Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of the paper is to develop model basing on the modified and properly‐adopted Fermi‐Dirac equation which combines proper accuracy with adequate simplicity as well as to show how steady state and transient curves resulting from this model can be applied for solving design task.

Design/methodology/approach

The standard Fermi‐Dirac equation was modified and extended. Full performance cycle for the SMA actuator was characterized by double‐valued function describing the actuator activation and the actuator deactivation. All these functions and parameters can be easily determined by analysis of measurement data or with use of Hooke‐Jeeves optimization algorithm.

Findings

SMA linear actuator can be used in mechatronic systems as a special non‐standard drive when ultra‐light mass and very simple mechanical construction of power feed system is required. The proposed steady‐state and transient performance curves as well as operation diagram constitute sufficient base for effective designing SMA drive systems.

Research limitations/implications

The greatest disadvantage of a SMA actuator is long time of deactivation resulting from slow self‐cooling process. As far as efficiency is concerned as essential factor for choosing the most suitable linear actuator, there is no sense to take into account a linear SMA actuator because of its very low efficiency.

Practical implications

Designer can use performance curve which determines proper length of SMA actuator and range of its motion. The proposed model can be implemented in SMA drive control unit for controlling position of the actuator.

Originality/value

Similarities between change of martensitic phase during transition process and probability P of electron energy level distribution described by the Fermi‐Dirac two‐variable equation were taken into account. Such an approach seems to express in the most suitable way the physical nature of m‐a transition. The authors decided to extend concept (proposed in Jayender et al.) and to adopt the Fermi‐Dirac equation for describing behaviour of a SMA linear actuator.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop lightweight actuators in order to replace conventional hydraulic/pneumatic actuators and to apply the actuation system to a small flying vehicle.

Design/methodology/approach

A new type of control surface using a piezo‐composite actuator for a small flying vehicle has been designed and manufactured. The piezo‐composite actuator is composed of a piezoelectric ceramic layer, a carbon/epoxy layer and glass/epoxy layers. Through this, the miniaturization and weight reduction of the actuation systems for flying vehicle can be achieved. A simple model of the control surface has been manufactured and evaluated through experiments.

Findings

The performance test results showed that the developed actuator can produce stable angle of attack independent of the applied loading. A radio controller for the actuator was developed to control the motions wirelessly. It was found that the piezo‐composite actuator and its integrated controller system have a possibility to be used not only as a small flying vehicle but also as a control surface actuator of a small unmanned flying robot through the miniaturization of power supply and control system.

Originality/value

The paper describes the procedures of designing and manufacturing smart structure application of the piezo‐composite actuator with performance evaluation and comparison method. It is expected that piezo‐composite actuator can be used as a small flying vehicle control surface actuator through the miniaturization of power supply and control system with the use of the integrated radio controller MIPAD.

Abstract

This paper presents an optimal design method of number and placements of piezoelectric patch actuators in active vibration control of a plate. Eigenvalue distribution of energy correlative matrix of control input force is applied to determine optimal number of the required actuators. Genetic algorithms (GAs) using active vibration control effects, which are taken as the objective function, are adopted to search optimal placements of actuators. The results show that disturbance exerted on a plate is a key factor of determining optimal number and placements of actuators in active structural vibration control, and a global and efficient optimization solution of multiple actuator placements can be obtained using GAs.

Abstract

Series elastic actuators provide many benefits in force control of robots in unconstrained environments. These benefits include high force fidelity, extremely low impedance, low friction, and good force control bandwidth. Series elastic actuators employ a novel mechanical design architecture which goes against the common machine design principal of “stiffer is better”. A compliant element is placed between the gear train and driven load to intentionally reduce the stiffness of the actuator. A position sensor measures the deflection, and the force output is accurately calculated using Hooke’s Law (F = Kx). A control loop then servos the actuator to the desired output force. The resulting actuator has inherent shock tolerance, high force fidelity and extremely low impedance. These characteristics are desirable in many applications including legged robots, exoskeletons for human performance amplification, robotic arms, haptic interfaces, and adaptive suspensions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose an improved design of PneuNets bending actuator which aims at obtaining larger deflection with the same magnitude of pressure. The PneuNets bending actuator shows potential application in the morphing trailing edge concept.

Design/methodology/approach

Finite element method is used to investigate the characteristics of the improved design bending actuator. Multiobjective optimal design of the PneuNets bending actuator is proposed based on the Gauss process regression models.

Findings

The maximum deflection is obtained when the height of the beams is smaller than half the height of the chambers. The spacing between chambers (beam length) has little effect on the deflection. Larger spacing could be used to reduce the actuator weight.

Originality/value

With the same pressure magnitude, the deflection of the improved design bending actuator is much larger than that of the baseline configuration. PneuNets bending actuator could increase the continuity of the aerodynamic surface compared to other actuators.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-safe iron-free electrical actuator for MR-guided surgical interventions.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper deals with the design of an MRI compatible electrical actuator. Three-dimensional electromagnetic and thermal analytical models have been developed to design the actuator. These models have been validated through 3D finite element (FE) computations. The analytical models have been inserted in an optimization procedure that uses genetic algorithms to find the optimal parameters of the actuator.

Findings

The analytical models are very fast and precise compared to the FE models. The computation time is 0.1 s for the electromagnetic analytical model and 3 min for the FE one. The optimized actuator does not perturb imaging sequence even if supplied with a current 10 times higher than its rated one. Indeed, the actuator’s magnetic field generated in the imaging area does not exceed 1 ppm of the B0 field generated by the MRI scanner. The actuator can perform up to 25 biopsy cycles without any risk to the actuator or the patient since he maximum temperature rise of the actuator is about 20°C. The actuator is compact and lightweight compared to its pneumatic counterpart.

Originality/value

The MRI compatible actuator uses the B0 field generated by scanner as inductor. The design procedure uses magneto-thermal coupled models that can be adapted to the design of a variety actuation systems working in MRI environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Soft actuators using pneumatic-chamber (PneuNet)-based designs have been of interest in the area of soft robotics with scope of application in the area of biomedical assistance and smart agriculture. Researchers have attempted to investigate multiple chambers in parallel to examine their deformation characteristics. However, there is a lacuna for investigation of the deformation characteristics of four parallel chambered soft actuators. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively investigate the different possible actuation scenarios and the resulting bending/deformation behaviours.

Design/methodology/approach

Therefore, in this study, a four-chambered PneuNet actuator is numerically investigated to evaluate the effects of pressurization scenarios and pressure levels on its performance, operating reaching and working volume.

Findings

The results of this study revealed that two-adjacent chamber equal pressurization and three-chamber pressurizations result in increased bending. However, two-opposite chamber pressurization reduces the bending angle with pressure levels in the lower pressure chamber. The maximum bending angle of 97° was achieved for single-chamber pressurization of 300 kPa. The two-adjacent chamber unequal pressurization can achieve a sweeping motion in the actuator along with bending. The working volume and reaching capability analysis revealed that the actuator can reach around 71% of the dimensional operating space.

Practical implications

The results provide fundamental guidance on the output nature of motion which can be obtained under different pressurization scenarios using the four-chambered design soft actuator, thereby making it a practical guide for implementation for useful applications.

Originality/value

The comprehensive pressurization scenarios and pressure level variations reported in this study will serve as fundamental operating guidelines for any practical implementation of the four-chambered PneuNet actuator.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to present an innovation-based new actuator/surface fault detection and isolation (FDI) method, which is sensitive to the changes in the innovation mean of the Kalman filter (KF) and the KF tuning method for the case of actuator/surface failure.

Design/methodology/approach

The multiple system noise scale factors (MSNSFs) are used in this method as the monitoring statistics. MSNSFs are determined to make it possible to perform the actuator/surface FDI operations simultaneously.

Findings

The introduced FDI algorithm can detect and isolate the loss of effectiveness type actuator/surface faults in real time. The proposed KF tuning method works effectively against actuator/surface fault. The actuator/surface fault detection, isolation and filter tuning are achieved by just using a simple modification over the conventional KF.

Originality/value

The MSNSF-based actuator/surface fault detection, isolation and filter tuning algorithms are investigated together for the first time. The actuator/surface FDI operations are performed simultaneously.

Findings

The soft robot’s ability to adapt to the environment and cross obstacles has been demonstrated by building prototypes and complex environments such as grass, gravel, sand and pipes.

Originality/value

This design can improve the speed and smoothness of the motion of the soft robot, while retaining the good environmental flexibility of the soft robot. And the soft robot has good environmental adaptability and the ability to cross obstacles. The soft robot proposed in this paper has broad prospects in fields such as pipeline inspection and field exploration.
