Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the sensitivity enhancement effect of the gold nanorod on fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. It proposes modeling the sensing effects of fiber SPR sensor decorated with metal nanoparticles. By using simulation and experiment, the sensitivity enhancement effect of the gold nanorod was studied and demonstrated.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper opted for an exploratory study using simulation approach of finite-difference time-domain. Specifically, the effect of ratios and aspect ratios of gold nanorod on sensing performance are investigated theoretically. Based on the mathematical models, the validation experiments by using the gold nanorod with the aspect ratios of 5.1 were done to verify the sensitivity enhancement effect of the gold nanorod.

Findings

In conclusion, it is evident that with the increases of the aspect ratios, the sensing sensitivity of the refractive index increases first, then gradually stabilizes or decreases. After parameter optimization, the ratios and aspect ratios of gold nanorod are chosen to be 8 nm and 12.5, respectively, which makes the optimal refractive index sensitivity of 4465.53 nm/RIU be realized. In addition, the validation experiments by using the gold nanorod with the aspect ratios of 5.1 verify the sensitivity enhancement effect of the gold nanorods.

Originality/value

This paper proposes and demonstrates a new method for the sensitivity enhancement of fiber SPR sensor. After parameter optimization, the maximum sensitivity of 4465.53 nm/RIU was achieved by using 8 nm gold nanorods with the aspect ratios of 12.5. To verify the sensitivity enhancement of the gold nanorods, the authors also did the validation experiments. The testing results indicated that after the decoration of the gold nanorods, the sensitivity of the sensing probe increases from 2190.57 nm/RIU to 2693.24 nm/RIU, which demonstrates the sensitivity enhancement effect of the gold nanorods.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to reveal the impact of consumers’ price sensitivity on their purchase intention within the scope of supermarkets. Besides, the study aims to examine the impact of consumers’ price sensitivity on their price perception level and emotions and the impact of consumers’ price level perception and emotions toward supermarkets on their purchase intention. It also aims to detect the mediating effects of consumers’ price level perception and emotions toward supermarkets between their price sensitivity and purchase intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The quota sampling method was used to form the study sample. The population was 20–69-year-old consumers. The study sample included 513 consumers, 276 of whom were men, and 237 of whom were women. Data were collected via a questionnaire by the researchers in Mersin’s (Turkey) five central counties. Explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation models were used to analyze data.

Findings

Consumers’ price sensitivity, perception of cheapness, perception of expensiveness and positive emotions toward supermarkets affect their purchase intention. Besides, price sensitivity affects their perception of cheapness while it does not affect their perception of expensiveness. It influences negative emotions, but not on positive emotions. Consumers’ perception of cheapness and perception of expensiveness have impacts on positive emotions toward supermarkets. It was additionally discovered that perception of cheapness and perception of expensiveness affected negative emotions toward supermarkets. A contributed finding was that perception of cheapness had a partial mediating role between price sensitivity and purchase intention.

Practical implications

The study provides managerial implications in terms of understanding consumers’ behavioral changes, developing effective pricing strategies and achieving competitive advantages over the other retailing companies.

Originality/value

The study illustrates that consumer behavior can be explained by a theoretical construct considering the price perception levels and emotions toward supermarkets in examining the effect of consumers’ price sensitivity on their purchase intention. Therefore, it contributes to explain consumers’ behavior by bringing the stimulus–organism–response (SOR) model into a theoretical construct.

本研究旨在揭示在超級市場的研究範疇內,消費者的價格敏感度對其購買意圖的影響。此外,本研究亦擬探討消費者的價格敏感度對其價格水平感知及情緒的影響,以及消費者的價格水平感知及對超級市場的情感對其購買意圖的影響。本研究亦旨在檢測在消費者的價格敏感度與購買意圖之間,其價格水平感知及對超級市場的情感兩者的仲介效果。

研究的設計/方法/理念

本研究用了配額抽樣法來建立研究樣本。研究的對象為20嵗至69嵗的消費者。研究樣本包括513名消費者,其中276人為男性,237人為女性。數據由研究人員透過一項問卷調查在梅爾辛省 (土耳其) 的五個中心縣取得。使用探索性因素分析,驗證性因素分析及結構方程模型來分析數據。

研究結果

研究結果顯示,消費者的價格敏感度,廉價感,對昂貴的看法及對超級市場的正面情緒,均影響其購買意圖。此外,消費者的價格敏感度會影響其廉價感,唯其對昂貴的看法則不受影響。價格敏感度對負面情緒帶來影響,但正面情緒則不受影響。消費者對廉價的看法及對昂貴的看法均影響他們對超級市場的正面情緒。研究亦發現,廉價感及對昂貴的看法均影響消費者對超級市場的負面情緒。貢獻的發現是:廉價感於價格敏感度與購買意圖之間扮演部分仲介角色。

實際的意義

本研究對管理有其作用。研究結果幫助管理人員更了解消費者行為的改變,發展有效的定價策略,以及比其它零售公司更能發展競爭優勢。

研究的原創性/價值

本研究闡明消費者行為是可以利用一個理論構建來說明的,而這個理論構建是透過考慮價格水平感知及對超級市場的情感來探討消費者的價格敏感度對其購買意圖的影響。因此,本研究透過把「刺激 – 機制 – 反應」模型變成為一個理論構建來說明消費者的行為, 在這方面,本研究是有其貢獻的.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose dot sensitivity analysis of ferromagnetic materials for topology optimization in an axi-symmetric magnetostatic system.

Design/methodology/approach

The dot sensitivity formula for the axi-symmetric system is derived as a closed form using the continuum shape sensitivity formula. The dot sensitivity method is combined with the level set method to perform topology optimization.

Findings

Derived dot sensitivity analysis can generate a ferromagnetic ring torus in a vacant region. Thus, an initial design is not needed for the design material. Two design problems are tested to demonstrate the usefulness of dot sensitivity.

Originality/value

By simultaneously using the shape sensitivity and dot sensitivity, in axi-symmetric magnetic system, the design space is expanded and it includes the interface and the inside of the vacant region. This property can reduce the possibility of local optimum convergence.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider a detailed investigation of transversal magnetic (TM) nonlinear magnetooptical integrated optical sensor. The sensitivities of two sensors are presented. The first sensor composed of a dielectric thin film surrounded by a lossless, nonmagnetic, isotropic cladding exhibiting a local Kerr‐like dielectric nonlinearity, and a magnetic substrate chosen to be an iron garnet. The second sensor is formed by exchanging the cladding and the substrate media of the first sensor. The homogenous sensitivities of both sensors are calculated as a function of the waveguide thickness and the effective refractive index. The effect of nonlinearity on the sensitivities for both sensors is investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Findings

It was found that the sensitivity for the first sensor sensitivity increases with nonlinearity. While the sensitivity for the second sensor is hardly affected by the change of nonlinearity. It was also found that the thickness of the guiding layer is a critical parameter for the sensitivity of the optical sensor with the optimum thickness being just above cut‐off in case of the first structure and at the cut‐off in the case of the second structure.

Originality/value

A detailed investigation of TM nonlinear magnetooptical integrated optical sensor is considered. The two proposed structures are used to investigate the parameters to get the optimal sensitivity, which is an important issue is the sensor design.

Abstract

Introduction: The world has become a global village with the development of globalization, technology, transportation opportunities, and socioeconomic living conditions. Multinational, multicultural businesses have been formed with the effect of globalization. Tourism activities have also gained a global dynamic. People from different cultures travel to different geographies for different purposes, and this highlights the need for managers and employees of tourism businesses to adapt to people from different cultures and multicultural environments.

Aim: In order to achieve success in intercultural communication, it is necessary to work with employees with a high level of intercultural sensitivity. Respect for different cultures without prejudices is very important in hotel businesses to provide quality service. For this reason, the high level of intercultural sensitivity of the employees in tourism businesses, which have a multicultural structure both with their customers and managers, will significantly affect their competitiveness in the sector. The aim of this study is to examine the intercultural sensitivity level of department managers working in hotel businesses according to some demographic features.

Method: The data collected via a survey were analyzed with statistical software. Frequency, percentage, etc., descriptive analysis and difference tests were performed.

Result: Intercultural sensitivity levels of hotel managers were examined according to some demographic characteristics. It was revealed that intercultural sensitivity levels of the managers working in hotel enterprises who participated in the research were far from ethnocentrism.

Implication: In the research, it was found that those who received tourism education respected intercultural differences more than those who did not receive any tourism education, and that they were affected by intercultural interaction more than those who did not receive any tourism education. For those working in the tourism sector, the recruitment of qualified personnel who received tourism education is important in order to achieve intercultural communication.

Originality of Study: The research was conducted on the department managers working in 4 and 5-star hotel enterprises in Marmaris and Bodrum districts of Muğla Province. There are a very limited number of studies in terms of determining the intercultural levels of employees and managers in hotel enterprises and examining them according to demographic characteristics. The research achieved results supporting similar studies. It is deemed significant in terms of determining according to which variables the concept of intercultural sensitivity differ and achieving results that can be generalized. Furthermore, the results which emphasized the importance of intercultural communication in the recruitment of the employees who received tourism education within the sector were also obtained.

Abstract

This chapter examines the sensitivity of executive incentive compensation to market-adjusted returns and changes in earnings for high-tech (HT) firms vis-à-vis firms (NHT) in other industries. Consistent with the hypotheses, this chapter uncovers the following evidence: First, the sensitivity of executive bonus compensation to market-adjusted returns is weaker and more symmetric for HT firms than for NHT firms (a control group), which implies that the problem of ex post settling up, documented in Leone et al. (2006), may be far less serious in HT firms than in NHT firms. Second, the sensitivity of executive incentive compensation to earnings changes is generally more symmetric for HT firms than for NHT firms, which is consistent with the view that HT firms engage in more conservative financial reporting than NHT firms. Third, the sensitivity of executive equity-based compensation to market-adjusted returns is significantly negative for HT firms compared to NHT firms when bad earnings news is announced. The results imply that HT firms, with a strong motive to attract and retain their highly talented executives, judiciously use both short-term and long-term incentive compensation schemes by compensating for a reduction of short-term incentive pay with an increase in long-term incentive pay. The issue of executive compensation has been a longstanding one in the United States and Canada, and the issue of executive compensation-performance sensitivity for HT firms is also relevant in this era of the information technology (IT) revolution, especially when prior research has shown that HT firms differ from NHT firms in their market-valuation process.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the mediating role of perceived environmental responsibility on the relationship between environmental sensitivity and pro-environmental behavioural intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of the study was 256 respondents. The snowball sampling technique was applied to reach the maximum number of respondents. The data was collected with three standardized scales. It was conducted on the general mass in the northern region of India. The hypotheses were tested by applying partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The study exhibits a significant positive effect of environmental sensitivity (ES) on environmental responsibility (ER) and environmental behavioural intentions (EBI). Environmental responsibility has a significant positive effect on environmental behavioural intentions. As expected, environmental responsibility partially mediates the relationship between environmental sensitivity and environmental behaviour intentions.

Research limitations/implications

The study has tested the theory-driven hypotheses and confirmed the indirect effect of environmental sensitivity on environmental behavioural intentions. The sample of the study is mixed with various units such as students and professionals. The sample was not represented in any particular section of society. The responses of the respondents were measured at a five-point Likert scale. For better results, the seven-point Likert scale can be better. The study can be replicated in another region of India. Multi-group analysis can be a better scope of research in the future. The model can be compared based on demographic information, region, etc.

Practical implications

The government can rectify or make various policies on environmental protection based on the findings. The results can be useful for identifying training needs for the general mass. The study suggests that the government can organize various seminars on specific issues at the general platform. Overall, the study is also useful in policymaking and implementation regarding environmental protection.

Originality/value

As per the best of our knowledge, this is the first study exploring a causal link between environmental sensitivity, environmental responsibility and environmental protection conducted in India. The observed mediation effect of the ES on the EBI through ER adds new knowledge on the topic. As per the methodology point of view, the latest guidelines regarding PLS-SEM and mediation are followed, which can be useful for research in the future. Overall, the findings of the study exhibit an important contribution to the academic, methodology and general mass.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the contentious relationship between investment and cash flow using the 2008–2009 credit supply shock as a form of the quasi-natural experiment.

Design/methodology/approach

Panel threshold models with unknown sample separation are estimated for a sample of publicly listed firms from nine African countries over the period 2003–2012. Using this approach reduces subjective or ex ante sample-splitting bias that is not accounted for in the extant literature.

Findings

The findings of the study indicate that investment–cash flow sensitivity is decreasing even during the global financial crisis (GFC) and for firms more likely to be financially constrained. The authors conclude that the usefulness of investment–cash flow sensitivity as a proxy for financial constraints is diminishing over time, even after directly addressing biases from ex ante subjective sample splitting and various forms of endogeneity.

Originality/value

The authors provide new empirical evidence from sharper tests of financial constraints for understudied African firms and highlight the need to relook at the usefulness of investment–cash flow sensitivity as a proxy of financial constraints.
