Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to optimize the interactions of businesses located within industrial clusters (ICs) by using a supply-demand hub in ICs (SDHIC) as a conjoint provider of logistics and depository facilities for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as producers, where all of these interactions are under supervision of a third-party logistics provider (3PL).

Design/methodology/approach

To evaluate the values of SDHIC, three mathematical models are proposed, optimally solved via GAMS and then compared. Also, a “linear relaxation-based heuristic” procedure is proposed to yield a feasible initial solution within a significant shorter computational time. To illustrate the values of SDHIC, comprehensive calculations over a case study and generated sets of instances are conducted, including several sensitivity analysis.

Findings

The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of SDHIC for SMEs via combining batches and integrating the holding space of inventories, while the outcomes of the case study are aligned with those obtained from random sample examples, which confirms the trueness of used parameters and reveals the applicability of using SDHIC in real world. Finally, several interesting managerial implications for practitioners are extracted and presented.

Practical implications

Some of the managerial and practical implications are optimizing interactions of businesses involved in a supply chain of an IC containing some customers, suppliers and manufacturers and rectifying the present noteworthy gaps pertaining to the previously published research via using real assumptions and merging upstream and downstream of the supply chain through centralizing on storage of raw materials (supply echelon) and finished products (demand echelon) at the same place simultaneously to challenge a classic concept in which supply and demand echelons were being separately planned regarding their inventory management and logistics activities and showing the positive consequences of such challenge, showing the performance improvement of the proposed model compared to the classic model, by increasing the storing cost of raw materials and finished products, considering some disadvantages of using SDHIC and showing the usefulness of SDHIC in total, presenting some applied findings according to the obtained results of sensitivity analysis.

Originality/value

The key contributions of this paper to the literature are suggesting a new applied mathematical methodology to the supply chain (SC) of ICs by means of a conjoint provider of warehousing activities called SDHIC, comparing the new proposed model with the two classic ones and showing the proposed model’s dominancy, showing the helpful outcomes of collaborating 3PL with the SMEs in a cluster, proposing a “linear relaxation-based heuristic” procedure to yield a feasible initial solution within a significant shorter computational time and minimizing total supply chain costs of such IC by optimum application of facilities, lands and labor.

Abstract

Purpose

Lubricating oil leakage is a common issue in thermal power plant operation sites, requiring prompt equipment maintenance. The real-time detection of leakage occurrences could avoid disruptive consequences caused by the lack of timely maintenance. Currently, inspection operations are mostly carried out manually, resulting in time-consuming processes prone to health and safety hazards. To overcome such issues, this paper proposes a machine vision-based inspection system aimed at automating the oil leakage detection for improving the maintenance procedures.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach aims at developing a novel modular-structured automatic inspection system. The image acquisition module collects digital images along a predefined inspection path using a dual-light (i.e. ultraviolet and blue light) illumination system, deploying the fluorescence of the lubricating oil while suppressing unwanted background noise. The image processing module is designed to detect the oil leakage within the digital images minimizing detection errors. A case study is reported to validate the industrial suitability of the proposed inspection system.

Findings

On-site experimental results demonstrate the capabilities to complete the automatic inspection procedures of the tested industrial equipment by achieving an oil leakage detection accuracy up to 99.13%.

Practical implications

The proposed inspection system can be adopted in industrial context to detect lubricant leakage ensuring the equipment and the operators safety.

Originality/value

The proposed inspection system adopts a computer vision approach, which deploys the combination of two separate sources of light, to boost the detection capabilities, enabling the application for a variety of particularly hard-to-inspect industrial contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the impact of existence and lack of discount on the relationships between one manufacturer and one retailer under the cooperative and the non-cooperative games and the members’ profits are compared.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first approach, the manufacturer’s price function is constant, and in the second approach, this price function is a decreasing function with respect to lot size. These approaches are modeled through three games structure, including two Stackelberg games and one cooperative game.

Findings

Some numerical instances comprising sensitivity analysis are provided, and then the members’ profits in different scenarios are compared. This paper reveals that in the presented models, whether the members are inclined to change their profits.

Practical implications

This paper presents a tool of decision-making for the type of relationships of members in two different circumstances, and an approach is also presented to maximize the members’ profit.

Originality/value

In this paper, the relationships between one manufacturer and one retailer are studied under six different circumstances, where pricing, cooperative advertising and inventory cost are considered simultaneously. Also, a different model is presented to make a balance in individual profits and gain more profit for each member compared to the cooperative and non-cooperative game.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to design a supply chain network in an uncertain environment while exists two options for distribution of the perishable product and production lot-sizing is concerned.

Design/methodology/approach

Owing to the complexity of the mathematical model, a solution approach based on a Lagrangian relaxation (LR) heuristic is developed which provides good-quality upper and lower bounds.

Findings

The model output is discussed through various examples. The introduction of some enhancements and using some heuristics results in better outputs in the solution procedure.

Practical implications

This paper covers the modeling of some real-world problems in which demand is uncertain and managers face making some concurrent decisions related to supply chain management, transportation and logistics and inventory control issues. Furthermore, considering the perishability of product in modeling makes the problem more practically significant as these days there are many supply chains handling dairy and other fresh products.

Originality/value

Considering uncertainty, production, transshipment and perishable product in the inventory-routing problem makes a new variant that has not yet been studied. The proposed novel solution is based on the LR approach that is enhanced by some heuristics and some valid inequalities that make it different from the current version of the LR used by other studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The sudden arrival of Covid-19 severely disrupted the supply chain of personal protective equipment (PPE) in Australia. This paper aims to examine the development of a geographical cluster, which, through the application of additive manufacturing (AM), responded to the PPE supply crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

This longitudinal case study focuses on an AM cluster, which was developed to supply PPE in a responsive and flexible manner from 2019/2020. The study gathered data over three stages of cluster evolution: pre, during and post-peak Covid-19.

Findings

The type and nature of exchanges between organizations involved in the cluster established important insights into success factors for cluster creation and development. Using an established complexity framework, this study identifies the characteristics of establishing a cluster. The importance of cluster alignment created initially by a common PPE supply goal led to an emerging commercial and relational imperative to address the longer-term configuration after the disruption.

Practical implications

Clusters can be a viable option for a technology-driven sector when there is a “buzz” that drives and rapidly diffuses knowledge to support cluster formation. This research identifies the structural, socio-political and emergent dimensions, which need to be considered by stakeholders when aiming at improving competitiveness using clusters.

Originality/value

Covid-19 has rapidly and unexpectedly disrupted the supply chain for many industries. Responding to challenges, businesses will investigate different pathways to improve the overall resilience including on-/near-shoring. The results provide insights into how clusters are formed, grow and develop and the differentiating factors that result in successful impacts of clusters on local economies.
