Abstract

This chapter presents the broad themes of this special issue by introducing the contributions and connections among the chapters in the volume. Recent theoretical constructions of childhood have positioned children as social actors resulting in a growth of child- and youth-centered empirical research. Yet, there is a continued importance for researchers to discuss ethical issues that arise in research with youth, contend with the competing constructions of children as social agents and in need of protection, and explore innovative methodological strategies used in research with youth.

Abstract

All school staff (teaching and support) now have a duty and obligation to protect and safeguard children in their care. To be able to do this, school staff need to understand what safeguarding is and how to respond, but also need to understand a number of other concepts such as: why children end up in vulnerable situation in the first place, how teaching practices reduce vulnerability, and how to engage with children and young people in an effective and efficient manner. This chapter explores these latter types of concerns and in doing so identifies that teachers and support staff are key professionals in identifying vulnerability, preventing the escalation of concerns, engaging with children and supporting them and their education over time as they engage with and attend school. This chapter also contains a detailed breakdown of the structure and the content of this edited collection and concludes with reflective comments about the implications of this collection for you as an individual and in your career: working with children and young people in educational establishments.

Abstract

The crime of genocide, which caused terrible losses to humanity throughout history, was legally defined with the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide after the World War II. The actions of killing children in a certain group, harming them both physically and mentally or transferring children to other groups can be counted as the elements of genocide. In this respect, children who are subject of the physical acts of genocide come to the fore when considering the conditions of children in the framework of genocide. However, children affected by the acts of genocide are not limited with this category. This study aims to show the extent of the effects of genocide on children and focuses on four categories of children who are victims of genocide cases. The first of these is the children who were directly subjected to acts of genocide, the second is the juvenile pushed to crime during the acts of genocide, the third is the children who witnessed the genocide and the fourth is the children who are born after sexual violence during the genocide.

Abstract

A healthy society consists of physically, mentally and psychologically healthy individuals. In this respect, it is crucial to raise children as healthy individuals in every sense. Children's rights can be defined as the rights stipulating to protect our children from harm and abuse; give them a chance to be raised as emotionally healthy individuals and provide their basic needs such as nutrition and shelter. The child should have the right to adequate nutrition and a safe haven. In this context, it should be a primary goal for everyone to enable children, who are the future of society, to benefit from their physical environments as equally as possible.

Abstract

Parents are children's first line of protection. However, millions of children all over the world experience a lack of parental care. The reasons for this separation are varied, such as poverty, being abused and neglected, the death of parents, being abandoned, trafficking, migration, living on the street, being displaced or health issues. From the child's rights perspective, parental care is a priority for a child's best interest. In this respect, most countries have social protection policies to support families with their children. When parental care is not possible, states generally take responsibility by providing appropriate services, including residential care, kinship care, foster care, other forms of family-based care or adoption. Within this framework, this study aims to provide an overview of the world's children who lack parental care in the light of the theoretical background and the latest research.

Abstract

The presence of child labour in the world and Turkey is an undeniable social fact. There are various regulations regarding the protection of children both in international documents and in our national legislation. However, in the context of the street economy, some legal regulations, especially the occupational health and safety of children working on the street, remain incapable in terms of implementation. In this study, child labour regulations of various international organisations, including the International Labor Organization relating to child labour will be examined first, and then the existing regulations on child labour in Turkey in our working legislation will be analysed and explained. A number of actions that children working on the street who are street vendors tend to take, such as shining shoes, selling handkerchiefs, and begging, will be discussed in detail and the legal dimension will be examined. In addition, some legal changes will be addressed, such as the lack of a uniform regulation on the minimum working age and the confusion of child labour and child labour concepts. Finally, in the pandemic process that affects the whole world, the measures that are thought to be useful in terms of protecting children working on the street from the COVID-19 epidemic will be tried to be explained in the context of occupational health and safety law.

Abstract

When celebrating with newly-weds on their wedding day, many would imagine the best way to enjoy the day at its best would be to invite and include all members of the family, including the youngest. However, unlike adult guests who will usually happily enjoy the food and drink offered alongside any entertainment, children can be trickier to keep safe and happy all day long as their boredom threshold may well be lower than their adult counterparts and their needs more complex. There has long been a difficult debate over whether children bring unwanted stress to wedding plans or actually enhance the fun and celebration wished for. This chapter discusses all sides of an emotive argument of whether children should be invited to weddings and wedding receptions and how we might ensure their presence is enjoyable for all including the young person themselves.

Abstract

This chapter focusses on the lack of research about fathers raising autistic children. It begins by presenting the results in the Braunstein, Peniston, Perelman, and Cassano (2013) study, which showed that there is not much research about fathers raising autistic children compared to mothers raising autistic children. Some of the key issues in research about these fathers, such as paternal experiences of raising an autistic child, are then presented. Several areas where more research can be conducted in the future are then outlined. These suggestions are based on the limitations in the examined studies and consequently what types of research could be conducted to address these limitations. Addressing such gaps can only occur if there are strategies that can be used to recruit fathers into autism research. To this end, some of the main recommendations in Davison et al.'s study about how to recruit fathers into studies are presented.

The original contribution that this chapter makes to the field of autism spectrum research is to explain areas where there is a lack of research about fathers raising autistic children as well as potential strategies that can be used to stimulate their interest in participating in such research.

Abstract

All school staff need to have a critical self-understanding of how their perceptions of children, childhood and risk inform their practice when they are engaging with children and reflecting on factors linked to safeguarding. This chapter begins by discussing and briefly revisiting the duties and obligations that all staff have in relation to safeguarding children in educational settings. It then goes onto discuss the concept of teachers as ‘significant non parental adults’ (Rishel, Sales, & Koeske, 2005) and explores some of the finer details of why teachers and teaching staff are key players in relation to identifying risks, preventing harms whilst dealing with safeguarding concerns. We conclude this chapter by illustrating and arguing that teachers are key players identifying the needs of children and also have the potential to influence positive behaviour change in them. We also set a context for the remainder of this section: understanding the nature of concerns and risk by outlining the contribution each of the remaining individual chapters has to bring to this collection.
