Abstract

Purpose – In this chapter we highlight the potential of critical and poststructural paradigms and associated qualitative research approaches for future research in strategy. In addition, we aim to contribute to the proliferation of applications of qualitative methodologies as well as to facilitate the diversity of qualitative inquiry approaches in the strategy field.

Methodology/Approach – Building on insights from standpoint theory, we discuss the importance and necessity of cultivating critical and poststructural paradigms in strategy. Furthermore, we review three related qualitative inquiry approaches (i.e., discourse analysis, deconstruction, and genealogy) and develop suggestions for their utilization in future strategy research on emerging market economies.

Findings – We highlight key concepts of critical and poststructural paradigms as well as of the selected approaches and provide a variety of examples relevant to strategy research to illustrate potential applications and analytic considerations.

Originality/Value of chapter – Critical and poststructural paradigms and related research methodologies are underutilized in strategy research; however, they are important contributions to paradigmatic and methodological diversity in the field generally and necessary approaches for developing our understanding of strategy phenomena in the context of emerging market economies specifically.

Abstract

The history of economics has often been described as the “history of economic thought.” In this essay, I explore an alternative perspective that builds on the French tradition of historical epistemology and treats economics as a social practice. I argue that a practice-based view provides a more philosophically robust conception of historiography and a richer field of investigation for historians of economics.

Abstract

Filby, P. William. American & British Genealogy & Heraldry: A Selected List of Books. 3d ed. Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1983. $49.95. 736p. LC 84—865. ISBN 0—88082—004—7. OCLC 9322929. With the publication of his first edition of American & British Genealogy & Heraldry in 1970, William Filby began an enterprise that was to qualify him as the leading contemporary bibliographer of genealogy and local history. Revised first in 1975 and now in 1983, this important work has grown through successive stages to a size and scope that is unmatched in its field. When the first two editions of his work were published, Filby was serving as director of the Maryland Historical Society. Since his retirement from that post, he has devoted his time to writing or editing several important genealogical works, notably the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, A Bibliography of Ship Passenger Lists, and Who's Who in Genealogy and Heraldry, in addition to this third edition of his bibliography.

Abstract

Genealogy is thought to be the third most popular hobby in the United States today. Considering the recent impact of Roots, there is every indication it will remain so. A strong argument can be made that libraries should heed this interest and begin to develop genealogical collections. They should forget old prejudices, accept responsibility for this informational need, and begin an entirely new relationship with ancestor hunters and genealogists.

The purpose of this study is to describe the culture of Google using memetic mapping.

1009

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to describe the culture of Google using memetic mapping.

Design/methodology/approach

Printed and online texts published about Google are coded, and 40 memes are discovered. Memes are placed into six levels of organizational culture, namely, basic assumptions, values, norms, artifacts, work procedures and human resources practices.

Findings

To understand the formation of Google’s culture in the course of history, genealogy method is applied. In this approach, parent of each meme (the culture from which the meme is adopted) is identified. In total, 85 cultures that had impacts on the emergence of Google’s culture are recognized and analyzed.

Practical implications

Practical implications are presented as memetic engineering technique, which is capable of diagnosing and treating defective memes to facilitate and enhance the internal dynamics of corporate members.

Social implications

The application of this approach for tackling the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic is discussed through a real-world example.

Originality/value

Memetic mapping is a powerful tool for managers, consultants and organizational researchers to explore the cultural phenomenon and change it to achieve higher performance.

Abstract

Purpose

-- This article seeks to introduce librarians and paraprofessionals to genealogical information sources.

Design/methodology/approach

-- Free and subscription genealogical/family history information research sources were reviewed in order to provide a selection of resources appropriate as an introduction to the basics of genealogical research.

Findings

-- The genealogist, just like any other patron, has moved beyond use of only the traditional printed research tools. Librarians must be prepared to handle the variety of in-person and electronic requests from this growing population.

Research limitations/implications

-- Due to innumerable and diverse genealogical information sources, it is impossible to review all of sites. However, the author offers a comprehensive overview of the most used and recommended sources.

Originality/value

-- This article provides a needed introduction to genealogical and family history resources for the general reference librarian and paraprofessional, with the ultimate objective of providing germinal knowledge and foundational confidence when offering genealogical reference services.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to suggest a genealogy of the concept of information beyond the 20th century. The chapter discusses how the concept of information culture might provide a way of formulating such a genealogic strategy. The chapter approaches this purpose by providing a general narrative of premodern information cultures, examining works on early-modern scholars and 18th century savants and discussion of what seems to be a Foucauldian rupture in the conceptualization of information in 19th century England. The findings of the chapter are situated in the thinking that a genealogy of information would reveal that information had specific purposes in specific settings.

Abstract

Accounting history has tended to ignore the accounting research enterprise, focusing instead on particular episodes or periods, such as histories of standards setting or histories of the accounting profession. In effect, methodological and theoretical differences within the accounting research discipline have so profoundly divided the discipline that researchers working in one area are relatively unable or unwilling to understand the key issues in other areas. This chapter seeks to shed some light on the greatest divide in accounting research: the divide between positive and critical accounting research. This chapter argues that both positive and critical accounting research can trace their origins to certain key figures who were doctoral students at the University of Chicago in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The chapter employs Foucault’s concept of genealogy to examine the origins of the positivist and critical paradigms in accounting research.

Abstract

Purpose

Tourism in Coimbra today is influenced by the fact that the Univer(s)city was distinguished as a World Heritage Site in 2013. The number of visits has grown very significantly in recent years, but the diversification of the tourist offer is still weak and unable to take advantage of existing resources. This paper aims to present genealogy tourism as an alternative urban cultural tourism in Coimbra.

Design/methodology/approach

Methodology involved mapping the Jewish culture elements in the city of Coimbra, and a route was outlined and proposed.

Findings

Genealogy tourism resources are identified in the historic centre of the city. These alternative spaces need urban rehabilitation and (re)functionalisation, which allowed the authors to rethink tourism in Coimbra. They are the motivation to visit for all urban cultural tourists, especially Israelis/Jews, and provide contact with places where the experiences of ancestors combine with the history and memory of places, with recent discoveries and the elements of Jewish culture in the city.

Originality/value

It is concluded that the quantity, diversity, authenticity and singularity of the heritage resources that bear witness to the Jewish presence in Coimbra are sufficient assets to create a route, to enrich the tourist experience in the city and to include the destination in the Sephardic routes.
