Abstract

Purpose: Sustainable functionality development (FD) is decisive to firm's profitability in their new innovation in a competitive market. While functionality instills attractive values in innovative goods leading to a dramatic increase in profit through increasing demand and higher prices, it obsolesces immediately in a competitive market. Therefore, how to maintain sustainable FD trajectory is decisive to firm survival strategy within the context of mega‐competition in a globalizing economy. Notwithstanding an increasing significance of this subject, dynamism enabling a sustainable FD trajectory still remains inside a black box. The purpose of this paper, on the basis of an empirical comparative analysis of the diffusion trajectories for copying machines developed by Canon and Ricoh, is to attempt to elucidate this dynamism. Design/methodology/approach: This paper employed a bi‐logistic growth model utilizing patent data for copying machine technologies. Findings: It was found that early undertaking of 2nd generational copying machinery initiated by Canon played a more decisive role in terms of its higher level of sustainable FD than with its competitor. Originality/value: This paper provides significant insight to firm's management of technology strategy in a competitive market.

Abstract

Canons have been of interest to librarians dating back to the days when Robert Maynard Hutchins instituted the Great Books program at the University of Chicago. Hutchins did so at the suggestion of the popular philosopher, Mortimer Adler. When Adler later helped to popularize the program with the public, public libraries around the country became the sites for meetings of Great Books discussion groups.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe how rapid e‐learning helped imaging‐products manufacturer Canon to train more than 500 sales staff, from various countries, in the key messages and approach they would need to operate successfully at the world's biggest media and print fair.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper explains the background to the training, the form it took and the results it achieved.

Findings

The paper reveals that Canon and e‐learning specialist Kineo used a rapid e‐learning approach to deliver three key objectives: an engaging e‐learning design that reflected Canon's values; a fast‐track collaborative development process; and a fast, low‐cost delivery model that tracked progress.

Practical implications

The paper shows that the project involved the development and delivery of an engaging, high‐quality piece of e‐learning in two languages and the development and deployment of a Moodle learning‐management system in three‐and‐a‐half weeks.

Social implications

The paper describes a learning method with a wide range of possible applications in society.

Originality/value

The paper explains how e‐learning can quickly train large numbers of geographically dispersed employees to carry out a specific task with a high degree of competence.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to challenge the practice of having, using and constructing any canon in sociological theory. This paper argues that the elitism of American sociology and the forms of inequality it engenders are sustained by the construction of a canon itself.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts a conceptual approach to examine the problems of research practice, academic writing, inequality and empirical translation that canonical thinking engenders within the academy and beyond.

Findings

Reflecting on the problems outlined, this paper articulates a more democratic agenda for treating canon in research and education by drawing upon standards of practice in ethnography, participatory action research and Southern Theory.

Originality/value

This paper interrogates the relations of domination that remain at work in the discipline and that which concern the elite position of American sociology itself.

Abstract

Purpose

The Peruvian Canon system was designed to collect a percentage of taxed profits from the country's natural resource industries and redistribute these funds into communities that are important to the natural resource extraction process. However, these communities often lack significant basic resources, such as adequate public health facilities and basic medical supplies. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This analysis focusses on the political and economic factors within Peru's Canon distribution system and proposes public policy strategies that could more effectively ensure natural resource profits reach extraction zone communities.

Findings

Policymakers should consider the implementation of policies that require a transparent Canon collection and distribution system. Policies should be developed that mandate an adequate percentage of Canon funds for investment in Peru's public health system.

Research limitations/implications

A significant portion of the available literature on local conditions within natural resource extraction communities and systematic empirical data available are lacking.

Originality/value

This analysis can lead to the development and implementation of public policy that more effectively targets improvements throughout Peru's natural resource communities.

Abstract

Purpose

A virtuous cycle between effective utilization of external resources and functionality development can be constructed. Given that the timely emergence of new functionality in an efficient way is crucial to a firm's competitive strategy in an era of mega‐competition, construction of such a virtuous cycle is a key element with regard to a firm's technopreneurial strategy. The purpose of this paper is to identify a trigger for such a virtuous cycle.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical comparative analysis taking copying machines development trajectories in Canon and Ricoh and the patent data analysis were conducted.

Findings

Cumulative learning from preceding relevant technology development is found to stimulate intra‐technology spillover. Timely intra‐technology spillover from preceding innovation plays a triggering role.

Practical implications

Attempting a broad and comprehensive learning exercise should be strongly encouraged for the effective utilization of external resources for innovation. Fruitful effects of learning should be pursued to the hybrid management of technology fusing indigenous strength and the effects of the comprehensive learning.

Originality/value

Aiming at identifying the trigger emerging a virtuous cycle between effective utilization of external resources and functionality development, core technologies instilled in the copying machines just short of the emergence of functionality development were investigated. In order to anticipate thorough capturing of all dimensions of color technologies utilized for the emergence of new functionality development through indigenous development as well as utilization of externally developed technologies, F‐term retrieval of patent registration data was attempted.

Abstract

Draws on interviews with 76 English professors in 4 US universities to document emerging definitions of multiculturalism and connect them to organizational conditions in each department. Suggests that findings showed that the professors assigned meaning to the ambiguous and contested word, multiculturalism, according to the principles of organizational convenience rather than poligical conviction. Emphasizes the power of institutional routines for withstanding ideological challenges and illuminates the mechanisms through which resistance operates.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper revisits the intellectual roots of grounded theory and aims to analyze the consistency of the method used in grounded theory research in accounting. About 23 papers are identified and analysed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is an analytical review of the research literature. It uses four fundamental canons of grounded theory to analyze accounting research.

Findings

Some accounting researchers who have used the label “grounded theory” for their research have misunderstood or not applied the core canons of grounded theory established by Glaser and Strauss and developed with diversity in other disciplines. Most claim to follow the specific approach of Strauss and Corbin, but the published research shows limited explication of method.

Originality/value

Since Parker and Roffey in 1997, there has been no analysis and re‐evaluation of the burgeoning academic accounting literature using grounded theory. While celebrating the growth of this research, the paper does raise concerns about the lack of consistency of grounded theory research in accounting with the central canons of grounded theory, and it provides some directions for future grounded theory research by encouraging accounting researchers who wish to use grounded theory to engage more strongly in understanding the method and providing transparent explanations of their data collection and analysis methods.

Abstract

The concept of cotermineity leads to conceptual (subject) surrogation that matches the document against the most relevant sector of the classification, and focuses it there as closely as possible. These ideas have as much place in normal (author/title) surrogation, despite the Canons of Ascertainability and of Permanence (Ranganathan). Alphabetical cataloguing is (or can be) as systematic as classified cataloguing, but only if such a principle as coter‐mineity is given sway there. Nominal surrogation is not best distinguished from analytical bibliography by such Canons, since these latter lean too much on transcription and too little on systematization, and since they assume that nominal surrogation deals with books rather than works.
