Abstract

This study examined the moderating effect of emotion perception – a basic component of emotional intelligence – on the relationship between career commitment and career success. White‐collar employees from a diverse set of occupations and organizations in Malaysia were surveyed. Moderated multiple regression results showed that career commitment predicted objective career success (i.e. salary level) only for employees with average to high emotion perception but not for those with low emotion perception. Emotion perception, however, did not moderate the effects of career commitment on subjective career success (i.e. career satisfaction). Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to reveal the impact of consumers’ price sensitivity on their purchase intention within the scope of supermarkets. Besides, the study aims to examine the impact of consumers’ price sensitivity on their price perception level and emotions and the impact of consumers’ price level perception and emotions toward supermarkets on their purchase intention. It also aims to detect the mediating effects of consumers’ price level perception and emotions toward supermarkets between their price sensitivity and purchase intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The quota sampling method was used to form the study sample. The population was 20–69-year-old consumers. The study sample included 513 consumers, 276 of whom were men, and 237 of whom were women. Data were collected via a questionnaire by the researchers in Mersin’s (Turkey) five central counties. Explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation models were used to analyze data.

Findings

Consumers’ price sensitivity, perception of cheapness, perception of expensiveness and positive emotions toward supermarkets affect their purchase intention. Besides, price sensitivity affects their perception of cheapness while it does not affect their perception of expensiveness. It influences negative emotions, but not on positive emotions. Consumers’ perception of cheapness and perception of expensiveness have impacts on positive emotions toward supermarkets. It was additionally discovered that perception of cheapness and perception of expensiveness affected negative emotions toward supermarkets. A contributed finding was that perception of cheapness had a partial mediating role between price sensitivity and purchase intention.

Practical implications

The study provides managerial implications in terms of understanding consumers’ behavioral changes, developing effective pricing strategies and achieving competitive advantages over the other retailing companies.

Originality/value

The study illustrates that consumer behavior can be explained by a theoretical construct considering the price perception levels and emotions toward supermarkets in examining the effect of consumers’ price sensitivity on their purchase intention. Therefore, it contributes to explain consumers’ behavior by bringing the stimulus–organism–response (SOR) model into a theoretical construct.

本研究旨在揭示在超級市場的研究範疇內,消費者的價格敏感度對其購買意圖的影響。此外,本研究亦擬探討消費者的價格敏感度對其價格水平感知及情緒的影響,以及消費者的價格水平感知及對超級市場的情感對其購買意圖的影響。本研究亦旨在檢測在消費者的價格敏感度與購買意圖之間,其價格水平感知及對超級市場的情感兩者的仲介效果。

研究的設計/方法/理念

本研究用了配額抽樣法來建立研究樣本。研究的對象為20嵗至69嵗的消費者。研究樣本包括513名消費者,其中276人為男性,237人為女性。數據由研究人員透過一項問卷調查在梅爾辛省 (土耳其) 的五個中心縣取得。使用探索性因素分析,驗證性因素分析及結構方程模型來分析數據。

研究結果

研究結果顯示,消費者的價格敏感度,廉價感,對昂貴的看法及對超級市場的正面情緒,均影響其購買意圖。此外,消費者的價格敏感度會影響其廉價感,唯其對昂貴的看法則不受影響。價格敏感度對負面情緒帶來影響,但正面情緒則不受影響。消費者對廉價的看法及對昂貴的看法均影響他們對超級市場的正面情緒。研究亦發現,廉價感及對昂貴的看法均影響消費者對超級市場的負面情緒。貢獻的發現是:廉價感於價格敏感度與購買意圖之間扮演部分仲介角色。

實際的意義

本研究對管理有其作用。研究結果幫助管理人員更了解消費者行為的改變,發展有效的定價策略,以及比其它零售公司更能發展競爭優勢。

研究的原創性/價值

本研究闡明消費者行為是可以利用一個理論構建來說明的,而這個理論構建是透過考慮價格水平感知及對超級市場的情感來探討消費者的價格敏感度對其購買意圖的影響。因此,本研究透過把「刺激 – 機制 – 反應」模型變成為一個理論構建來說明消費者的行為, 在這方面,本研究是有其貢獻的.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of emotion perception ability through two different paradigms (self-report and ability-based) on an individual's motivation to lead, an individual's desire to assume leadership roles.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have used a survey method in this study. The authors collected data from 172 undergraduate students.

Findings

The findings indicate that emotion perception ability was significantly related to MTL. The authors also found that emotion perception ability was more substantially related to the non-calculative dimension of MTL than others.

Originality/value

To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to show the relationship of emotion perception ability to motivation to lead. Organizations can use the finding to screen and train future leaders using an ability-based test of emotion perception similar to one the authors have presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how negotiators’ self-evaluated emotion perception is related to value claiming under two incentive schemes. Adopting an ability-motivation interaction perspective, the authors hypothesize that the relationship will be stronger in the contingent (upon value-claiming performance) versus fixed (non-contingent upon value-claiming performance) pay condition.

Design/methodology/approach

Multi-level analysis of data (120 participants, 60 dyads) from a laboratory study provided evidence supporting the hypothesis proposed in this paper.

Findings

Emotional perception was indeed more strongly related to value claiming in the contingent pay condition than in the fixed pay condition. Negotiators’ emotion perception also had a direct, positive linkage with relationship satisfaction, regardless of the incentive scheme.

Research limitations/implications

The limitations of the current paper include self-report measures of emotion perception, a US student sample and a focus on value claiming as the instrumental outcome. The authors urge future research to address these limitations in replicating and extending the current findings.

Originality/value

The present paper is the first to explicitly test the moderating role of incentive schemes on the linkage between negotiators’ emotion perception and performance. The findings not only show the context-dependent predictive value of negotiators’ emotion perception but also shed light on both negotiation and emotional intelligence (EI) research.

Abstract

Purpose

Research on emotion in the context of risk perception has historically focused on negative emotions, and has emphasized the effect of these negative emotions on the perception of risk amongst those who oppose (rather than support) contentious issues. Drawing on theory, the purpose of this paper is to hypothesize that both positive and negative emotions are correlated with risk perceptions regarding contentious public issues and that this occurs amongst supporters and opponents alike.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper explores the relationship between emotions and perceived risk through consideration of the highly contentious case of nuclear energy in Saskatchewan, Canada. The analysis uses data from a representative telephone survey of 1,355 residents.

Findings

The results suggest that positive emotions, like negative emotions, are related to nuclear energy risk perceptions. Emotions are related to risk perception amongst both supporters and opponents.

Research limitations/implications

The data set’s limited number of emotion measures and single public issue focus, combined with the survey’s cross-sectional design, make this research exploratory in nature. Future research should incorporate multiple positive emotions, explore opposition, and support across a range of contentious public issues, and consider experimental models to assess causal relationships.

Practical implications

The paper offers insights into how public sector managers must be cognizant of the emotional underpinnings of risk perceptions amongst both supporters and opponents of contentious public issues.

Originality/value

This paper builds on and expands previous work by considering both positive and negative emotions and both supporters and opponents of contentious issues.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify how psychological contract perceptions are used as a lens through which employees make sense of their workplace emotions. Applying Rousseau’s (1995, 2011) conceptualisation of psychological contracts it examines how the emotions linked to both promise perceptions (broken/exceeded) and regulation are made sense of in relation to perceptions of contract type.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper takes a unique perspective into the role perceptions of psychological contract type play in the process of emotional sensemaking using qualitative thematic analysis of 30 in-depth interviews. A range of occupations are represented and all participants worked in a full-time capacity.

Findings

The paper identifies how the predominant relationship frame (transactional/relational) is used by employees when making sense of the emotions recalled during specific psychological contract events, as well as the emotions they feel are necessary to regulate while at work.

Research limitations/implications

The mean age of the study sample was 26 years, comparatively young in terms of the span of the employment age bracket. Taking a lifespan approach would potentially broaden the understanding of how employees use their predominant relationship frame in the process of emotional sensemaking at different stages of their life and careers.

Originality/value

This paper identifies an important work-related cue used in the active regulation of specific emotions whilst at work, contributing to both the psychological contract and emotion literature.

Abstract

Purpose

When customers feel that they have no choice but to stay with their current provider to obtain a service that they need, they feel captive. This study aims to investigate customer captivity as a type of vulnerability and evaluate its effects on customers’ service evaluation and word-of-mouth (WOM) behavior, as well as to identify solutions that reduce customers’ feelings of captivity and improve their well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

This sequential, quantitative–qualitative, mixed-methods study draws from a survey of 1,017 customers and a qualitative analysis of 20 in-depth semi-structured interviews. Moderated mediation analysis is used to test the quantitative hypotheses; a thematic analysis explores the qualitative data.

Findings

The results of the quantitative study show that captivity emotions and price unfairness perceptions are two manifestations of customer captivity, which directly and indirectly affect service evaluations and WOM behavior. The findings of the qualitative study highlight how captive customers use emotional support-seeking negative word-of-mouth (NWOM) as a solution to reduce their captivity emotions and improve their well-being, by reinforcing their social ties and regaining a sense of control.

Research limitations/implications

This study advances transformative service research by demonstrating how captivity affects customers’ well-being and customer vulnerability literature by investigating captivity as a type of vulnerability. It contributes to service marketing literature by identifying customer captivity as a boundary condition for generic service evaluation models.

Practical implications

Captive customers seek emotional support and consequently spread NWOM. Therefore, it is critical for service providers to reduce customers’ captivity feelings and implement adequate solutions to prevent NWOM and decrease the risk of negative impacts on their profitability.

Originality/value

Any customer can become vulnerable, due to contextual circumstances. This study focuses on customer captivity as a type of vulnerability and proposes adapted solutions to improve customers’ well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the mediating role of pre‐recovery emotions on the relationship between severity of service failure and post‐recovery positive and negative emotions and to examine the mediating role of justice perceptions on the interaction between pre‐recovery and post‐recovery emotions.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative data were collected in the form of questionnaire which was applied to 238 respondents. The respondents include the consumers who experienced a service failure followed by a service recovery. In this study, post‐recovery positive and negative emotions were dependent variables whereas severity of service failure, pre‐recovery emotions and three dimensions of justice perceptions were the other main variables. In line with this purpose, eight hypotheses aiming to clarify the relations among these variables were tested using correlation and hierarchical regression analysis.

Findings

The results suggest that post‐recovery negative emotions were affected by pre‐recovery emotions with the mediating role of distributive justice perceptions. The findings of this research reveal that dealing successfully with pre‐recovery emotions and integrating these emotions with favorable distributive justice perceptions have critical importance in mitigating the post‐recovery negative emotions.

Practical implications

During service recovery, service providers must concentrate on positive and negative emotions concurrently. Besides, managers also have to take pre‐recovery emotions into consideration and exert a special effort on distributive justice in order to decrease the intensity of post‐recovery negative emotions. Selection of recovery types, the effects of these on distributive justice perception and responding promptly to prevent pre‐recovery negative emotions are critically important for service providers.

Originality/Value

This study differs by focusing on pre‐recovery and post‐recovery emotions within a holistic view, which recommends the service providers an alternative perspective for being more proactive.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present and test a conceptual framework for the consequences of price unfairness, positing trust and emotions as two important mediators of the perception of price unfairness and its relationship to switching and negative word‐of‐mouth intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

An experiment with one factor with three levels (price unfairness: no price unfairness vs low price unfairness vs high price unfairness) is applied to 253 participants. The mediation analysis is made using bootstrapping procedure.

Findings

The findings reveal that existing customers that compare their price to a lower price offered to prospective customers experience the perception of price unfairness that, in turn, triggers negative behavioral intentions toward the company, through trust (cognitive driver) and negative emotions (emotional driver).

Practical implications

The findings indicate that companies should consider the damage that targeted promotions to new customers may do among existing customers in the long run. They also highlight the importance of the companies' strategies to build consumer trust over time as this construct seems only partially affected by perceived price unfairness and is a key determinant of customers' behavioral intentions.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the understanding of price unfairness perception and its negative behavioral consequences, testing and validating a parallel mediating process with trust and negative emotions as mediators.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply a thoroughly tested model to the study of how corporate social responsibility (CSR) perceptions impact customers’ affective and behavioural responses in the banking industry. As a contribution to the previous literature, the moderating role of the type of company (savings banks vs. commercial banks) in the conceptual model is explored.

Design/methodology/approach

A structural equation model is tested with information collected from 648 customers of savings banks and 476 customers of commercial banks.

Findings

The findings demonstrate that CSR perceptions positively impact customer identification with the banking company, emotions, satisfaction, recommendation and repurchase behaviours in both samples. However, CSR is perceived differently by customers depending on the type of banking company that implements it. Thus, its effects on customers’ affective and behavioural responses are different.

Practical implications

Practitioners should not try to promote the best CSR approach for a standardised organisation, regardless of its special industry characteristics. They should be aware of the differences customers perceive in companies to adapt their CSR initiatives to the expectations of their targets.

Originality/value

The contributions of the paper are two-fold. On the one hand, the banking industry has been scarcely explored by previous scholars. On the other hand, the authors explain the role that the type of banking company plays in the conceptual model proposed in the paper because significant differences are observed among savings bank customers and commercial bank customers concerning their affective and behavioural responses to CSR perceptions.
