Abstract

Outlines the current research work on intelligent sensors and intelligent transducers which will be required in complex systems. Discusses the elements of an intelligent sensor and concludes that these require analogue filtering, data conversion and compensation, and a digital communication link to a common signal bus. Explains what is meant by a systems approach to intelligent sensors with layered information processing. Concludes that unless a deeper understanding of the basics of sensor systems is acquired new intelligent sensor design will be very difficult.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to examine the practical construction of a patented intelligent article of clothing with active thermal protection, outer shell with a variable thickness, system of thermoinsulating chambers, sensors and measuring systems, microcontroller and control system, actuator system and power supply system based on hardware aspect.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on practical construction and software aspect, a measuring and control program with algorithm of intelligent behavior is presented.

Findings

An intelligent article of clothing with thermal protection like a complex technical system consisting of a very complex architecture connected by different bus types to constitute a complex system acting synchronously and effectively controlled by the microcontroller containing the program which is based on the algorithm of the intelligent behavior.

Research limitations/implications

The technical systems described represent a suitable basis for experiments and scientific research during the introduction of intelligent clothing with active thermal protection into human life.

Practical implications

Introduction of intelligent clothing into human life.

Originality/value

The prototype of an intelligent article of clothing with active thermal protection was designed and constructed. At the moment it is being subjected to the first experiments of functional investigations of intelligent clothing with active thermal protection.

Purpose

The increasing demands for customized services and frequent market variations have posed challenges to managing and controlling the manufacturing processes. Despite the developments in literature in this area, less consideration has been devoted to the growth of business social networks, cloud computing, industrial Internet of things and intelligent production systems. This study recognizes the primary factors and their implications for intelligent production systems' success. In summary, the role of cloud computing, business social network and the industrial Internet of things on intelligent production systems success has been tested.

Design/methodology/approach

Intelligent production systems are manufacturing systems capable of integrating the abilities of humans, machines and processes to lead the desired manufacturing goals. Therefore, identifying the factors affecting the success of the implementation of these systems is necessary and vital. On the other hand, cloud computing and the industrial Internet of things have been highly investigated and employed in several domains lately. Therefore, the impact of these two factors on the success of implementing intelligent production systems is examined. The study is descriptive, original and survey-based, depending on the nature of the application, its target and the data collection method. Also, the introduced model and the information collected were analyzed using SMART PLS. Validity has been investigated through AVE and divergent validity. The reliability of the study has been checked out through Cronbach alpha and composite reliability obtained at the standard level for the variables. In addition, the hypotheses were measured by the path coefficients and R2, T-Value and GOF.

Findings

The study identified three variables and 19 sub-indicators from the literature associated that impact improved smart production systems. The results showed that the proposed model could describe 69.5% of the intelligence production systems' success variance. The results indicated that business social networks, cloud computing and the industrial Internet of things affect intelligent production systems. They can provide a novel procedure for intelligent comprehensions and connections, on-demand utilization and effective resource sharing.

Research limitations/implications

Study limitations are as below. First, this study ignores the interrelationships among the success of cloud computing, business social networks, Internet of things and smart production systems. Future studies can consider it. Second, we only focused on three variables. Future investigations may focus on other variables subjected to the contexts. Ultimately, there are fewer experimental investigations on the impact of underlying business social networks, cloud computing and the Internet of things on intelligent production systems' success.

Originality/value

The research and analysis outcomes are considered from various perspectives on the capacity of the new elements of Industry 4.0 for the manufacturing sector. It proposes a model for the integration of these elements. Also, original and appropriate guidelines are given for intelligent production systems investigators and professionals' designers in industry domains.

Purpose

This paper aims to provide top-level design and basic platform for intelligent application in China high-speed railway.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the analysis for the future development trends of world railway, combined with the actual development needs in China high-speed railway, The definition and scientific connotation of intelligent high-speed railway (IHSR) are given at first, and then the system architecture of IHSR are outlined, including 1 basic platform, 3 business sectors, 10 business fields, and 18 innovative applications. At last, a basic platform with cloud edge integration for IHSR is designed.

Findings

The rationality, feasibility and implementability of the system architecture of IHSR have been verified on and applied to the Beijing–Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, providing important support for the construction and operation of the world’s first IHSR.

Originality/value

This paper systematically gives the definition and connotation of the IHSR and put forward the system architecture of IHSR for first time. It will play the most important role in the design, construction and operation of IHSR.

Abstract

Purpose

Many transportation companies struggle to effectively utilize the information provided by tracking technology for performing operational control. The research as presented in this paper aims to identify the problems underlying the inability to utilize tracking technology within this context. Moreover, this paper aims to contribute to solving these problems by proposing a set of design principles based on the concept of intelligent products.

Design/methodology/approach

The study as described in this paper adopts a design science research methodology consisting of three phases. First, a case study in a transportation company has been performed to identify the problems faced when utilizing tracking technology. Second, to overcome these problems, a set of design principles has been formulated. Finally, a prototype system based on the design principles has been developed and subjected to experimental and observational evaluation.

Findings

This paper identifies the problems associated with the utilization of tracking technology for the control of transport operations. Moreover, the proposed design principles support the development of information systems which overcome the identified problems and thereby enhance the utilization of tracking technology in a transportation context.

Originality/value

The commonly held perception that tracking technology will improve the ability to perform operational control does not unequivocally stand up to empirical scrutiny. While it is widely demonstrated that tracking technology is able to accurately capture the detailed operational information, it remains a fundamental challenge to transform this abundance of information into accurate and timely control decisions. This research provides a valuable contribution with respect to tackling this challenge, by identifying problems and providing solutions related to the utilization of readily available tracking technology.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper reviews literature on the application of intelligent systems in the libraries with a special issue on the ES/AI and Robot. Also, it introduces the potential of libraries to use intelligent systems, especially ES/AI and robots.

Design/methodology/approach

Descriptive and content review methods are applied, and the researchers critically reviewed the articles related to library ESs and robots from Web of Science as a general database and Emerald as a specific database in library and information science from 2007–2017. Four scopes considered to classify the articles as technology, service, user and resource. It is found that published researches on the intelligent systems have contributed to many librarian purposes like library technical services like the organization of information resources, storage and retrieval of information resources, library public services as reference services, information desk and other purposes.

Findings

A review of the previous studies shows that ESs are a useable intelligent system in library and information science that mimic librarian expert’s behaviors to support decision making and management. Also, it is shown that the current information systems have a high potential to be improved by integration with AI technologies. In this researches, librarian robots mostly designed for detection and replacing books on the shelf. Improving the technology of gripping, localizing and human-robot interaction are the main concern in recent librarian robot research. Our conclusion is that we need to develop research in the area of smart resources.

Originality/value

This study has a new approach to the literature review in this area. We compared the published papers in the field of ES/AI and robot and library from two databases, general and specific.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce how the Taipei Public Library established an intelligent library that offers automated service equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) and a self‐checkout system. The study concludes with suggestions offered for the reference of the Taipei Public Library and other public libraries in setting up similar automated libraries in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

The study examines the functions of the Ximen Intelligent Library as provided to 106 patrons who are under observation. Afterwards, a questionnaire is distributed to obtain the personal information of these patrons and the specific nature of their patronage of the library. Items of observation and investigation include their use of the library's facilities and the return of library material to a return box located outside the library; patrons include those aged 12 years old and above.

Findings

In comparing the aspects of human resources, capital investment, and library hours, between a public reading room and an intelligent library, it is obvious that the intelligent library has many more advantages. A major difficulty for the patrons of the library is their unfamiliarity in operating the automated circulation system, compounded by the fact that very few patrons call the service line for help when they encounter difficulties. Moreover, patrons cannot always locate on the shelves the books they intend to borrow, even though the catalogue indicates that they are on the shelves.

Originality/value

The paper offers helpful information on understanding this type of library, including its patrons, their behaviour in the library, and how it operates. The results of this study can serve as a reference for improving current intelligent library services for librarians at the Taipei Public Library and at other public libraries that plan to set up RFID intelligent libraries.

Abstract

This paper aims to improve understanding of the process through which knowledge acquisition, technical tools and organisation actors can contribute to an organisation development in developing knowledge as a systemic competitive weapon. It examines the relationships between the technology and human value, because they are vital instruments of the knowledge management (KM) process. By considering that KM is related to intelligent agents, information technology (IT), and strategic decision‐support systems (SDSS), it attempts to provide useful insights on KM efficiency. A conceptual model of KM efficiency in the organisations supported by the combination of intelligent agents’ role and intelligent systems resources is presented. The model is divided in two areas: the area of technical tools for specification of intelligent systems resources and the area of intelligent agents destined to focus their roles on organisations’ performance. The major factors are discussed and directions for future research are suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concepts of intelligent buildings (IBs), and the opportunities offered by the application of computer‐aided facilities management (CAFM) systems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper definitions of IBs are investigated, particularly definitions that are embracing open standards for effective operational change, using a questionnaire survey. The survey further investigated the extension of CAFM to IBs concepts and the opportunities that such integrated systems will provide to facilities management (FM) professionals.

Findings

The results showed variation in the understanding of the concept of IBs and the application of CAFM. The survey showed that 46 per cent of respondents use a CAFM system with a majority agreeing on the potential of CAFM in delivery of effective facilities.

Research limitations/implications

The questionnaire survey results are limited to the views of the respondents within the context of FM in the UK.

Practical implications

Following on the many definitions of an IB does not necessarily lead to technologies of equipment that conform to an open standard. This open standard and documentation of systems produced by vendors is the key to integrating CAFM with other building management systems (BMS) and further harnessing the application of CAFM for IBs.

Originality/value

The paper gives experience‐based suggestions for both demand and supply sides of the service procurement to gain the feasible benefits and avoid the currently hindering obstacles, as the paper provides insight to the current and future tools for the mobile aspects of FM. The findings are relevant for service providers and operators as well.

An intelligent building incorporates two key components: automated building control systems and information management control systems. Automated building control systems include energy management systems, automated security and fire systems, and network life‐support systems. Information management control systems include telecommunications, data networking, local area networks, and other short and long haul networks. When these systems are linked together with common wiring and central controls, the building becomes intelligent. The integration of these components in Infomart, a high‐tech facility located in Dallas, Texas, is described. The usage of these components by tenants, and their possible application to library buildings are discussed.
