Abstract

Biometric techniques, such as fingerprint verification, iris or face recognition, retina analysis and hand‐written signature verification, are increasingly becoming basic elements of authentication and identification systems. However, any human physiological or behavioural traits serving as biometric characteristics are personal data protected by privacy protection legislation. To address related issues, this paper examines these classes of biometrics according to data protection principles, purpose, proportionality and security, provided in international legislation. This analysis leads to the desired properties of biometric systems in the form of functional and non‐functional requirements, in order to support developers minimising the risk of being non‐compliant to privacy protection legislation, and to increase user acceptance.

Abstract

In this paper biometric technology will be defined and then discussed as to how it will help the business world protect its information. Background will be given to show how identification and authentication have developed throughout the years and why another form of authorization needs to come to the forefront. There are reasons for higher security and biometric authentication will be shown to be the solution to answer this call. Biometric is a powerful way of deciding who can gain access to our most valuable systems in this volatile world. Factors will be uncovered about what can and will affect an identification system, which will lead us to the feasibility of implementing a biometric system. As one will see, biometric will not be the best choice for everyone. Already, parts of the Department of Defense community rely on this technology in order to maintain the integrity of their own systems. For the business world, it is critical that biometric be grasped now in order to do the same.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to highlight and demonstrate how the study of stress and related responses in construction can best be measured and benchmarked effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

A range of perceptual and physiological measures are obtained across different time periods and during different activities in a fieldwork setting. Differences in the empirical results are analysed and implications for future studies of stress discussed.

Findings

The results of this study strongly support the use of multiple psychometrics and biosensors whenever biometrics are included in the study of stress. Perceptual, physiological and environmental factors are all shown to act in concert to impact stress. Strong conclusions on the potential drivers of stress should then only be considered when consistent results apply across multiple metrics, time periods and activities.

Research limitations/implications

Stress is an incredibly complex condition. This study demonstrates why many current applications of biosensors to study stress in construction are not up to the task and provides empirical evidence on how future studies can be significantly improved.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to focus explicitly on demonstrating the need for multiple research instruments and settings when studying stress or related conditions in construction.

Abstract

The evolution of information technology is likely to result in intimate interdependence between humans and technology. This fusion has been characterized in popular science fiction as chip implantation. It is, however, more likely to take the form of biometric identification using such technologies as fingerprints, hand geometry and retina scanning. Some applications of biometric identification technology are now cost‐effective, reliable and highly accurate. As a result, biometric systems are being developed in many countries for such purposes as social security entitlement, payments, immigration control and election management. Whether or not biometry delivers on its promise of high‐quality identification, it will imperil individual autonomy. Widespread application of the technologies would conflict with contemporary values, and result in a class of outcasts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to unpack some of the socio‐technical relationships inherent in contemporary notions of personal identity management. For this purpose it considers the issue of personal identity management in terms of a framework, which distinguishes between the related processes of authentication, identification and enrolment.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual model described in this paper is reflected against an important recent case in which issues of personal identity management are being enacted: the introduction of a UK national identity card. Both this issue and case are particularly examined in the light of the growth of e‐Government in the UK.

Findings

The paper relates issues associated with the technical infrastructure of e‐Government with some of the costs and benefits associated with the social infrastructure of e‐Government. This device offers a useful framing for a whole range of issues surrounding individual‐organisation interaction in the Information Society that rely on elements of personal identity management.

Research limitations/implications

In the paper the issue of personal identity management is under‐represented in the Information Systems and Information Management literature. The conceptual approach adopted in the paper is used to identify areas of further research in terms of issues relevant to the technical infrastructure of e‐Government.

Practical implications

The paper identifies a number of personal identity management issues embedded in the technical infrastructure required for effective e‐Government.

Originality/value

This paper raises the importance of personal identity management to the success of the e‐Government agenda. It also links classic information management issues to the issue of personal identity management and identifies the challenges for e‐Government within this.

Abstract

Purpose

As new technologies such as immersive and augmented platforms emerge, training approaches are also transforming. The virtual reality (VR) platform provides a completely immersive learning experience for simulated training. Despite increased prevalence of these technologies, the extent literature is lagging behind in terms of evaluating and assessing such innovative training models. The purpose of this paper is to address this gap through exploring the traditional approaches of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods as well as the cutting-edge biometric approach in the evaluation and assessment of the VR-based simulated training and discuss implications for simulated training based on immersive technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

Evaluation and assessment is one of the most critical components of training and development. Inaccurate or ineffective approaches to evaluate and assess training programs not only risk the successful attainment of training goals and outcomes, but they also harm trainees by misleading them about their training performances and experiences. This paper uses a review of existing literature to explore effective approaches for the evaluation and assessment of VR-based simulated training and conceptually discusses new capacities in capturing involuntary trainee reaction toward stimuli, in addition to traditional evaluation and assessment methods.

Findings

Immersive VR-based simulated training is uncharted territory for trainers and human resource development professionals. The findings indicate that existing approaches are still viable options for the evaluation and assessment of this new training technology. However, biometrics presents new frontiers in this arena through its capacity for obtaining trainee emotional responses to stimuli during training, as well as providing a venue free of personal bias and external influences in determining trainee perceptions.

Originality/value

This paper addresses an important gap in the field of training and development by studying the affordances of the latest biometric technology for evaluation and assessment in VR-based simulated training. The existing literature is very limited in its focus on immersive training technologies such as VR in general and evaluation and assessment in particular. The paper presents new insights to both researchers and practitioners in the field of training and development.

Abstract

Purpose

Construction work involves high-risk activities and requires intense focus and physical exertion. Accordingly, working conditions at construction sites contribute to physical fatigue and mental stress in workers, which is the primary cause of accidents. This study aims to examine the relation between construction accidents and physiological variables, indicative of physical fatigue and mental stress.

Design/methodology/approach

Four different real-time physiological values of the construction workers were measured including blood sugar level (BSL), electrodermal activity (EDA), heart rate (HR) and skin temperature (ST). The data were collected from 21 different workers during the summer and winter seasons. Both seasonal and hourly correlation analyses were performed between the construction accidents and the four physiological variables gathered.

Findings

The analysis results demonstrate that BSL values of the workers are correlated inversely with construction accidents taking place before lunch break. In addition, except BSL a significant seasonal association between the physiological variables and construction accidents was found.

Originality/value

It is disclosed that variations in physiological risk factors at certain working periods pose a high risk for construction workers. Therefore, efficient work-cycle rests can be arranged to provide frequent but short breaks for workers to overcome such issues. Besides, an early warning system could be introduced to monitor the real-time physiological values of the workers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine the perception and attitude of consumers toward the presence of cybernetic avatars (CAs) as part of a social inclusion initiative.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed method was used to conduct the study using facial recognition expressions and surveys. Three studies were conducted. Study 1 examines consumers’ attitudes and perceptions of a CA and what it can do to promote social inclusivity among people who have mobility disabilities but wish to work. Study 2 tests a conceptual model to determine the factors that affect consumers’ intention to visit an establishment that uses CAs as their employees. Study 3 extends Study 2 and tests two moderators predicted to influence consumers’ attitudes toward CAs and their intention to visit an establishment that uses CAs.

Findings

The results show that consumers generally accept and are excited about such technological developments. Study 2 further supports this positive perception with its conceptual model. Study 3 provides insights into how the moderating factors influence a consumer’s attitude toward CAs and their intention to visit the establishment. Between consumers who have a mobility disability and those who do not, those who have mobility disabilities showed a more positive attitude and intention to patronize such an establishment.

Originality/value

Studies on CAs are still in the infancy stage. This study provides insight into how society can use technology to promote social inclusion, contrary to prior opposing arguments towards integrating robots into society.
