Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present eight local elasto‐plastic beam element formulations incorporated into the corotational framework for two‐noded three‐dimensional beams. These formulations capture the warping torsional effects of open cross‐sections and are suitable for the analysis of the nonlinear buckling and post‐buckling of thin‐walled frames with generic cross‐sections. The paper highlights the similarities and discrepancies between the different local element formulations. The primary goal of this study is to compare all the local element formulations in terms of accuracy, efficiency and CPU‐running time.

Design/methodology/approach

The definition of the corotational framework for a two‐noded three‐dimensional beam element is presented, based upon the works of Battini .The definitions of the local element kinematics and displacements shape functions are developed based on both Timoshenko and Bernoulli assumptions, and considering low‐order as well as higher‐order terms in the second‐order approximation of the Green‐Lagrange strains. Element forces interpolations and generalized stress resultant vectors are then presented for both mixed‐based Timoshenko and Bernoulli formulations. Subsequently, the local internal force vector and tangent stiffness matrix are derived using the principle of virtual work for displacement‐based elements and the two‐field Hellinger‐Reissner assumed stress variational principle for mixed‐based formulations, respectively. A full comparison and assessment of the different local element models are performed by means of several numerical examples.

Findings

In this study, it is shown that the higher order elements are more accurate than the low‐order ones, and that the use of the higher order mixed‐based Bernoulli element seems to require the least number of FEs to accurately model the structural behavior, and therefore allows some reduction of the CPU time compared to the other converged solutions; where a larger number of elements are needed to efficiently discretize the structure.

Originality/value

The paper reports computation times for each model in order to assess their relative efficiency. The effect of the numbers of Gauss points along the element length and within the cross‐section are also investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to predict the types of thermally induced dynamics (TID) that can occur on deployable solar panels of a small form factor satellite, CubeSat which flies in low Earth orbit (LEO). The TID effect on the CubeSat body is examined.

Design/methodology/approach

A 3U CubeSat with four short-edge deployable solar panels is considered. Time historic temperature of the solar panels throughout the orbit is obtained using a thermal analysis software. The results are used in numerical simulation to find the structural response of the solar panel. Subsequently, the effect of solar panel motion on pointing the direction of the satellite is examined using inertia relief method.

Findings

The thermal snap motion could occur during eclipse transitions due to rapid temperature changes in solar panels’ cross-sections. In the case of asymmetric solar panel configuration, noticeable displacement in the pointing direction can be observed during the eclipse transitions.

Research limitations/implications

This work only examines an LEO mission where the solar cells of the solar panels point to the Sun throughout the daylight period and point to the Earth while in shadow. Simplification is made to the CubeSat structure and some parameters in the space environment.

Practical implications

The results from this work reveal several practical applications worthy of simplifying the study of TID on satellite appendages.

Originality/value

This work presents a computational method that fully uses finite element software to analyze TID phenomenon that can occur in LEO on a CubeSat which has commonly used deployable solar panels structure.

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the buckling and the vibration of the beam induced by atom/molecule adsorption using the nonlocal Euler‐Bernoulli beam model with initial axial stress.

Design/methodology/approach

The nonlocal parameter associated with adsorbed mass and bending rigidity variations of the beam induced by adsorbates are taken into account, and the buckling and dynamic behaviors are obtained via the Hamilton's principle, in which the potential energy between adsorbates and surfaces of the beam, the bending energy, the external work and the kinetic energy are summed as the Lagrangian function.

Findings

The results show that, for both buckling and resonant frequency, the nonlocal effect should be considered when the beam scales down to several hundreds of nanometres, especially for higher mode numbers.

Originality/value

The present paper gives the exact expressions for the buckling and resonant frequency of a simple‐supported nonlocal beam with initial axial stress. Different from previous works, the mass increasing and bending rigidity of the beam are found size‐dependent (nonlocal effect), resulting in possible different static and dynamic behaviors of the beam when atom/molecular adsorption occurs. The exact expressions obtained for the buckling and resonant frequency may be helpful to the design and application of micro‐ and nanobeam‐based sensors/resonators.

Abstract

As far as steel‐rod structures are concerned the yield‐hinge theory is a very efficient approach of the ultimate‐load theory. Unfortunately, most of the published strategies suffer from considerable deficiencies which depend on two main reasons: first, the yield condition is not approximated very well, and, second, a flow rule is not incorporated at all. This may significantly affect the calculated load‐carrying behaviour and as a consequence the elasto‐plastic failure prediction. In the present paper a consistent formulation of a refined numerical method based on the yield‐hinge theory is consistently developed from the theory of plasticity. The derivation is carried out in the framework of a geometrically nonlinear Timoshenko beam theory discretized for the displacement based finite element method. The plastic deformations can be interpreted as three‐dimensional eccentric yield‐hinges (generalized yield‐hinges). The presented numerical xamples show the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to perform dynamic response analysis of damaged rigid-frame bridges under multiple moving loads using analytical based transfer matrix method (TMM). The effects of crack depth, moving load velocity and damping on the dynamic response of the model are discussed. The dynamic amplifications are investigated for various damage scenarios in addition to displacement time-histories.

Design/methodology/approach

Timoshenko beam theory (TBT) and Rayleigh-Love bar theory (RLBT) are used for bending and axial vibrations, respectively. The cracks are modeled using rotational and extensional springs. The structure is simplified into an equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) system using exact mode shapes to perform forced vibration analysis according to moving load convoy.

Findings

The results are compared to experimental data from literature for different damaged beam under moving load scenarios where a good agreement is observed. The proposed approach is also verified using the results from previous studies for free vibration analysis of cracked frames as well as dynamic response of cracked beams subjected to moving load. The importance of using TBT and RLBT instead of Euler–Bernoulli beam theory (EBT) and classical bar theory (CBT) is revealed. The results show that peak dynamic response at mid-span of the beam is more sensitive to crack length when compared to moving load velocity and damping properties.

Originality/value

The combination of TMM and modal superposition is presented for dynamic response analysis of damaged rigid-frame bridges subjected to moving convoy loading. The effectiveness of transfer matrix formulations for the free vibration analysis of this model shows that proposed approach may be extended to free and forced vibration analysis of more complicated structures such as rigid-frame bridges supported by piles and having multiple cracks.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to study the dynamic vibrations of embedded double‐walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) subjected to a moving harmonic load with simply supported boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The model of DWCNTs is considered as an Euler‐Bernoulli beam with waviness along the length, which is more accurate than the straight beam in previous works. Based on the nonlocal beam theory, the governing equations of motion are derived by using the Hamilton's principle, and then the separation of variables is carried out by the Galerkin approach, leading to two second‐order ordinary differential equations (ODEs).

Findings

The influences of the nonlocal parameter, the amplitude of the waviness, the surrounding elastic medium, the material length scale, load velocity and van der Waals force on the nonlinear vibration of DWCNTs are important.

Originality/value

The dynamic responses of DWCNTs are obtained by using the precise integrator method to ordinary differential equations.

1. Introduction THE effect of torque is usually neglected in the Bernoulli‐Euler treatment of the flexure of thin rods. In practical cases the torque will rarely have any appreciable influence on static stability but from the dynamical aspect it may be the precursor of exponential instability in the absence of adequate damping forces. This phenomenon was suggested to me by Mr A. C. Hutchinson of Aliens, Bedford. Owing to torque there are cross deflexion coefficients which in particular cases are equal and opposite; and it is this negative reciprocity that gives rise to dynamic instability as we shall see. In the case, say, of a load on an overhung shaft it would appear that this instability is manifest at all speeds becoming more violent with the relative increase of torque. In practice it has frequently been found to be difficult if not impossible safely to run through particular ‘whirling’ speeds. In this connexion the problem of the stability of rotating shafts has reached a fresh peak of importance in consequence of the rapid development of the gas turbine as the prime mover in aircraft. The fundamental principles underlying the treatment of whirling phenomena are now well established and there is ample practical experience in support of the physical notion of shaft revolution propounded by Jeffcott in the Phil. Mag. for March 1919. Thus if a shaft is perfectly straight, completely balanced, and runs in bearings which are truly aligned; then, provided such masses as may be carried by the shaft have no appreciable moments of inertia, the normal ‘static’ flexural vibrations of the shaft will be independent of any imposed rotation, that is the path of any point on the neutral axis of the shaft will be uninfluenced by the rotation of the shaft section of which it is the centre. If the shaft is initially deflected by its weight, then the static vibrations will occur about the position of rest of the shaft and the imposed rotation will only apply to the cross‐sections of the shaft about their centres. If, however, the shaft is initially bent then each element may be considered as being ‘out of balance’ by the amount it is off the position it would occupy if the shaft were true and at rest. If we apply power to a bent shaft such as to maintain it in rotation with constant angular velocity then each element of shaft is regarded as being compelled to rotate with this constant angular velocity about the point on the effective elastic axis of the shaft, that is the axis of the deflected but corresponding unbent shaft. The unbalance will thus give rise to a forced vibration which will compel each element of the shaft to describe a circular path about its appropriate centre on the effective elastic axis; and this forced circular vibration will be independent of the static vibrations which are unforced and in consequence described as ‘free’. The radius of the path of any element in the forced circular vibration will depend inter alia on the speed of the imposed rotation, and the strain energy of the shaft so bent by flexure will be drawn or absorbed from the power which drives the shaft.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to combine Eringen’s micromorphic and nonlocal theories and thus develop a comprehensive size-dependent beam model capable of capturing the effects of micro-rotational/stretch/shear degrees of freedom of material particles and nonlocality simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

To consider nonlocal influences, both integral (original) and differential versions of Eringen’s nonlocal theory are used. Accordingly, integral nonlocal-micromorphic and differential nonlocal-micromorphic beam models are formulated using matrix-vector relations, which are suitable for implementing in numerical approaches. A finite element (FE) formulation is also provided to solve the obtained equilibrium equations in the variational form. Timoshenko micro-/nano-beams with different boundary conditions are selected as the problem under study whose static bending is addressed.

Findings

It was shown that the paradox related to the clamped-free beam is resolved by the present integral nonlocal-micromorphic model. It was also indicated that the nonlocal effect captured by the integral model is more pronounced than that by its differential counterpart. Moreover, it was revealed that by the present approach, the softening and hardening effects, respectively, originated from the nonlocal and micromorphic theories can be considered simultaneously.

Originality/value

Developing a hybrid size-dependent Timoshenko beam model including micromorphic and nonlocal effects. Considering the nonlocal effect based on both Eringen’s integral and differential models proposing an FE approach to solve the bending problem, and resolving the paradox related to nanocantilever.

Abstract

First, a synopsis of the major changes of natural science, mathematics and philosophy within the 17th century shall highlight the birth of the new age of science and technology. Based on Fermat's principle of the shortest light‐way and Galilei's first attempt of an approximative solution of the so‐called Brachistochrone problem using a quarter of the circle, Johann Bernoulli published a competition for this problem in 1696, and six solutions were submitted by the most famous scientists of the time and published in 1697, even though the variational calculus was only published in 1744 by Euler for the first time. Especially the analytical solution of Jakob Bernoulli contains already the main idea of Euler's variational calculus, i.e. to vary only one function value at a time using a finite difference method and proceeding to the infinitesimal limit. Also Leibniz' geometric solution is very remarkable, realizing a direct discrete variational method geometrically which was invented numerically much later in the 19th century by Ritz and Galerkin and generalized to the finite element method by introducing test and trial functions in finite subspaces. A new finite element solution of the non‐linear Brachistochrone problem concludes the paper. It is important to recognize that besides the roots of variational calculus also the first formulations of conservation laws in mechanics and their applications originated in the 17th century.
