Abstract

Meta-organizations are crucial devices to tackle grand challenges. Yet, by bringing together different organizations, with potentially diverging views on these grand challenges, meta-organizations need to cope with the emergence of contradictory underlying social orders. Do contradictory orders affect meta-organizations’ ability to govern grand challenges and if so, how? This paper investigates these essential questions by focusing on the evolution and intermeshing of social orders within international governance meta-organizations. Focusing on the International Whaling Commission and the grand challenge of whale conservation, we show how over time incompatible social orders between the meta-organization and its members emerge, evolve and clash. As our study shows, this clash of social orders ultimately removes the “decidability” of certain social orders at the meta-organizational level. We define decidability as the possibility for actors to reach collective decisions about changing an existing social order that falls under a collective’s mandate. We argue that maintaining decidability is a key condition for grand challenges’ governance success while the emergence of “non-decidability” of controversial social orders can lead to substantial failure. We contribute to both the emerging literature on grand challenges and organization theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to employ a multivariate nonlinear regression analysis to establish a predictive model for the final fracture area, while accounting for the impact of individual parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

This analysis is based on the numerical simulation data obtained, using the hybrid finite element–discrete element (FE–DE) method. The forecasting model was compared with the numerical results and the accuracy of the model was evaluated by the root mean square (RMS) and the RMS error, the mean absolute error and the mean absolute percentage error.

Findings

The multivariate nonlinear regression model can accurately predict the nonlinear relationships between injection rate, leakoff coefficient, elastic modulus, permeability, Poisson’s ratio, pore pressure and final fracture area. The regression equations obtained from the Newton iteration of the least squares method are strong in terms of the fit to the six sensitive parameters, and the model follow essentially the same trend with the numerical simulation data, with no systematic divergence detected. Least absolutely deviation has a significantly weaker performance than the least squares method. The percentage contribution of sensitive parameters to the final fracture area is available from the simulation results and forecast model. Injection rate, leakoff coefficient, permeability, elastic modulus, pore pressure and Poisson’s ratio contribute 43.4%, −19.4%, 24.8%, −19.2%, −21.3% and 10.1% to the final fracture area, respectively, as they increased gradually. In summary, (1) the fluid injection rate has the greatest influence on the final fracture area. (2)The multivariate nonlinear regression equation was optimally obtained after 59 iterations of the least squares-based Newton method and 27 derivative evaluations, with a decidability coefficient R2 = 0.711 representing the model reliability and the regression equations fit the four parameters of leakoff coefficient, permeability, elastic modulus and pore pressure very satisfactorily. The models follow essentially the identical trend with the numerical simulation data and there is no systematic divergence. The least absolute deviation has a significantly weaker fit than the least squares method. (3)The nonlinear forecasting model of physical parameters of hydraulic fracturing established in this paper can be applied as a standard for optimizing the fracturing strategy and predicting the fracturing efficiency in situ field and numerical simulation. Its effectiveness can be trained and optimized by experimental and simulation data, and taking into account more basic data and establishing regression equations, containing more fracturing parameters will be the further research interests.

Originality/value

The nonlinear forecasting model of physical parameters of hydraulic fracturing established in this paper can be applied as a standard for optimizing the fracturing strategy and predicting the fracturing efficiency in situ field and numerical simulation. Its effectiveness can be trained and optimized by experimental and simulation data, and taking into account more basic data and establishing regression equations, containing more fracturing parameters will be the further research interests.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to critique Gödel's and Tarski's axiomatic approach in their theorems of incompleteness of the arithmetical system.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical theory of self‐referencing is contrasted and an original contribution made by an extension of the same theorem beyond Godel and Tarski, showing how the Islamic epistemology contributes to establishing new thought in mathematical logic with unity of the divine law.

Findings

The paper finds that behind the critique of the axioms of provability and non‐provability, decidability and undecidability, lies the morally valid episteme of all socio‐scientific systems and that this is as true of social systems as it is of the hard‐core sciences.

Research limitations/implications

The paper has the potential for extension to applications, which has not been included.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to new and original thinking in the area of mathematical logic of self‐referencing theorem in the framework of unity of the divine law as the episteme of “everything”.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper provides a new Digital Library architecture that supports polyhierarchic ontology structure where a child concept representing an interdisciplinary subject area can have multiple parent concepts. The paper further proposes an access control mechanism for controlled access to different concepts by different users depending on the authorizations available to each such user. The proposed model thus provides a better knowledge representation and faster searching possibility of documents for modern Digital Libraries with controlled access to the system.

Design/methodology/approach

Since the proposed Digital Library Architecture considers polyhierarchy, the underlying hierarchical structure becomes a Directed Acyclic Graph instead of a tree. A new access control model has been developed for such a polyhierarchic ontology structure. It has been shown that such model may give rise to undecidability problem. A client specific view generation mechanism has been developed to solve the problem.

Findings

The paper has three major contributions. First, it provides better knowledge representation for present-day digital libraries, as new interdisciplinary subject areas are getting introduced. Concepts representing interdisciplinary subject areas will have multiple parents, and consequently, the library ontology introduces a new set of nodes representing document classes. This concept also provides faster search mechanism. Secondly, a new access control model has been introduced for the ontology structure where a user gets authorizations to access a concept node only if its credential supports it. Lastly, a client-based view generation algorithm has been developed so that a client’s access remains limited to its view and avoids any possibility of undecidability in authorization specification.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed model, in its present form, supports only read and browse facilities. It would later be extended for addition and update of documents. Moreover, the paper explains the model in a single user environment. It will be augmented later to consider simultaneous access from multiple users.

Practical implications

The paper emphasizes the need for changing the present digital library ontology to a polyhierarchic structure to provide proper representation of knowledge related to the concepts covering interdisciplinary subject areas. Possible implementation strategies have also been mentioned. This design method can also be extended for other semantic web applications.

Originality/value

This paper offers a new knowledge management strategy to cover the gradual proliferation of interdisciplinary subject areas along with a suitable access control model for a digital library ontology. This methodology can also be extended for other semantic web applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to advance an understanding of the concept of advice and its relationship to documents, information and knowledge.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual analysis of a sample of 48 relevant advice studies and two books, directly informed by documentation and information theories, was conducted to find out how researchers have approached advice conceptually since 1940. Further gains in understanding advice came from analyzing its relationship with environmental uncertainty.

Findings

Researchers have studied advice in the context of human-human, machine-machine and information and communication technology-intermediated interactions. Advice has been conceptualized and categorized in many different ways. Over time, conceptualizations of advice have broadened and become more general. In this light, it is theorized that advice is as an information object targeted at an unmade decision. This conceptualization of advice permits situated and momentary advice documents. A newly developed content-based framework of advice leads to an advice typology with four content-based categories of best possible advice: correct answers, probabilities, possibilities, and acknowledgments of the unknown.

Research limitations/implications

The refined advice theory, content-based advice framework and related typology of advice contributed here are small steps toward improved clarity about the nature of advice. These findings are limited in their focus to advice theory and advice categorization.

Practical implications

Scholars, practitioners and information system developers may reconsider advice theory and make use of the content-based framework and related advice typology in their work. These contributions will help advice-givers and the developers of advice-giving information systems and advice networks to provide better advice.

Originality/value

This paper fills a need for a clear and straightforward overall conceptualization of advice that accounts for advice documents and is informed by how advice has been previously conceptualized in multiple scientific fields.

Abstract

Some necessary and sufficient conditions allowing a previously unknown space to be explored through scanning operators are reexamined with respect to measure theory. Some generalized concepts of distances and dimensionality evaluation are proposed, together with their conditions of validity and range of application to topological spaces. The existence of a Boolean lattice with fractal properties originating from non‐wellfounded properties of the empty set is demonstrated. This lattice provides a substratum with both discrete and continuous properties from which existence of physical universes can be proved, up to the function of conscious perception. Space‐time emerges as an ordered sequence of mappings of closed 3D Poincaré sections of a topological four‐space provided by the lattice, and the function of conscious perception is founded on the same properties. Self‐evaluation of a system is possible against indecidability barriers through anticipatory mental imaging occurring in biological brain systems; then our embedding universe should be in principle accessible to knowledge. The possibility of existence of spaces with fuzzy dimension or with adjoined parts with decreasing dimensions is raised, together with possible tools for their study. The work presented here provides the introductory foundations supporting a new theory of space whose physical predictions (suppressing the opposition of quantum and relativistic approaches) and experimental proofs are presented in detail in Parts 2 and 3 of the study.

Societal grand challenges have moved from a marginal concern to a mainstream issue within organization and management theory. How diverse forms of organizing help tackle – or reinforce – grand challenges has become centrally important. In this introductory paper, we take stock of the contributions to the volume on Organizing for Societal Grand Challenges and identify three characteristics of grand challenges that require further scholarly attention: their interconnectedness, fluidity, and paradoxical nature. We also emphasize the need to expand our methodological repertoire and reflect upon our practices as a scholarly community.
