibility and adequate mechanical properties. This study aims to evaluate and model the influence of the printing parameters on the mechanical properties of two biocompatible materials.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the mechanical properties of 3D-printed specimens of two biocompatible materials (ABS medical and PLActive) were evaluated. The influence of several printing parameters (infill density, raster angle and layer height) was studied and modelled on three response variables: ultimate tensile strength, deformation at the ultimate tensile strength and Young’s modulus. Therefore, statistical models were developed to predict the mechanical responses based on the selected printing parameters.

Findings

The used methodology allowed obtaining compact models that show good fit, particularly, for both the ultimate tensile strength and Young’s modulus. Regarding the deformation at ultimate tensile strength, this output was found to be influenced by more factors and interactions, resulting in a slightly less precise model. In addition, the influence of the printing parameters was discussed in the work.

Originality/value

The presented paper proposed the use of statistical models to select the printing parameters (infill density, raster angle and layer height) to optimize the mechanical response of external medical aids. The models will help users, researchers and firms to develop optimized solutions that can reduce material costs and printing time but guaranteeing the mechanical response of the parts.

Abstract

In part I uses an iterative point successive over‐relaxation (PSOR) finite difference scheme to solve the coupled unsteady Navier‐Stokes and energy equations for incompressible, viscous and laminar flows in their primitive variable form. Presents the details concerning the derivation of the solution scheme, as well as details on its computer implementation. For validation purposes, includes the results of the two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional benchmark problem of natural convection in a cavity with differentially heated vertical walls. Benchmark computations have been performed for a Prandtl number of 0.71, and different values of the Rayleigh number ranging between 103 and 106 depending on the problem. By comparison with other approaches in the literature, the scheme has been found to be accurate even for large Rayleigh numbers.

Abstract

This chapter deals with the Citizens’ Revolution in Ecuador facing US imperialism. It is divided into five parts. Firstly, the author gives some historical elements on the structure and dynamics of the Ecuadorian economy in the short medium and long term. Secondly, the author presents the project of transition to socialism of the Citizens’ Revolution as it occurred at the normative level and in public policies. The third part focuses especially on the economic dimension of this project and offers an overall critic of it. The fourth part provides a general explanation on the dynamics of the progressive cycle in Ecuador. Eventually the fifth part emphasizes the need to perform much more radical breaks to make a process of transition to socialism viable in this country.

Abstract

In part I of this study, a three‐dimensional finite difference iterative solver capable of handling the coupled Navier‐Stokes and energy equations for incompressible viscous flows was described and validated with two‐ and three‐dimensional benchmarks. Part II describes the results of the computational study of two distinct complex geometries: 1) two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional natural convection in cavity whose surface is cooled while two internal blocks are heated; 2) two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional natural convection in the region defined by two interconnected cavities of different sizes which are differentially heated. All computations have been performed for a Prandtl number of 1.0, and different values of the Rayleigh number ranging between 103 and 106 depending on the problem. In the first problem, three‐dimensional effects in the top region of the cavity trap fluid in vortices near the top of the heated blocks adversely affecting heat transfer in the region while enhancing it in the region between the two heated blocks. In the second problem, the sudden expansion of fluid as it leaves the top cavity and enters the bottom one generates three‐dimensional wakes in the bottom cavity that enhance the convective heat transfer across the system walls near them. These studies tend to suggest that three‐dimensional effects play a very important role in the enhancement of convective heat transfer in complex geometries, especially at higher Rayleigh numbers.
