Abstract

This chapter investigates productivity and cost patterns in the all-cargo US air transport sector. We empirically test the productivity growth influence of changes in unexplained technology, air operations movement characteristics, and factor input prices. Findings show productivity trends depicting negative growth for the 1993–2001 sample, then shifting measurably such that productivity trends depict positive growth for the 2002–2014 sample. The post 2001 growth was fueled by changes in unexplained technological advancements. We interpret this finding as an indication of the importance of technological innovation as a performance enhancer in this transport sector. Findings also reveal a lack of productivity change associated with changes in input prices and movement characteristics. We interpret input price findings as indicating increases in factor input prices such as wages and fuel prices are commensurate with enhanced labor and fuel productivity. The movement characteristic findings are attributable to a lack of sustained increases in load factors, stage length, network size and carrying more volume over the network (density).

Abstract

Existing studies about airline productivity and cost competitiveness are focusing on combination carriers, transporting both passengers and cargo in the same aircraft and with the same inputs. Scientific research about the cost structure and productive performance of all-cargo carriers is very limited. However, the importance of air cargo and express transport in our globalized economy, the high volatility of all-cargo carriers (especially since the 2008 economic crisis), and the success of integrators show the need for more scientific attention to this industry. This chapter aims at benchmarking the productivity and cost competitiveness of US integrated and non-integrated cargo carriers, based on total factor productivity and unit cost competitiveness analyses. The results unveil a positive correlation between productivity on the one hand and the size of the carrier and its average stage length on the other hand, indicating economies of scale. Correcting the results for such factors beyond managerial control and input prices allows us to measure the impact of the crisis and the consequences for the management of the individual carriers.

Supply chains deliver goods and services between shippers and receivers, covering collection, transportation, distribution as well as their handling and storage in between. In particular, transportation services are carried out by different transport modes. In some modern supply chains, different categories of air cargo carriers – combinations, freighter-only, and/or integrators – provide critical transport services.

This chapter develops a methodology for estimating the performance of supply chains served by an air cargo carrier network. The methodology is based on indicators of infrastructure use, technical/technological level, operational factors, economic factors, and environmental performance. This proposed methodology is applied to estimate performance of supply chains served by an integrated air cargo carrier – FedEx Express – operating a single hub in the US domestic air network. Results indicate that the methodology may be useful for estimation of overall supply chain performance under the condition that relevant data are available.

Abstract

One of the most difficult dilemmas facing industry today is the increasing cost of distribution. This is true for both incoming and outgoing supplies. The major trends in the last decade have been: the increase in industrial and consumer purchasing power; rapidly developing technology which has given rise to economies of large‐scale production; and there has been an increasing significance placed upon manufacturing productivity improvements. These trends have resulted in lower production costs; the need for geographically wider markets; and the acquisition of those management skills that are necessary to support such developments. In the last few years certain management emphasis has been placed upon minimising the rapid upward trend in administration and distribution costs. These have often more than offset any cost reduction achieved in production, with the result of a marginal price increase to the final customer. Those fields in which most advances have been made are automatic data processing and machine accounting. But the highest cost increases have often occurred within the physical distribution system. Since international marketing has developed to satisfy the extensive industrial and consumer needs, it is imperative that management realise the impact of distribution costs upon both inputs to the manufacturing process and the final product or services which they offer. The need has, therefore, arisen for senior management to tackle these problems, and air cargo distribution has recently begun to be considered, and will be increasingly important in the future.

Abstract

The increasing growth in global trade is promoting economic diversification through efficient air cargo logistics. The overdependence of Nigeria on mono-product export, mainly crude oil, hinder the successful implementation of economic diversification policy. However, air cargo export plays a significant role in any successful economic diversification policy. Despite the importance of air export of cargo to the economy, literature is scarce on the role of air cargo export in economic diversification studies. This chapter assesses the performance of air cargo export by highlighting its inherent opportunity to support economic diversification in Nigeria. The analysis draws on air cargo export data by volume, types, and airline market share in Nigeria. Regression analysis established a significant relationship between Nigeria's gross domestic product (GDP) and air cargo export. Johansen cointegration test showed that both short and long-run cointegration exists between air cargo and GDP in Nigeria. An increasing trend in Nigeria's air cargo export volume indicates the significance of air cargo export to support economic diversification policy in Nigeria. Airlines market shares have British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, and Saudi Air dominating the exportation of cargo in Nigeria. Agricultural products dominate the air cargo export with 34.6% volume, followed by manufacturing products (23.6%). An all-inclusive policy that promotes international trade for the economic emancipation of Nigeria through diversification into agriculture and manufacturing sectors is necessary.

Abstract

This is the first of a series of three papers discussing a major benchmarking initiative in the air cargo freight industry sector. The project itself focused on nine major competitors in the cargo industry and included organisations known to be leaders in the areas of service excellence. The methodology used for establishing comparisons was an adaptation of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) (1996 version). A questionnaire was used with prompts covering various areas of quality management, people involvement in continuous improvement, service excellence aspects, customer focus and satisfaction aspects and finally business and operational performance aspects. Paper 1 discusses the changes that are taking place in the air cargo freight industry and sets the scene by presenting profiles of all of the competitors used in this study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an objective decision-making framework and conduct a benchmarking study in the air cargo industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The decision-making framework and benchmarking methodology evaluates the aircraft value for money (VfM) as a benefit-to-cost ratio calculated adopting a measure of relative efficiency. This efficiency score is measured as a comprehensive efficiency index obtained by combining several efficiency scores calculated by implementing four data envelopment analysis (DEA) models.

Findings

The framework is used to carry on a benchmarking study in the air cargo industry on a sample of 27 airplanes. The average VfM is 67.04 percent, with measurements between 39.96 and 116.03 percent. Only three airplanes achieve full VfM and behave as benchmarks to the remaining airplanes. Boeing B727-200 is a broad player in the market. Some old cargo models (DC 9-30F) deliver the same amount of VfM as more recent aircraft models (i.e. MD-11F and A300-600F).

Research limitations/implications

The decision-making framework and benchmarking methodology can usefully support managers to make sound decisions and plans. Even though DEA generates attributes weights to different alternatives that are independent of the buyer preferences, the framework flexibility allows introducing a weighting scheme to take into account the managers preferences for certain aircraft performance/functional features. It can easily include new functional/performance measurements and adapt the VfM measurement to the particular economic context, strategy, and business model of the airlines, or be transferred to different industries.

Originality/value

The framework combines technical, functional performance, and economic cost measurements to get a unique efficiency index to evaluate the airplane VfM.
