Abstract

This chapter explores the issues in estimating the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the tourism industry and related activities in Australia. A production-based approach is employed and its rationale is explained. The scope of tourism consists of the economic activities of tourism-characteristic and tourism-connected sectors as defined in the Australian Tourism Satellite Account (TSA). The GHG emissions have been estimated for 2003–04, the latest year for which detailed industry GHG emissions data are available in a form suitable for this type of estimate. Tourism's GHG emissions are compared with other industries in the Australian economy. The policy implications of the results are discussed. It should be possible to adopt a broadly similar method for any destination with a TSA, enabling tourism stakeholders to play an informed role in assessing appropriate climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies for their destination.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an extremely destructive impact on the tourism and hospitality industry. However, there is a gap in the literature on measuring the economic impact of the pandemic on employees of urban tourism industries by class. Accordingly, this paper aims to investigate the perceived economic impact of the COVID-19 by workers of urban tourism-related services in Tehran.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on stratified sampling, a Web-based survey was carried out among 383 employees of tourism industries. To measuring the perceived impact and evaluate statistically significant differences, one samples t-test, one-way ANOVA and post hoc test were used.

Findings

The study findings revealed that employees of tourism-related services perceived that COVID-19 outbreak has a huge negative impact on the tourism industries in terms of earnings reduction. However, the perceived impact on job losses and reduction of hours of work was non-monotonic.

Originality/value

Identifying the negative effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on city tourism by industries and their subclasses can contribute to more effective interventions to support and recover the tourism industries. In other words, it is essential to prioritize support for different class of services, to fair allocation of bailout monies and to improve their resilience against crises and shocks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this viewpoint is to discuss and provide solutions for the current staffing crisis facing tourism-related industries. Considering that staff shortages are prominent in most industries this article suggests organizational changes that are needed to address these problems

Design/methodology/approach

This viewpoint unpacks the reason behind the shortage in staff and suggests potential solutions, based on organizational development

Findings

The strategies offered here as potential solutions for human resources center on changing the image of the roles that are suffering shortages. This includes developing organizational practices to provide changes in the areas of recruitment, reward, and work-life balance. These strategies are contextualized with the transformation of other jobs due to the global pandemic and the feminized nature of the tourism-related industries.

Originality/value

This viewpoint is particularly topical as it speaks to the current well-publicized crises in the staffing of airports and wider shortages of hospitality staff in developed nations. It is well positioned to spark discussion and future research on areas such as dignity at work in tourism-related industries, gendered work, and post-pandemic employment practices in services.

Abstract

Purpose

The natural environment is facing unprecedented times owing to rising temperatures from carbon emissions, which travel-related industries contribute significantly towards. The recent global COVID-19 outbreak should be a wake-up call for the industry, as vulnerabilities have been laid bare. The current challenges should be used as a motivation to change the meaning of travel to support the global warming crisis. This paper aims emphasis that, by means of new stories, new values, beliefs and ultimately travel behaviours can be rewritten.

Design/methodology/approach/

This study embraces a pragmatic approach to research. To ensure plausibility, credibility and relevance, the research carried out multi-disciplinary analysis of secondary data, information, knowledge and draws on current developing trends.

Findings

The travel community needs to take responsibility and start reducing its carbon footprint and as carbon neutrality is increasingly a global priority. Accordingly, this research considers potential future travel-related behaviours that could support more carbon-neutral travel. Significantly, it notes how the COVID-19 outbreak has offered insights into potential positive changes. To benefit from these changes, new stories for industry providers are necessary to encourage more carbon-neutral travel practices.

Originality/value

This paper offers timely and original discussions on the future of travel as a result of COVID-19 impacts. It draws on the power of storytelling as a means of achieving behavioural change in the travel community to support the challenge of climate change.

Purpose

In this chapter, we aim to analyse the role and benefits of a strategic approach to business partnerships and suggest suitable forms and strategies. Thus, the chapter’s purpose is to present the methods and models for business venturing applied in the tourism-related industries.

Methodology/approach

This chapter takes a perspective of the small business/prospective entrepreneur and analyses how the collaborative methods can contribute towards the business venture’s development and success. Literature review was conducted on issues and aspects of collaboration. Examples of best practices are used to illustrate the collaborative forms.

Findings

This chapter builds on extant bibliography to discuss the relevance of collaboration as well as its contribution within the tourism business environment. The study provides practical guidance and recommendations for the critical importance of adopting and implementing collaborative forms and strategies. Cooperation and collaborating could make a significant contribution in designing, managing and marketing services and experiences.

Research limitations/implications

This study is explorative in nature because the discussion is based on a literature review. It takes more entrepreneurial/practical than academic approach.

Practical implications

Entrepreneurs should carefully consider the various collaborative options at the initial stage of their business venture in order to increase the probabilities of success. By entering into a business venture, tourism providers can also provide appealing experience opportunities and extra customer value. However, some key issues need to be considered and resolved in order to realise the potential benefits.

Originality/value

This chapter offers prospective entrepreneurs practical guidance of and insights in collaborative forms and strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the total economic impact of tourism at the regional level in Central Finland. This paper aims to clarify the extent to which tourism contributes to regional output, employment, income and taxes in tourism-related sectors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a regional input–output analysis. The author calculates the effects of tourism on regional output, demand, wages, employment and national and regional taxes in Central Finland.

Findings

The author’s regional input–output analysis reveals that tourism has a substantial impact on production in Central Finland (including the direct and indirect effects of consumption by tourists in different sectors). Moreover, the effects of tourism expenditures on employment and residents’ incomes in tourism-related sectors in Central Finland are quite significant.

Research limitations/implications

Many limitations of this study stem from the assumptions of the input–output model. Other limitations relate to the analysis of the impacts of tourism on household taxes, savings, consumption and net income. Our study uses average figures, which may overstate the effect of tourist expenditures on taxes because tourism jobs are often low paying.

Practical implications

The study yields results that can be used to frame regional policy. The results may be useful for policymakers in planning for tourist attractions. Furthermore, local authorities may use the results to guide decisions regarding infrastructure investments or improvements to the operating environment of tourism industries.

Originality/value

Many studies analyse the economic impact of events at the regional level using input–output analysis. National-level tourism impact studies using the input–output technique have also been conducted. Studies focussed on the economic impact of tourism at the regional level typically examine the macroeconomic (income, output and employment) effects of tourism. Consequently, these studies have focussed on estimating output, employment and income multipliers (Mazumder et al., 2012). The author’s contribution is a regional input–output analysis of direct and indirect impacts of tourism expenditures on production, demand, wages, income and employment in the whole economy at the regional level (in Central Finland). The author also analyses the impacts of tourism on national and regional taxes. The results of this study could be used by planners and policymakers involved in regional planning and development.

The aim of this chapter is to discuss and highlight the importance of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs in tourism in order to engage the reader in the central topic of the handbook.

Methodology/approach

A literature review was conducted on conceptual issues and practical aspects of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. Case studies are included to illustrate the role and contribution of entrepreneurs in the tourism field.

Findings

This chapter highlights (1) practical definitions of the terms entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship; (2) main features of tourism entrepreneurs; and (3) the role of entrepreneurs in tourism activities and their contribution to the development of a tourism destination.

Research limitations/implications

This chapter is explorative in nature, because the discussion is mostly based on a literature review. Thus, more research-based knowledge and more empirical studies are needed in this field.

Practical implications

The chapter presents the main features and characteristics of individuals involved in entrepreneurship, as well as the need for developing the appropriate skills for successful business ventures.

Originality/value

This chapter deals with the question of why tourism entrepreneurship is so important in the contemporary context and in the business environment of tourism. The practical and entrepreneurial approach of the book is also discussed.

Literature review was conducted on main conceptual issues and practical aspects of entrepreneurship and creative tourism business. These issues have been illustrated by case studies from the business world.

Findings

This chapter outlines and highlights the main components/segments of the creative tourism, the profile of entrepreneurs in this industry, the main elements of creative tourism experiences, as well as the requirements and expectations of creative tourists.

Research limitations/implications

This chapter is explorative in nature based on a literature review and case studies. It takes an entrepreneurial perspective and approach.

Practical implications

An in-depth understanding the concept of creative tourism and its implementation is really useful in designing, managing and marketing the appropriate offering of experience opportunities in the creative tourism business. Therefore, to provide high-quality offering and memorable experiences in this field, prospective entrepreneurs should fully understand and apprehend the characteristics, the requirements and expectations of creative tourists.

Methodology/approach

A literature review was conducted on the relevant trends that can affect the management and marketing of tourism businesses. Micro case studies were also presented as practical examples of how tourism businesses have adapted to trends.

Findings

This chapter highlights the specific characteristics of the tourism industry, as well as the trends in the market/business environment. Tourism businesses need to remain aware of trends and find solutions to adapt their services and activities to take advantage of them.

Research limitations/implications

This chapter is explorative in nature because it has made used of extant literature.

Practical implications

Tourism entrepreneurs are encouraged to stay abreast of changes in the business environment. Some of the examples provided may only be applicable in the short run but other examples have long-term impact. Valuable solutions are provided for consideration.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the relationship between aggregate and individual dimensions of sustainability and financial and stock market performances of the firms in the travel and tourism industry (TTI) across different geographies.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample under study consists of 146 firms belonging to TTI that have consistently obtained environmental, social and governance (ESG) rating over the period 2011–2017 as a part of Thomson Reuters Asset 4 ESG database. An empirical multivariate panel data model is developed to analyse the impact of sustainability (ESG) on firm profitability and market value within three tourism-related industries (transportation, hotel and leisure).

Findings

The study extends the existing literature by investigating the impact of each of the vital dimensions of sustainability performance – ESG – and examines how each dimension would affect financial performance and market value among firms within three tourism-related industries (transportation, hotel and leisure). Among the three tourism industries, hotel industry is observed to have the highest ESG compliance, followed by the transportation industry. Based on the agency and stakeholder theory, the authors hypothesized all ESG components to have significant positive effect on the financial and stock market performance; however, the results reveal that each dimension has different impact on financial performance and market value of firms in the tourism industry.

Research limitations/implications

The study could help firms in the travel and tourism industries to understand which of the dimension of ESG activities is significantly important for their financial and stock market performance.

Originality/value

The unique contribution of this study is that it considers wider definition of the term “Sustainability” and examines the relationship between financial and stock market performances of the firms and each component of ESG. This is one of the few studies at the global level that provides much needed evidence in the area of sustainability performance by the travel and tourism firms.
