Abstract

This paper presents a modeling scheme for objects containing multiple materials or functionally graded materials (FGM), i.e. heterogeneous objects. The material composition variations under this modeling scheme are controlled by some reference features termed as “grading sources”. The “grading source” gathers the type of grading, position of grading and a material grading function for controlling the material transitions and a union operation is defined for interacting between different grading sources.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an automated custom-pattern-making system using the width-height independent grading method for semi-customized clothing.

Design/methodology/approach

The system reads basic patterns and graded large patterns and calculates the grading ratio of independent horizontal and vertical values on all points in a pattern. The custom pattern is automatically generated by calculating the horizontal and vertical grading amount according to individual body measurements. The system does not follow any complicated alteration rules.

Findings

The width-height independent grading method can provide custom-pattern fitted primary body circumference and length and helps to quickly produce semi-customized clothing.

Originality/value

There are few studies on automated custom-pattern-making systems without an alteration rule. This study developed an automatic custom-pattern-making system using the width-height independent grading method.

Abstract

Purpose

The identification (listing) and classification (grading) of urban heritage buildings for conservation is a challenging task for urban planners and conservation architects. Most of the world's cities depend on the expert-based evaluation method (EBEM) for listing and grading heritage buildings. The Panaji city in India provided a unique opportunity to assess the performance of the EBEM as two independent agencies carried out the heritage listing and grading process. Considering the case of Panaji, this research aims to measure the performance of EBEM used for listing and grading heritage buildings and identify the issues associated with the existing methodology.

Design/methodology/approach

This research presents a comparative analysis of the building listed and graded by the two agencies. The buildings that both agencies graded were identified and analysed using a confusion matrix. The grading classification was tested for accuracy, precision, sensitivity and F-score.

Findings

The result shows a low accuracy and F-score, which reflects the level of buildings misclassified. The misclassification is the product of the lack of standardisation of methodology and the subjectivity level involved in the EBEM.

Originality/value

Heritage listing and grading is a time-consuming process, and no city has the time and resource to conduct studies to check the accuracy. The cities in India and across the world, which follow a similar EBEM process, should consider this study's finding and revisit their methodology and develop a more reliable methodology for listing and grading heritage buildings.

Abstract

Purpose

In high voltage direct current cable systems, cable joints are known as the least reliable components due to the use of multiple dielectrics. Resulting from the electric field and temperature depending conductivity of the different dielectrics, field enhancement at critical areas, e.g. triple points, may result in accelerated aging and the failure of the component. To reduce the stress, different field grading techniques are applied. The purpose of this study is to investigate different grading techniques for cable joints. Different shapes of the electrode and a varying nonlinear conductivity of field grading materials (FGM) are used for the simulation of the electric field.

Design/methodology/approach

Coupled electro-thermal field simulations are applied for different joint geometries, to obtain the stationary electric field. Electric field simulations in cable joint using geometric and nonlinear field grading techniques are shown.

Findings

Using the geometric field grading, the shape of the stress cone determines the field values in critical areas (triple points). High stress reduction is obtained for a certain curvature of the stress cone. For the nonlinear stress control, materials with a higher conductivity in comparison to the cable and the joint material are used. A field reduction is obtained by increasing the total conductivity. On the other hand, this is also increasing the insulation losses within the total FGM. More applicable is the decrease of the switching field or the increase of nonlinearity, which is only locally increase the conductivity and the insulation losses. Furthermore, simulations results show that an approximately constant field reduction is obtained, if the nonlinearity is above a certain threshold.

Research limitations/implications

This study is restricted to a field dependency of FGM only. For impulse voltages, high temperature and electric conductivity values my result in a thermal runaway. Furthermore, only direct current field grading techniques are studied.

Originality/value

The field grading of cable joints, using geometric and nonlinear techniques, is analyzed. A comparison between the electric field, by varying the curvature of the ground stress cone or the FGM conductivity constants in a complex joint geometry is novel. With its effect on the electric fields, general requirements for the geometry (geometric field grading) or the values of the FGM constants (nonlinear field grading) are defined to obtain a sufficient field grading.

Abstract

Purpose

Fair grading produces learning ability levels that are understandable and acceptable to both learners and instructors. Norm-referenced grading can be achieved by several means such as z score, K-means and a heuristic. However, these methods typically deliver the varied degrees of grading fairness depending on input score data.

Design/methodology/approach

To attain the fairest grading, this paper proposes a hybrid algorithm that integrates z score, K-means and heuristic methods with a novel fairness objective function as a decision function.

Findings

Depending on an experimented data set, each of the algorithm's constituent methods could deliver the fairest grading results with fairness degrees ranging from 0.110 to 0.646. We also pointed out key factors in the fairness improvement of norm-referenced achievement grading.

Originality/value

The main contributions of this paper are four folds: the definition of fair norm-referenced grading requirements, a hybrid algorithm for fair norm-referenced grading, a fairness metric for norm-referenced grading and the fairness performance results of the statistical, heuristic and machine learning methods.

Abstract

Purpose

The study seeks to analyze concepts of “career grades” and “job grading,” to highlight their importance and objectives for the efficiency of administrative systems. In addition, it identifies the international standards that can be used to draw grading systems. It explores the most important types of grade structures. It also clarifies grading systems in the Egyptian administrative system. It indicates some methods that can be considered a form of career progression.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs descriptive, analytical, as well as, legal approaches; it analyzes the information given in the study in terms of relevant legal texts.

Findings

The study identifies precise definitions of both career grades and job grading, referring to these concepts in the Egyptian administrative system. It also suggests that there is no ideal hierarchy to be applied in all administrative systems. Therefore, the study provides some criteria that help to form the appropriate grade structure for each system.

Originality/value

The study analyses some literature on “job grading,” its objectives, its criteria and its main types, presenting an integrated framework that can be used to develop career-structure systems. Finally, the study identifies some methods that can be considered as a means of grading.

Examines the development of the hotel grading scheme for the island of Jersey. A brief history of Jersey hotel grading leads to the need for a new scheme and why an independent route was taken rather than joining the mainland Tourist Board′s Crown scheme. An outline of the development and form of the new scheme is provided along with an explanation of its operation. The idiosyncrasies of operating an island hotel scheme are examined, indicating the need for an individual approach to the solving of hotel registration and grading difficulties.

Abstract

Art and architecture are multidisciplinary fields with complicated assessments that, similar to the teaching and the learning process, are inconsistent with common assessment models. During submission, the presence of jurors, who have different approaches and standards for evaluating design projects, makes this issue more complicated. Numerous assessment and grading models are being used in architecture departments around the world. Some of these methods are based on the experiences of instructors from their lives as students, whereas some are based on university systems. Grading policies seem to be clear in most fields, but when the object of grading is an artistic product with different levels to be assessed and graded, the issue becomes more complex. This observation is especially true in the case in which quality is given a numerical grade.

The nature of skills that students are expected to develop and that are going to be assessed is often subjective. Such skills include invention, problem solving, and presentation. Problems of reliability, personal criterion, and unique perceptions lend difficulty in assessing such skills using traditional methods.

This research suggests that a criteria-based assessment and grading model is a more effective model in promoting student learning, making assessment and grading less complex and more explicit. The effectiveness and reliability of the proposed and implemented criteria-based grading system has been tested at Eastern Mediterranean University using distributed questionnaires and a Rasch measurement system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to perform elastic stress and deformation analysis of a functionally graded hollow disk under different conditions (rotation, gravity, internal pressure, temperature with variable heat generation) and their combinations.

Design/methodology/approach

The classical method of solution, Navier's equation, is used to solve the governing equation. The analysis considers thermal and mechanical boundary conditions and takes into account the variation of material properties according to a power law function of the radius of the disk and grading parameter.

Findings

The findings of the study reveal distinct trends and behaviors based on different grading parameters. The influence of gravity is found to be negligible, resulting in similar patterns to the pure rotation case. Variable heat generation introduces non-linear temperature profiles and higher displacements, with stress values influenced by grading parameters.

Practical implications

The study provides valuable insights into the behavior of displacement and stresses in hollow disks, offering a deeper understanding of their mechanical response under varying conditions. These insights can be useful in the design and analysis of functionally graded hollow disks in various engineering applications.

Originality/value

The originality and value of this study lies in the consideration of various loading combinations of rotation, gravity, internal pressure and temperature with variable heat generation. Furthermore, the study of effect of various angular rotations, temperatures and pressures expands the understanding of the mechanical behavior of such structures, contributing to the existing body of knowledge in the field.
