Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at providing the evidence about how carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems could contribute to the decrease of atmospheric CO2 rates through the adoption of appropriate cropping systems such as agroforestry.

Design/methodology/approach

Stratified randomly selected plots were used to collect data on tree diameter at breast height (DBH). Composite soil samples were collected from three soil depths for soil carbon analysis. Above ground biomass estimation was made using an allometric equation. The spectral signature of each plot was extracted to study the statistical relationship between carbon stock and selected vegetation indices.

Findings

There was a significant difference in vegetation and soil carbon stocks among the different land use/land cover types (P < 0.05). The potential carbon stock was highest in the vegetation found in sparsely cultivated land (13.13 ± 1.84 tons ha−1) and in soil in bushland (19.21 ± 3.79 tons ha−1). Carbon sequestration potential of the study area significantly increased (+127174.5 tons CO2e) as a result of conversion of intensively cultivated agricultural lands to agroforestry systems. The amount of sequestered carbon was found to be dependent on species diversity, tree density and tree size. The vegetation indices had a better correlation with soil and total carbon.

Originality/value

The paper has addressed an important aspect in curbing greenhouse gases in integrated land systems. The paper brings a new empirical insight of carbon sequestration potentials of agroforestry systems with a focus on drylands.

Abstract

The main role of the gears is to ensure smoothness and noiseless service, required power transmission, precision of processing, necessary degree of efficiency and so on. Lubrication is of significant importance to the protection of gears from tribological processes which cause failure of gears. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of lubricating oils on the reliability of gears. The experimental investigation of the influence of some industrial oils on the tribological behaviour of gears of machine tools has been carried out at a metalworking factory. The paper presents the following: the classification of industrial oils for gears; the flow‐chart of the choice of the industrial oil for gears; the analysis of the symptoms and the causes of failure to gears; the reliability curves of gears in the function of tribological properties of lubricating oils under the operating conditions of investigation here presented. The reliability of gears was found to be affected by both the type of lubricating oil and the viscosity grade.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to reconstruct the frictional vibration signal from noise and characterize the running-in process by frictional vibration.

Design/methodology/approach

There is a strong correlation between tangential frictional vibration and normal frictional vibration. On this basis, a new frictional vibration reconstruction method combining cross-correlation analysis with ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) was proposed. Moreover, the concept of information entropy of friction vibration is introduced to characterize the running-in process.

Findings

Compared with the wavelet packet method, the tangential friction vibration and the normal friction vibration reconstructed by the method presented in this paper have a stronger correlation. More importantly, during the running-in process, the information entropy of friction vibration gradually decreases until the equilibrium point is reached, which is the same as the changing trend of friction coefficient, indicating that the information entropy of friction vibration can be used to characterize the running-in process.

Practical implications

The study reveals that the application EEMD method is an appropriate approach to reconstruct frictional vibration and the information entropy of friction vibration represents the running-in process. Based on these results, a condition monitoring system can be established to automatically evaluate the running-in state of mechanical parts.

Originality/value

The EEMD method was applied to reconstruct the frictional vibration. Furthermore, the information entropy of friction vibration was used to analysis the running-in process.
