Abstract

Examines alternate segmentation strategies in the standard industrial products market. Using data obtained from 164 Indian industrial buyers, provides several empirical tests of a widely held belief that traditional segmentation approaches may serve as effective surrogate measures for distinct benefit segments. Results suggest that the link between traditional and benefit segmentation approaches are far weaker than might be expected. There is no strong empirical evidence supporting the proposition that benefit segments derived from cluster analysis are dependent on sales volume, industry type, characteristics of purchasing agents, and other potential correlates of benefit segments. The findings have implications for both academics and practitioners in industrial marketing.

Abstract

Attempts to highlight differences among market segments of dental care customers in terms of the various attributes that determine which dental practitioner they patronize. The market segments are defined based on usage rate. Data were collected from a nationwide sample of 460 consumers in the USA. Using a determinant attribute approach, eight attributes were first isolated from the total set of 18 dental service attributes considered. Finds these eight attributes to be determinant factors in consumer choice of a general dental practitioner. They included quality of service, professional competence, reputation, personality and attitude of dentist, attitude of support personnel, waiting time before treatment, availability of emergency services, and fee charged for services. Multiple discriminant analysis was then performed to find out which determinant attributes are relevant for each of the three usage segments. Indicates that the three market segments differ in terms of the determinant attributes considered while patronizing a general dental practitioner. These findings have significant managerial implications for dental practitioners.

Abstract

This paper compares the shopping behavior of Chilean consumers with those in China. Both Chinese and Chilean mall visits are driven, first and foremost, by purchase; however, consumers in Chile tend to be less single minded than their Chinese counterparts. Differences also exist between the two populations in their way of selecting the mall, shopping characteristics, and purchase patterns. Most importantly, Chinese shoppers relied more on their mall visits than Chileans in searching for information and finalizing their purchase decisions; at the same time, they were much more cautious in committing themselves to a purchase.

Abstract

Purpose

Global climate change characterized by an increase in temperature has become the focus of attention all over the world. China is a sensitive and significant area of global climate change. This paper specifically aims to examine the association between agricultural productivity and the climate change by using China’s provincial agricultural input–output data from 2000 to 2019 and the climatic data of the ground meteorological stations.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used the three-stage spatial Durbin model (SDM) model and entropy method for analysis of collected data; further, the authors also empirically tested the climate change marginal effect on agricultural productivity by using ordinary least square and SDM approaches.

Findings

The results revealed that climate change has a significant negative effect on agricultural productivity, which showed significance in robustness tests, including index replacement, quantile regression and tail reduction. The results of this study also indicated that by subdividing the climatic factors, annual precipitation had no significant impact on the growth of agricultural productivity; further, other climatic variables, including wind speed and temperature, had a substantial adverse effect on agricultural productivity. The heterogeneity test showed that climatic changes ominously hinder agricultural productivity growth only in the western region of China, and in the eastern and central regions, climate change had no effect.

Practical implications

The findings of this study highlight the importance of various social connections of farm households in designing policies to improve their responses to climate change and expand land productivity in different regions. The study also provides a hypothetical approach to prioritize developing regions that need proper attention to improve crop productivity.

Originality/value

The paper explores the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity by using the climatic data of China. Empirical evidence previously missing in the body of knowledge will support governments and researchers to establish a mechanism to improve climate change mitigation tools in China.

Abstract

Purpose

The research in this paper helps to understand the difference between the Eulerian method and the Lagrangian method in describing the performance of Pelton turbine buckets, so as to improve the design level and design efficiency of the runner.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used DualSPHysics to calculate the unsteady flow of the Pelton turbine runner bucket and compared it with the mesh-based method to explore the difference between mesh-based and particle-based methods in torque curves, jet flow patterns and pressure characteristics.

Findings

It is noted that the particle-based method is challenging to compare with the mesh-based method concerning accuracy. In addition to better describing the free water film, the particle method also captures many droplets near the water film, but it cannot well describe the negative pressure region on the bucket back and the resulting jet interference after cutting off the jet. Compared with the mesh-based method, the pressure measurement points obtained by the particle-based method generally have shorter periods and violent fluctuations, and the pressure value of some points is underestimated.

Originality/value

This paper helped to calculate the unsteady characteristics of the Pelton turbine by Fluent, CFX and DualSPHysics; exploration jet flow pattern differences between the mesh and meshfree methods; prediction of the flow interference between the bucket back and the jet and the pressure curve of SPH usually has a shorter period and violent fluctuations.
