Abstract

In this paper, we study partial identification of the distribution of treatment effects of a binary treatment for ideal randomized experiments, ideal randomized experiments with a known value of a dependence measure, and for data satisfying the selection-on-observables assumption, respectively. For ideal randomized experiments, (i) we propose nonparametric estimators of the sharp bounds on the distribution of treatment effects and construct asymptotically valid confidence sets for the distribution of treatment effects; (ii) we propose bias-corrected estimators of the sharp bounds on the distribution of treatment effects; and (iii) we investigate finite sample performances of the proposed confidence sets and the bias-corrected estimators via simulation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop metadata of conceptual elements based on the text structure of research articles on Korean studies, to propose a search algorithm that reflects the combination of semantically relevant data in accordance with the search intention of research paper and to examine the algorithm whether there is a difference in the intention-based search results.

Design/methodology/approach

This study constructed a metadata database of 5,007 research articles on Korean studies arranged by conceptual elements of text structure and developed F1(w)-score weighted to conceptual elements based on the F1-score and the number of data points from each element. This study evaluated the algorithm by comparing search results of the F1(w)-score algorithm with those of the Term Frequency- Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) algorithm and simple keyword search.

Findings

The authors find that the higher the F1(w)-score, the closer the semantic relevance of search intention. Furthermore, F1(w)-score generated search results were more closely related to the search intention than those of TF-IDF and simple keyword search.

Research limitations/implications

Even though the F1(w)-score was developed in this study to evaluate the search results of metadata database structured by conceptual elements of text structure of Korean studies, the algorithm can be used as a tool for searching the database which is a tuning process of weighting required.

Practical implications

A metadata database based on text structure and a search method based on weights of metadata elements – F1(w)-score – can be useful for interdisciplinary studies, especially for semantic search in regional studies.

Originality/value

This paper presents a methodology for supporting IR using F1(w)-score—a novel model for weighting metadata elements based on text structure. The F1(w)-score-based search results show the combination of semantically relevant data, which are otherwise difficult to search for using similarity of search words.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to explore the corporate brand‐web associated with the TOYOTA F1 Racing Team in order to exemplify existing theoretical discussions of the brand‐web concept and contribute to insights towards developing understanding of the structure of the corporate brand‐web and brand relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study analysis of the TOYOTA F1 Racing Team, focusing on brand relationships associated with different levels of sponsorship is presented. The case study analysis is based on desk research.

Findings

The corporate brand‐web of the TOYOTA F1 Racing Team is presented. This portfolio of corporate brands and their relationships can be regarded as a corporate brand meta‐architecture. The study also offers taxonomy of different types of sponsorship‐based brand relationships, and identifies and discusses two key aspects of the relationships between brands, title sponsorship, and network relationships between the corporate brands in the brand‐web.

Originality/value

This article contributes to understanding of the corporate brand‐web and brand relationships in the sponsorship context and demonstrates the complexity of multiple brand relationships, and the need for researchers and practitioners to understand and manage their corporate brand architecture.

Abstract

Continuous Sampling Plans (CSP) are used where processes are continuous and products are not grouped into lots. The principal design criterion for these plans is the Average Outgoing Quality Limit (AOQL), which is the worst outgoing quality over all possible values of the incoming quality level. These are generally applicable to in‐process and final inspections and have been found to be most effective when administered in such a way as to provide an incentive to clear up the faults promptly. In applying the traditional continuous sampling plans, it is necessary to revert to 100 per cent inspection when the quality deteriorates. Therefore, the inspection rate must be larger than production rate and the unit inspection cost must be low. The plan presented in this article relaxes the 100 per cent inspection restriction while reaching the same AOQL quality assurance as traditional CSP‐1. The Markov chain process and numerical analysis will be used to formulate the plan. Its results are then evaluated against CSP‐2.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the systematic influence of core product features, event operation quality, sport fan identification, and image of host city as a tourism destination on behavioral intentions of international spectator at a Formula One (F1) event held in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey form assessing the specified concepts was designed and employed to examine the structural relationships. The research participants were international spectators (n=512) attending the event. Data were randomly split into two halves, one for EFA (n=256) and the other for CFA and SEM (n=256).

Findings

Findings revealed that core product feature and sport fan identification factors were significantly (p<0.05) related to both of international spectators’ desire to stay at the event, attend the event in the future, and revisit the country; whereas, event operation quality was only found to be significantly influential of the re-patronage, and destination image was only significantly influential of the desire to stay. The findings highlight the importance and relevance of these concepts in attracting, serving, and retaining international visitors to the event.

Originality/value

Unlike other studies that are centered merely on game and event factors, this study expanded on a bigger ecological spectrum surrounding a F1 event and systematically evaluated the critical concepts and factors affecting international tourist to the event that can be considerable sources of economic growth. The findings provide empirical evidence for event and tourism management and marketing.

Using Shanghai F1 as an example, this research seeks to examine the impact of mega-events on host city image from the perspective of international students. Leisure facilities and service were the most positive image impact perceived by the respondents, followed by affective city images as well as opportunities and convenience. International students tended to disagree that F1 would result in any crime and security problems and were unsure about any negative impact on environment and daily life. Some of the image factors were significantly related to intention to work in the city or the willingness to recommend the city.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the Intellectual Capital perspective can be altered in order to include ethically questionable practices of knowledge acquisition.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper explores the relationship between formal and illicit forms of intellectual capital acquisition through a case study of the Formula 1 industry. The paper is based on secondary data from public sources.

Findings

Ethically questionable practices are a part of the knowledge economy. In the case study, the view on what was ethical and accepted was changed due to uncovered practices of espionage.

Practical implications

Firms in knowledge‐intensive industries often employ unrecognized informal channels for intellectual capital acquisition. Managers should consider the boundary between right and wrong in their particular industry, and whether they have the tools for dealing with ethically questionable practices.

Originality/value

The paper suggests a complementary interpretation of the Formula 1 industry not only as a best‐practice case of how community and trust knowledge spillovers facilitate innovation, but also how ethically questionable practices of intellectual capital acquisition exist as an accepted part of the process.

Abstract

The stiffening international competition facing the Swedish chemical industry has led to a transition from commodity chemicals to speciality chemicals. Emphasis on speciality chemicals places demands on the flexibility of production systems. Analyses the issues regarding flexible production in the chemical industry in terms of the means of achieving flexibility and factors affecting flexibility, based on a study designed as a case study of two production units in a Swedish chemical company. Demonstrates the multi‐dimensional nature of the problems surrounding flexibility, and that technical and social factors interact to achieve a state of flexibility. Controlled by skilled employees, new technology may be a powerful means of achieving flexibility. Shows that technological factors may be associated with heavy restrictions that can be only partly offset by the social system.

Abstract

Purpose

Health promotion and disease prevention by means of functional foods have become more popular among consumers due to the rising trend of non-communicable diseases. Driven by the increased demand, the authors aimed to investigate sensorial, nutritional and physicochemical properties of chicken nugget incorporated with unripe Cavendish banana and Flavourzyme® [Control (without banana and Flavourzyme®), F1 (banana only), F2 (Flavourzyme® only), F3 (banana and Flavourzyme®)].

Design/methodology/approach

Sensory evaluation was carried out by means of 9-point hedonic scale among consumer panels (n = 83) to evaluate control, F1, F2 and F3. These were then subjected to chemical (moisture, protein, fat, ash, carbohydrate, total dietary fibre, potassium and antioxidant contents) and physical (texture profile and water activity) analyses.

Findings

Sensory acceptance of control was significantly higher compared to other formulations. Fibre, antioxidant and potassium contents were significantly higher, although moisture, protein and fat contents were significantly lower in F1 and F3 compared to control. Remarkably, F1 and F3 were eligible to be declared as “source of dietary fibre”. Therefore, F1, F2 and F3 can serve as healthier alternatives with high antioxidant activity without compromising consumers' acceptance.

Originality/value

This innovative study generates unique findings pertaining to the nutritional values of novel functional chicken nugget and the formulation enables it to be declared as a source of dietary fibre. Results have contributed knowledge to existing literature as well as benefits food manufacturers in creating healthy functional food to better meet the needs and expectations of health-conscious consumers, healthcare providers, governmental organisations and consumer advocacy groups.
