Abstract

Purpose

Seaports play an immeasurable role in the advancement of international trade. They have been the common avenue for the transportation of goods and services from one continent to another, and it has also been the linking transport of one mode of transport to another. The study sought to assess the effect of paperless information technology (IT)-based custom clearance at Ghana Seaports on businesses and industrial supply chains in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

The study conducted a survey with a sample size of 200 trading firms in Ghana.

Findings

The study discovered that IT-based port clearance has positive impact on customer order fulfillment, transaction cost reduction and supply chain relationships.

Practical implications

With the aim of making Ghana the transportation hub of businesses in the sub region, the paperless custom clearance has the potential to reduce delays at the port and improve their supply chain.

Originality/value

This paper provides researchers with a contemporary perspective toward understanding the effect of paperless custom clearance on the supply chain of businesses in the West African sub region.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the current state of the “paperless office” and explore how likely it is that libraries will be administered by librarians in paperless offices in the near future.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper surveys the literature on forecasts for the paperless office to determine whether library operations and offices could be as paperless as some of their collections might be in the near future.

Findings

The paperless office was once seen as inevitable, but is looking less far less likely given how we access and organize documents, how we read and understand information, and how we analyze what we read online and in print. Nonetheless, certain routine library operations would lend themselves almost immediately to paperless storage and retrieval processes and systems.

Research limitations/implications

More research is required on records management systems in libraries with a view to establishing largely paperless operations in the future. Implications for future research involve the establishment of processes and the testing of systems which would most easily lend themselves to standard library operations.

Practical implications

Recent research on reading and cognitive function indicates that there are certain practical implications involved in doing away with paper entirely. Nonetheless, certain routine library functions could be made paperless operations once practical considerations such as the choice of systems, establishment of work flow, policies and processes have been realized.

Originality/value

The paper makes the case for more research and exploration of the viability of paperless or near‐paperless library operations.

Abstract

Purpose

Warehouse picking is often referred to as the most labour-intensive, expensive and time consuming operation in manual warehouses. These factors are becoming even more crucial due to recent trends in manufacturing and warehousing requiring the processing of orders that are always smaller and needed in a shorter time. For this reason, in recent years more efficient and better performing systems have been developed, employing various technological solutions that can support pickers during their work. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a comparison of five paperless picking systems (i.e. barcodes handheld, RFID tags handheld, voice picking, traditional pick-to-light, RFID pick-to-light).

Design/methodology/approach

Warehouse picking is often referred to as the most labour-intensive, expensive and time consuming operation in manual warehouses. These factors are becoming even more crucial due to recent trends in manufacturing and warehousing requiring the processing of orders that are always smaller and needed in a shorter time. For this reason, in recent years more efficient and better performing systems have been developed, employing various technological solutions that can support pickers during their work. The present paper introduces a comparison of five paperless picking systems (i.e. barcodes handheld, RFID tags handheld, voice picking, traditional pick-to-light, RFID pick-to-light.

Findings

The proposed approach contributes to the understanding of the performance of different technologies in different application fields; some solutions are more suitable for a low-level warehouse, others bring greater benefits in the case of picking from multilevel shelving.

Originality/value

The study concerns an issue that until now has received very little attention in the literature. It compares some traditional solutions with some innovative ones by an economic evaluation. The presented hourly cost function also takes into account the different errors arising and their probability of occurrence.

Case Overview

This case highlights the challenges that a telecommunications company encountered with regard to implement the green concept as a part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (PCSB) is a telecommunication company that was established in 2014. PCSB integrated its CSR on 2017 to comply with the nation’s vision of 2035. The CSR initiatives were Education, Arts and Culture, Environment, and Entrepreneurship. This case revolves around the challenges of implementing PCSB’s third CSR pillar which was related to conserving the environment. In addressing this agenda, PCSB wanted to implement “going paperless” concept by launching e-billing system. Paperless or e-billing is an electronic version of bill statement that customers can view and pay online. After launching the e-billing system, PCSB realized that the older generation of the customers did not accept the “paperless” concept properly. Statistics revealed that 57% of young customers are using it, whereas only 37% of the older citizens are using it. It made PCSB concerned that how to motivate the senior citizens to go “paperless” in order to save the environment.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Using this case, the students will be able to:

  • understand the challenges that are related to going green initiative;

  • evaluate the pros and cons pertaining to going “paperless”;

Abstract

To meet the needs of the environment and to improve competitiveness through lower costs and greater responsiveness, the paperless office is once again being anticipated. While the concept of the paperless office was subject to derision until just recently due to the large volume of paper currently being produced, the large reduction in the costs of personal computers has made the paperless office viable. More than just a tool, it will redefine our concept of the document and the way we do business. Explains various facets of the paperless office. Electronic mail (e‐mail) will make the generation and transmission of letters and memos more efficient. Business forms will be better utilized through the improved processing offered by computerization and hand writing recognition software. Also addresses how document management makes information more readily accessible through the use of improved indexing.

Abstract

Traditional architectural curricula have been based on the design studio model, which emphasizes learning by doing. Under this model, a typical architectural curriculum offers a sequence of design studios in which students learn to design by actually engaging in designing. Until very recently the design studio culture remained largely unchanged. The introduction of the virtual design studio and the paperless studio in early 1990s has resulted in fundamental changes in design studio pedagogy. The paper examines the impact of computers and information technology, as applied in the paperless studio and the virtual design studio, on design studio education. Based on literature reviews on paperless studio and virtual design studio and examination of architectural studio instruction, including several experiences in conducting paperless studios, the author considers the pedagogical shift occurring in design studio instruction as a result of integrating digital media in the design studio. The paper considers two types of transformations in studio instruction: pedagogical transformations related to using digital media as a design tool and pedagogical transformations related to distributing the design studio with some or all participants in remote locations.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to investigate the likely antecedents of young Indian professionals' behavioral intention (BI) to use the income tax e‐filing service.

Design/methodology/approach

Prior to data collection, for which a self‐administered survey was conducted, lecture‐demonstrations were arranged to familiarize the potential respondents with the income tax e‐filing service. The psychometric data were analyzed for reliability and construct validity of the measures, and thereafter a regression analysis was carried out.

Findings

Regression results showed that antecedents of young Indian professionals' BI to use the income tax e‐filing service are: perceived ease‐of‐use, personal innovativeness in information technology, relative advantage (RA), performance of e‐filing service, and compatibility (COMP).

Originality/value

Past studies on income tax e‐filing are beset by problems of adopter bias, and failure to treat trust as a multi‐dimensional. In addition, these studies are skewed towards two theories, namely technology acceptance model, and theory of planned behavior. Although perceived characteristics of innovating has held considerable promise as an alternative framework, it has a chronic problem of confounding between RA and COMP. In investigating the antecedents of young Indian professionals' intention to use the income tax e‐filing, this study also tries to deal with these issues, which are important to the practice of e‐government adoption research.
