This chapter examines women’s participation at the Portuguese punk scene, suggesting the use of fanzines as an alternative medium able to spread feminist narratives. Through the words and pictures of the Portuguese punk fanzines – X.cute, Modern Girl, Global Riot, Sisterly, Mulibu and Cuecas Quentes – we highlight the strength of the symbolic resistance of the Portuguese punk women. This approach allows us to show the existence of an imaginary structure of equality within an actual scenario of inequality and reproduction of society’s gendered structure. The theoretical discussion involves themes related to feminism, the punk movement (Guerra, 2013, 2017; Guerra & Silva, 2015; Guerra & Straw, 2017), the riot grrrl scene (McRobbie & Garber; 1987; McRobbie, 2000, 2009), and the universe of alternative media and fanzines (Guerra & Quintela, 2014, 2016; Triggs, 2006; Worley, 2015).

The character, growth and demand for football information services in England and Wales is examined. Questionnaires were sent to football clubs and supporters to investigate the quantity, quality and types of information services available, and whether the demand for football information is being met. It was found that there is more football information available than previously, through a wider range of services, and that demand for club information is growing. However, supporters feel the information is often of poor quality. The growth in football information services is attributed to the appeal of the game to non‐traditional supporters and the use of information services to market clubs as global “brands”. Democratic supporters movements have had a major influence on the development of football information services. The Internet is set to have a big impact.

An investigation of what happens when fans take material related to popular TV science fiction/fantasy programmes without permission, give the copyright holder full credit, and use it to promote the show from which they have taken the material. The web sites relating to two TV series were chosen for study: Forever Knight and the X‐Files. A large number of owners of relevant fan sites were surveyed by questionnaire. The investigation showed that the approaches taken by the copyright holders in the two case studies differed quite markedly. Fox (X files) takes a harder line than Sony (Forever Knight) appear to have done. The issue of rights ownership is becoming increasingly important, especially with the advent of the Internet. Though considered by many to be something of a trivial area, fan activities have in fact been at the forefront of the copyright conflict taking place on the Web.

This paper examines the importance of the Internet for supporters of football clubs. It looks at Web sites that allow fans to become involved in the running of their clubs or the decision‐making process at a lower level. Supporters’ Trusts, independent supporters associations (ISAs), fanzines and various government initiatives all receive attention. The use of the Internet by fans opposed to Wimbledon Football Club’s intended move to Milton Keynes is highlighted. It is argued that the Web is an ideal forum for fan power, providing a cheap and effective means of mobilising support for campaigns in conjunction with traditional lobbying techniques. This is one area where the Internet is sure to have a sustained impact.

To date, many mainstream ILS practitioners and educationalists have ignored fan‐produced literature due to the inherently ephemeral nature of the material and the fact that the majority of the information is outside normal bibliographic control. The advent of the Internet has provided fans with a new forum to create and exchange information, much of which is unparalleled in its richness and depth. This material can enrich library collections, while the growing sub‐cultures of electronic fan information can benefit from the skills offered by information professionals. Using case studies, the paper illustrates the range and depth of fan information on the Net and proposes a model to enable information professionals to utilise and control the wealth of fan‐based literature that is now becoming visible. The paper concludes that information professionals should re‐examine the world of fan‐based literature in order to become better informed about the information seeking activities of potential library users and to use their existing expertise to make links between the world of fan literature, and the resources of public and academic libraries.

This introduction locates the 11 chapters of the volume under three headings: Agency-Affirming Places, Overtly Hostile or Agency-Denying Places, and Covertly Negating Places. Each chapter is summarized briefly, detailing its methods and key findings. Following the summaries, the editors point to common themes among the chapters and discuss the relationship between media and physical and symbolic gender-based violence as illustrated in the chapters.

This personal, non-fiction essay explores the punk subculture and themes of death as a teenager growing up in the post-industrial city of Buffalo, New York, in the 1990s. Within this text, punk and indie music releases, exposure to live performances in unconventional spaces, independent record stores as an alternative education, and participatory fanzine culture, serve as a pivotal catalyst for rejuvenation and release – for creativity and self-expression while grieving the loss of one’s mother from cancer. The punk subculture and its related ‘do-it-yourself’ (DIY) media communities which eventually led to a professorship prove to be both inspirational and a transformative method of healing and being.
