Abstract

The purpose of this research is to understand the effects of Quality Management Award on stock prices movement and to examine the comparative advantages of quality award system in Korea and the US. This study compares the performances of QM Award companies in the stock market with those of the market index in both countries. We develop Korean Quality Award Index (KQA Index) based on the Baldridge Index of NIST in the US. We inspect three studies. Study 1 tests if the performance of MB Award winners and S&P500 index have a difference in the stock market. Study 2 tests if the performances of KQA winners and KOSPI (Korean Composite Stock Price Index) have a difference in the stock market. Study 3 tests if the performances of KQA winners and MB Award winners have a difference in the stock market. From the empirical tests, the performances of KQA winners are superior to those of KOSPI and performances of MB Award winners are superior to those of S&P500 and the performance of MB Award winners are superior to those of KQA winners.

Abstract

This research is to investigate the effect of the improvement of investment environments with investment incentive on Korean national economy by looking into the foreign investment support system in Korea. To this end, first research model was set up based on our literary study and case study was conducted on 150 foreign companies that were located in industrial complex for foreign companies, received the tax benefit and government subsidization. And it was found that even though the foreign companies were contributing to the national economy in general such as in the area of production, export, employment, development of technology, there was no significant contributory difference between the investment incentive beneficiary and non‐beneficiary foreign companies. Therefore it deemed reasonable to reconsider the way Korean government supports foreign companies in Korea and to reinforce foreign companies’ relevance to national policy agenda with additional incentives to foreign companies located in comparatively less developed areas. As a way to promote foreign investment, promotion of investment infra such as improvement of follow‐up services, openness to foreign investment, industrial deregulations in capital area, revitalization of free economic zone, efficient system to promote foreign investment and the reinforcement of public relations were considered necessary, especially the upgrading of economic structure and the integrated management of domestic and foreign investors deemed necessary for the optimal distribution of the industries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the causal relationships among categories in the China Quality Award (CQA) model based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award model.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper identifies seven factors from CQA categories: leadership, strategic planning, human resource focus, process management, customer and market focus, information and analysis, and results. Extending the basic Baldrige theory “Leadership drives the system that creates results,” this paper identifies driver (leadership), direction (strategic planning), foundation (information and analysis), system (human resource focus, process management, and customer and market focus), and results(business results). Structural equation model (SEM) is used to analyze the empirical data and estimate the path coefficients among CQA categories.

Findings

First, driver has not only a direct influence on results, but also has an indirect influence on results through system. Leadership has a great influence on foundation and direction. Second, direction affects human resource focus and customer and market focus of system while it has no influence on process management. Third, human resource focus and customer and market focus both affect process management, and process management has a significant impact on results. Fourth, foundation affects direction and all of the categories of system.

Originality/value

There are few studies which try to analyze the causal relationships among categories in the CQA model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to develop and test a model explaining users’ intention to adopt online games in China. Through theories from diverse fields of information systems research, the authors aim to examine and validate antecedents of users’ intentions to play online games.

Design/methodology/approach

The model proposes subjective norms and perceived control as antecedents to technology acceptance model (TAM) related beliefs, while suggesting convenience of operator, reality of design, provision of information and sense of belonging as antecedents of flow. The authors study the causal relations between the antecedents and usage intention by using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the causalities in the proposed model.

Findings

The results indicate that perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), flow and subjective norms are direct predictors of Chinese online games users’ intentions. Subjective norm and sense of belonging are shown to be important predictors of PU, while provision of information reveals an important negative influence on PU. At the same time, system quality shows no significant influence on PU. Perceived control and convenience of operator are both antecedents of PEOU. Furthermore, except for the sense of belonging, the proposed four antecedents of flow are tested for their effect on PU.

Originality/value

This research systematically includes relevant antecedents in MIS research to test online game users’ intention to adopt online games. It also provides some managerial insights that can guide Chinese online game companies to improve their games to attract users, and help foreign online game companies to make strategic plans to enter the huge Chinese online game market.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out how the efforts of Korean enterprises to convert data and information into knowledge are related to the use of information technology. It also aims to come up with plans to efficiently introduce external knowledge by applying information technology.This research was conducted focusing on the cases of enterprises that are carrying out knowledge management by applying information technology and the result shows that Korean enterprises place high value on the application of information technology in introducing knowledge management. However, the use of information technology is not common to all enterprises in four kinds of knowledge conversion. For an organization to efficiently acquire and apply valuable knowledge, the boundary of an enterprise should be extended, and for this, the enterprise should be changed into an extended knowledge enterprise, which is founded on the trust and compensation of all the interested parties. In an extended knowledge enterprise, its first consideration is to acquire knowledge that can efficiently manage and control the interests of customers, suppliers, public institutions, and competitors that exist in the surroundings and to acquire the core knowledge that can make those people and institutions participate. In addition, the organization should possess knowledge base and information communication technology that can smoothly convert data and information into knowledge, by efficiently connecting them.
