The purpose of this paper is to identify the reasons for the differences of executives' compensation across industries from the managerial discretion perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the reasons for the differences of executives' compensation across industries from the managerial discretion perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the data from 37 manufacturing industries from 2002 to 2007 in China, managerial discretion for each industry is calculated regarding to the conception raised by Hambrick and Finkelstein which is further clustered into three groups. Then, regression model is used to testify the relation between managerial discretion and executives' compensation.

Findings

The executives' compensation is positively related to managerial discretion that is determined by the industrial environment. In the faster growing or higher competing industries, the executives tend to have more managerial discretion, thus they will be better paid due to the extensive latitude of their decision making.

Research limitations/implications

To a certain extent, managerial discretion can be taken to measure the uncertainty or marginal productivity of the executives' work. From the industrial perspective, there are actually some factors far beyond the control of executives but influencing their pay.

Practical implications

When designing the compensation system for the executives, the industrial factors surely should be taken into consideration, to work out a fair and competitive incentive plan.

Originality/value

The paper proves a very important point in the issue of the decisive factors for executives' compensation. Managerial discretion raises the uncertainty and complexity to executives' work, thus it determines the compensation.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing attention to the significant number of unsuccessful (abandoned) cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions in recent years, the purpose of this paper is to analyze three litigated cross-border inbound acquisitions that associated with an emerging economy – India, such as Vodafone-Hutchison and Bharti Airtel-MTN deals in the telecommunications industry, and Vedanta-Cairn India deal in the oil and gas exploration industry. The study intends to explore how do institutional and political environments in the host country affect the completion likelihood of cross-border acquisition negotiations.

Design/methodology/approach

Nested within the interdisciplinary framework, the study adopts a legitimate method in qualitative research, that is, case study method, and performs a unit of analysis and cross-case analysis of sample cases.

Findings

The critical analysis suggests that government officials’ erratic nature and ruling political party intervention have detrimental effects on the success of Indian-hosted cross-border deals with higher bid value, listed target firm, cash payment, and stronger government control in the target industry. The findings emerge from the cross-case analysis of sample cases contribute to the Lucas paradox – why does not capital flow from rich to poor countries and interdisciplinary M&A literature on the completion likelihood of international takeovers.

Practical implications

The findings have several implications for multinational managers who typically involve in cross-border negotiations. The causes and consequences of sample cases would help develop economy firms who intend to invest in emerging economies. The study also offers some implications of M&A for telecommunications and extractive industries.

Originality/value

Although a huge amount of extant research investigates why M&A fail to create value to the shareholders during the public announcement and post-merger stages, there is a significant dearth of research on the causes and consequences of delayed or abandoned national and international deals. The paper fills this knowledge gap by discussing an in-depth cross-case analysis of Indian-hosted cross-border acquisitions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a novel multivariate fractional grey model termed GM(a, n) based on the classical GM(1, n) model. The new model can provide accurate prediction with more freedom, and enrich the content of grey theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The GM(α, n) model is systematically studied by using the grey modelling technique and the forward difference method. The optimal fractional order a is computed by the genetic algorithm. Meanwhile, a stochastic testing scheme is presented to verify the accuracy of the new GM(a, n) model.

Findings

The recursive expressions of the time response function and the restored values of the presented model are deduced. The GM(1, n), GM(a, 1) and GM(1, 1) models are special cases of the model. Computational results illustrate that the GM(a, n) model provides accurate prediction.

Research limitations/implications

The GM(a, n) model is used to predict China’s total energy consumption with the raw data from 2006 to 2016. The superiority of the GM(a, n) model is more freedom and better modelling by fractional derivative, which implies its high potential to be used in energy field.

Originality/value

It is the first time to investigate the multivariate fractional grey GM(α, n) model, apply it to study the effects of China’s economic growth and urbanization on energy consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether corporate stconcerns on social responsibility issues pressurize corporate managers to act in a socially responsible way and how this affects corporate value.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows previous studies such as Wu et al. (2008) and Jiang and Huang (2011) in using the research model.

Findings

The analysis shows that in regions where large attention paid to demolitions, corporate managers are under great pressure from corporate stakeholders and they thus act in more socially responsible ways; this, in turn, results in higher corporate values. Furthermore, in regions in which demolition events attract more attention, the increase in corporate value is relatively small for state-owned enterprises and unprofitable listed enterprises.

Originality/value

The findings demonstrate that internet governance heightens corporate stakeholders’ awareness of social responsibility, and this leads to pressure on corporate relative behaviors to satisfy the requests of corporate stakeholders, leading to an increase in corporate value and improvement in social welfare.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new disruptive maintenance model based on new technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is carrying out through the impact of the Industry 4.0, Internet of things, big data, virtual reality and additive manufacturing on maintenance.

Findings

The findings are that new technologies are an evolutionary challenge that is immediately affecting maintenance engineering. It presents a unique opportunity to make a disruptive evolution of maintenance.

Research limitations/implications

The correct development of Maintenance 4.0 relates to the correct implementation of Industry 4.0.

Practical implications

Maintenance 4.0 will greatly improve the main operating indicators: safety, reliability, availability and cost.

Social implications

Maintenance 4.0 will contribute to a circular and sustainable economy.

Originality/value

For the first time, a complete new Maintenance Engineering 4.0 model is proposed. The application of the new technologies appears in each specific maintenance process of the product life cycle.

Abstract

Purpose

To combine the forecasting by single method using influence information fully, other than regular combined methods only focusing on historical forecasting errors.

Design/methodology/approach

To combine the single methods based on the analysis of improved gray correlation, with more related information being considered to enhance the price forecasting precision, such as the trend of the prices, the historical forecasting errors, and the temporal influence factors on prices.

Findings

A case of PJM market of USA shows that the proposed method has better performance than any other combined methods, and all single models as well.

Research limitations/implications

The combined performance depends on the forecasting precision of single methods, and the correlation between the single methods, as well as the number of single method that to be combined.

Practical implications

It is a novel idea for combined method to forecasting the time series data, such as electricity prices, electric power loads.

Originality/value

The proposed method considers all the following factors: the similarity between the trends of the single forecasting, the errors of the single models and the temporal influence.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumers use cues to assess whether a recovery is effective. Prior literature on service recovery has focused mainly on individual-related factors. This paper aims to study how other consumers in the same failure and recovery influence an individual consumer to evaluate the firm ' s recovery efforts.

Design/methodology/approach

Two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 tested the interaction effects between recovery modes (public vs private) and recovery dimensions (economic vs social) on an individual consumer ' s evaluation of a recovery strategy for a group service failure. Experiment 2 investigated the complementary role of social recovery on economic compensation.

Findings

Experiment 1 identified a significant interaction effect. Results suggest that an individual in a group service failure responds more favorably to public economic recovery than to private recovery. However, an individual ' s reaction to social recovery follows the opposite pattern. Furthermore, in experiment 2 a complementary effect between economic recovery and social recovery was found.

Originality/value

One potential contribution is that the paper sheds light on the issue related to the influence from other affected consumers in the same service failure and recovery situation in affected consumers ' recovery evaluation. An individual will consider the recovery other individuals receive when he or she evaluates the recovery ' s strategy. The paper also provides insight into the complementary use of economic and social recoveries to enhance a consumer ' s evaluation of a firm ' s overall recovery at a reduced cost.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from wastewater by using activated carbon-supported Fe catalysts derived from walnut shell prepared using a wetness impregnation process. The different conditions of preparation such as impregnation rate and calcination conditions (temperature and time) were optimized to determine their effects on the catalyst’s characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

The catalyst samples were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by using using activated carbon supported Fe catalysts derived from walnut shell as an adsorbent and catalyst was investigated under different adsorption conditions. The parameters studied were contact time, adsorbent dose, solution pH and initial concentrations.

Findings

Results showed that higher adsorption capacity and rapid kinetics were obtained when the activated walnut shell was impregnated with Fe at 5 per cent and calcined under N2 flow at 400°C for 2 h. The adsorption isotherms data were analyzed with Langmuir and Freundlich models. The better fit is obtained with the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 29.67 mg/g for Cr(VI) on Fe5-AWS at pH 2.0.

Originality/value

A comparison of two kinetic models shows that the adsorption isotherms system is better described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the operation and maintenance practices within wind power applications and to clarify practical needs as gaps between researchers and practitioners.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper collects, categorizes, and analyzes the published literature of both researchers and practitioners systematically.

Findings

The paper defines significant issues in operation and maintenance of wind energy related to: site and seasonal asset disturbances; stakeholders’ requirements trade‐off; dependability and asset deterioration challenges; diagnostic, prognostic and information and communication technologies (ICTs) applications; and maintenance optimization models. Within each category, the gaps and further research needs have been extracted with respect to both an academic and industrial perspective.

Practical implications

The use of wind energy is growing rapidly and the associated practices related to maintenance and asset management are still lacking. Therefore, the literature review of operation and maintenance is a necessity to uncover the holistic issues and interrelationships of what has so far been published as detailed and fragmented topics to specific issues. Wind energy assets represent modern renewable energy assets which are affected by environmental disturbances, rapid technological development, rapid scaling‐up processes, the stochastic and dynamic nature of operations and degradation, the integrity and interoperability of system‐to‐support.

Originality/value

The paper provides a comprehensive review of research contributions and industrial development efforts. That will be useful to the life cycle stakeholders in both academia and industry in understanding the maintenance problem and solution space within the wind energy context.
