Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find an efficient way by using finite volume method (FVM) to simulate the aluminum alloy profile extrusion processes.

Design/methodology/approach

By assuming isotropic conditions, the hot aluminum material is described as a non‐linear Newtonian fluid material. Semi‐implicit method for pressure‐linked equations algorithm is used to calculate the physical fields, and the dynamic viscosity is updated then. Volume of fluid method and moving grid method are also used for unsteady flow to catch the free surface of the material and the moving bound.

Findings

FVM model in this paper is an accurate and efficient method for the numerical simulation of aluminum profile extrusion processes. Compared with finite element method software, FVM model is both memory and CPU efficient.

Practical implications

Provide theoretical reference for sound extrusion process and die designs, which are the key factors to produce desirable products in industrial production.

Originality/value

The paper finds an efficient way to introduce the FVM in computational fluid dynamics field into the simulation of the steady and unsteady aluminum alloy profile extrusion processes. It provides a reference for people who are interested in FVM and extrusion processes.

Abstract

In recent years, rapid prototyping (RP) and rapid tooling (RT) technologies have been implemented in many aspects of industry, especially in the area of new product development. Based on RP and RT technologies, the paper proposes a rapid design and manufacturing system of the product. There are two ways to develop a new product in this system. One is beginning with a design concept, and another is from a sample as a reference. The reverse engineering technology, transmission processing software or modules of the input data, structure analysis and optimization means and manufacturing process analysis tools were integrated in the system. Some examples show that the integrated system not only can reduce the number of design iterations but also improve the efficiency and reliability of the product design.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to use the finite volume method widely used in computational fluid dynamics to avoid the serious remeshing and mesh distortion during aluminium profile extrusion processes simulation when using the finite element method. Block-structured grids are used to fit the complex domain of the extrusion. A finite volume method (FVM) model for aluminium extrusion numerical simulation using non-orthogonal structured grids was established.

Design/methodology/approach

The influences of the elements ' nonorthogonality on the governing equations discretization of the metal flow in aluminium extrusion processes were fully considered to ensure the simulation accuracy. Volume-of-fluid (VOF) scheme was used to catch the free surface of the unsteady flow. Rigid slip boundary condition was applied on non-orthogonal grids.

Findings

This paper involved a simulation of a typical aluminium extrusion process by the FVM scheme. By comparing the simulation by the FVM model established in this paper with the ones simulated by the finite element method (FEM) software Deform-3D and the corresponding experiments, the correctness and efficiency of the FVM model for aluminium alloy profile extrusion processes in this paper was proved.

Originality/value

This paper uses the FVM widely used in CFD to calculate the aluminium profile extrusion processes avoiding the remeshing and mesh distortion during aluminium profile extrusion processes simulation when using the finite element method. Block-structured grids with the advantage of simple data structure, small storage and high numerical efficiency are used to fit the complex domain of the extrusion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the corporate brand in a brand alliance that includes one of the corporation’s product brands.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a scenario-based study, 899 participants were randomly assigned to one of 84 unique brand alliance scenarios involving a corporate brand, a product brand ally and a focal product brand; a total of 33 corporate brands were represented. Results were estimated using a three-stage least squares model.

Findings

Consumers’ evaluations of a focal brand were enhanced when a corporate brand name associated with a product brand ally was included in the brand alliance. The effect was mediated by attitude toward the product brand ally. The indirect effect of the corporate brand was stronger when consumers had low product category knowledge (PCK).

Research limitations/implications

Consistent with competitive cue theory, the findings suggest that a corporate brand can provide superior, consistent and unique information in a brand alliance.

Practical implications

Practitioners should note that the effectiveness of adding a corporate brand name into a product brand alliance is contingent on the extent of consumers’ PCK.

Originality/value

This paper examines when and why corporate brands are effective endorsers in product brand alliances. This paper adds empirical support to previous assertions that, if managed effectively, corporate brands can be valuable assets that convey unique valuable information to consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

There are many investigations in design methodologies, but there are also divergences and convergences as there are so many points of view. This study aims to evaluate to corroborate and deepen other researchers’ findings, dissipate divergences and provide directing to future work on the subject from a methodological and convergent perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

This study analyzes the previous reviews (about 15 reviews) and based on the consensus and the classifications provided by these authors, a significant sample of research is analyzed in the design for additive manufacturing (DFAM) theme (approximately 80 articles until June of 2017 and approximately 280–300 articles until February of 2019) through descriptive statistics, to corroborate and deepen the findings of other researchers.

Findings

Throughout this work, this paper found statistics indicating that the main areas studied are: multiple objective optimizations, execution of the design, general DFAM and DFAM for functional performance. Among the main conclusions: there is a lack of innovation in the products developed with the methodologies, there is a lack of exhaustivity in the methodologies, there are few efforts to include environmental aspects in the methodologies, many of the methods include economic and cost evaluation, but are not very explicit and broad (sustainability evaluation), it is necessary to consider a greater variety of functions, among other conclusions

Originality/value

The novelty in this study is the methodology. It is very objective, comprehensive and quantitative. The starting point is not the case studies nor the qualitative criteria, but the figures and quantities of methodologies. The main contribution of this review article is to guide future work on the subject from a methodological and convergent perspective and this article provides a broad database with articles containing information on many issues to make decisions: design methodology; optimization; processes, selection of parts and materials; cost and product management; mechanical, electrical and thermal properties; health and environmental impact, etc.
