Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the first National Technology Roadmap (NTRM) of China, compiled by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2007, in accordance with the analytical framework of “national needs‐strategic tasks‐key technologies‐development priorities,” and to comment upon its progress.

Design/methodology/approach

The technology foresight in 2003‐2006 was organized by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. Based on two large rounds of Delphi investigations involving 1,400 experts and a SWOT analysis of every candidate technology, the key technologies were selected and the characteristics of them acquired. A large number of panels were organized to discuss and affirm the national needs and strategic tasks, so the logic relationships among the key items of NTRM could be clarified.

Findings

Five national needs, 30 strategic tasks, and 90 key technologies were promoted, and their relationships constructed. The characteristics of all the 90 technologies, including their R&D basis, gap between their level and the levels of advanced countries, and the possible time needed to realize these technologies were evaluated. The NTRM of China was successfully formulated.

Research limitations/implications

Only nine technology fields were considered in the Delphi investigations, because of the limited study conditions. This might become the limitation to the application of this NTRM. In further study, more technology fields should be involved and all the processes finished as soon as possible.

Social implications

The results of the NTRM were partly adopted by the 11th science and technology plan of China. Through the progress of NTRM, agreements concerning the key technologies and their development roadmaps were made. Both the NTRM and its compiling process provide important reference points for scientific and technological managers, scientists, and entrepreneurs, because they will help to make better decisions and contribute greatly to the research and development of the technologies.

Originality/value

This is the first attempt in China to make a NTRM. Results from the large‐scale Delphi investigations were taken as the basis for the roadmapping. The model of “national needs‐strategic tasks‐key technologies‐development priorities” was promoted and the technology roadmapping at a national level was conducted successfully.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to offers a new method for assessing geoeconomic risks in bilateral relations and evaluate the level of such risks from Vietnam’s economic dependency on China.

Design/methodology/approach

I apply descriptive analysis to identify asymmetrical dependency in Vietnam–China economic relations and propose a geoeconomic risk assessment framework to evaluate risk levels in bilateral economic linkages.

Findings

The proposed geoeconomic risk framework assesses risk levels, which are positively influenced by the degree of asymmetrical relations (vulnerabilities), the net impacts on the receiving economy (impacts) and the sending state’s ability to control economic tools (threats). In contrast, risk levels are negatively affected by the effectiveness of existing mitigation efforts. The framework employs ordinal likelihood scales to rank various risk levels. In the context of Vietnam–China relations, market access for agricultural products and control of the Mekong water emerge as the most risky areas for economic coercion, followed by Chinese official development finance in infrastructure and critical input imports. On the other hand, debt dependency and foreign direct investment in the energy sector are considered more secure areas—less likely targets for economic coercion. Hence, risk mitigation strategies should prioritize reducing asymmetry in vulnerable dependence areas while maintaining current practices in more secure areas.

Originality/value

Methodologically, it introduces a new approach for assessing bilateral geoeconomic risk. Empirically, it provides Vietnam’s policymakers with a comprehensive evaluation of the implications of economic interdependence with China.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the connection between travel content consumption in social networks and social comparison, envy as well as travel intention. It analyzes whether tourists’ travel intention is affected by travel content consumption in social networks, and more importantly, whether social comparison and envy play a mediating role in this process.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected through intercept in four popular tourist spots in Guangzhou and Zhuhai in South China. A self-administered questionnaire was used. A total of 400 participants were recruited, and 291 valid questionnaires were obtained. Bias-corrected nonparametric percentile bootstrap mediation variable test method was used to test hypotheses.

Findings

The study yielded three results. First, travel content consumption in the social networks positively influences travel intention. Second, travel content consumption in social networks indirectly affects travel intention through social comparison and envy. Third, the control variables, such as gender, age, education and income, mainly affect envy.

Originality/value

This study constructs a theoretical framework of stimulus–cognitive appraisal–emotion–behavioral responses. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first study to reveal that the internal psychological mechanism of travel content consumption affects travel intention. It also discloses that envy of seemingly negative emotions can encourage positive behaviors in certain situations.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on Schumpeter’s theory of innovation and stereotype content model, this study aims to arrive at an integrated model that relates destination innovation type, destination innovativeness and revisit intention to uncover more about the drivers and outcomes of destination innovativeness from a consumer-centric perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Three studies, including content analysis of news media, an onsite survey and an online survey in Chinese special featured towns, were conducted.

Findings

This study develops a consumer-centric destination innovation measure. The results reveal that input innovation and product innovation positively influence revisit intention through the serial mediation of destination innovativeness and perceived competence.

Research limitations/implications

As the data was collected from tourists in China, any generalization of the results to other regions should be made with caution; accordingly, replication is needed to test the proposed model in different cultural contexts. Second, during the onsite data collection period, special featured town destinations were still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have affected the perceptions of tourists. Third, the second round of data was collected using an online survey, which may have introduced bias due to a potential lack of representativeness. Fourth, some potential missing variables could also influence the links among innovation, destination innovativeness and revisit intention.

Originality/value

This study presents the first empirical test of the impact of innovation type and innovativeness on tourists’ response to tourism destinations. The results of this study could guide destinations to deliver more effective consumer-centric innovations to generate competitiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

For the basic problems on platform innovation, such as platform innovation connotation and characteristics, the driving mechanism and the influence mechanism are less been studied. This study aims to explore how to achieve platform innovation in traditional service enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the theory of enterprise network and binary learning, respectively, this paper discusses the behavior of binary learning based on network structure and network impact on efficiency and innovative platform innovation, and analyzed the realization of the platform innovation path.

Findings

The research draws the following conclusions: the network structure-based exploitative learning can promote the efficiency platform innovation, while the network behavior-based exploratory learning can promote the novelty platform innovation. The interaction between network structure and network behavior embedded in traditional services is more conducive to exploratory learning so as to promote novelty platform innovation, and the platform innovation of traditional service enterprises is a process from efficiency-oriented to novelty-oriented. The innovation effect generated by exploratory learning based on network behavior is much higher than that generated by exploitative learning based on network structure. The theoretical contributions of this study are as follows: first, this study compares the similarities and differences between service innovation of platform-oriented enterprises and platform innovation of service enterprises. On this basis, it clearly defines the concept of platform innovation and divides it into two categories: efficiency platform innovation and novelty platform innovation. Second, it reveals the two paths for traditional service enterprises to realize platform innovation, and the interaction between these two paths are also explored, which promotes the scenario-based and dynamic study of platform innovation in traditional service enterprise. The conclusion of this study provides theoretical reference for traditional service enterprises to carry out platform innovation.

Originality/value

Theoretical contribution of this paper lies in: first, the concept of platform innovation is clearly defined. Current research about platform innovation is mainly around the innovation of platform enterprise and the platform innovation of traditional enterprise, but there is no document that makes clear distinction; some literature even equates innovation of platform enterprise with platform innovation of traditional enterprise. In this paper, through a detailed literature review and analysis, clearly define the concept of platform innovation and divided into efficiency platform innovation and novel platform innovation, which has made theoretical contribution to the depth of the research. Second, expand the platform innovation research of traditional service industry. In recent years, the platform innovation research of traditional enterprise has become a hot spot, but they focus on the attention of the platform transformation of traditional manufacturing industry, such as Haier; the traditional service industries seem to be “empty,” but, in fact, the traditional service industry platform innovation is of great significance and more worth looking forward to. In this paper, the longitudinal case studies can promote academic concerns focus on the traditional service industry, and also provides the theory instruction practice. Third, it promotes the platform innovation research of traditional enterprise and dynamic analysis. Based on the theory of enterprise network and binary learning, respectively, it discusses the behavior of binary learning based on network structure and network impact on efficiency and innovative platform innovation, and analyzed the realization of the platform innovation path. On the one hand, it enriches the research type of platform innovation; on the other hand, the dynamic evolution mechanism of platform innovation research can make up for the deficiency of the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compare the forecasting performance of different models with and without big data predictors from search engines and social media.

Design/methodology/approach

Using daily tourist arrival data to Mount Longhu, China in 2018 and 2019, the authors estimated ARMA, ARMAX, Markov-switching auto-regression (MSAR), lasso model, elastic net model and post-lasso and post-elastic net models to conduct one- to seven-days-ahead forecasting. Search engine data and social media data from WeChat, Douyin and Weibo were incorporated to improve forecasting accuracy.

Findings

Results show that search engine data can substantially reduce forecasting error, whereas social media data has very limited value. Compared to the ARMAX/MSAR model without big data predictors, the corresponding post-lasso model reduced forecasting error by 39.29% based on mean square percentage error, 33.95% based on root mean square percentage error, 46.96% based on root mean squared error and 45.67% based on mean absolute scaled error.

Practical implications

Results highlight the importance of incorporating big data predictors into daily demand forecasting for tourism attractions.

Originality/value

This study represents a pioneering attempt to apply the regularized regression (e.g. lasso model and elastic net) in tourism forecasting and to explore various daily big data indicators across platforms as predictors.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous studies have focused on exploring the factors that influence employees' two distinct types of creativity, that is, radical and incremental creativity, while very little attention has been paid to the outcomes of creativity and how the two types of creativity interact within individuals.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study addresses this issue by adopting both variable-centered (correlation) and person-centered (latent profile analysis) approaches for three samples of supervisor–employee dyads data from China (n = 159, 213 and 273).

Findings

Using variable-centered analysis in sample 1, general creativity was positively associated with the four work performance dimensions, while there was no significant correlation between creativity and well-being. Using person-centered analysis, five very similar creativity profiles were found across samples 2 and 3 based on employees' radical and incremental creativity. These five classes differed in work performance dimensions and well-being, with classes characterized by a high level of incremental creativity profiles reporting a higher level of well-being and classes characterized by a high level of both incremental and radical creativity profiles reporting a higher level of the four work performance dimensions.

Practical implications

Managers are suggested to focus on factors that could promote employees' incremental creativity if they want to have happier and highly performing employees, and they could also focus on factors that could aid employees who may experience costs when engaging in radical creative activities.

Originality/value

The results of the present study contribute to uncover the potential outcomes related to employees' creativity by identifying distinct profiles of creativity types.

Abstract

Purpose

With the appearance of additional review functionality on e-commerce platforms emotional changes in composite reviews have become more diverse. How consumers process the emotional changes in composite reviews is an important concern for companies. This study investigates the impact of explores how changes in the emotional valence and emotional intensity of composite reviews on consumers' information adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on emotion as social information theory, this study constructs a double mediation model of how the change in emotional valence of composite reviews affects consumers' adoption intention and examines the moderating effect of the dynamic change of emotional intensity. One field and three online experiments were conducted to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

Consumers were more likely to adopt positive–negative composite reviews than negative–positive composite reviews. Compared to negative–positive composite reviews, positive–negative composite reviews led to higher perceived empathy and lower motivational suspicion, which, in turn, led to higher information adoption. Moreover, dynamic changes in emotional intensity played a moderating role in this effect. Interestingly, the amount of attribute difference changed the differences in perceived empathy and motivated consumer suspicion generated by the composite review when considering the reviewer’s attribute difference description.

Originality/value

The findings have important theoretical contributions that deepen business and consumer understanding of the impact of composite reviews and have practical implications for improving the management of composite reviews by businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

Protean career orientation is a key element that helps explain why workers plan and manage their careers. In the field of nursing, a protean career orientation assists nurses in job search, career mobility and adapting to changing demands. Few studies have explored how nurses’ protean career orientation will lead to job search and how to make better use of the protean career orientation. This study aims to explore how a protean career orientation influences job search via career optimism and the moderating role of mentoring relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted a cross-sectional survey of 309 frontline nurses from China. The questionnaire was distributed to nurses through the snowball sampling method. Jamovi 1.2.2 was used for descriptive analysis and Pearson’s correlation analysis. The relationships between the variables and their significance were tested using Process Macro 3.3.

Findings

Results show that protean career orientation was significantly related to career optimism and positively related to job search. Career optimism was significantly related to job search. The indirect effect of protean career orientation on job search through career optimism was significant. The interaction between protean career orientation and mentoring relationships was also significantly related to career optimism.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate how nurses’ flexible career orientation significantly impacted job search through nurses’ career optimism. If nurses work in supportive mentoring relationships, the positive effect of the nurse’s protean career orientation on the job search is decreased.
