Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of psychological ownership on work engagement and job burnout within international tourist hotel employees, and simultaneously examine the moderating role of regulatory foci.

Design/methodology/approach

This research collected questionnaire samples from the employees of international tourist hotels in the cities of Taiwan (Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung) and China (Xiamen and Quanzhou). Purposive sampling was adopted. In total, 300 questionnaires were distributed to each hotel, and the total number of questionnaires finally distributed reached 1,500.

Findings

This research applies social identity theory and regulatory theory to develop a new research framework with the sample of the employees in the five-star international tourism hotel. This study found that psychological ownership has a significant and positive effect on work engagement and has a negative effect on job burnout. In addition, regulatory foci moderate the relationship between psychological ownership and work engagement as well as the relationship between psychological ownership and job burnout respectively. These analytic results fill the research gap within the literature in relation to the moderating effects of a regulatory focus on psychological ownership’s relationships to work engagement and job burnout.

Originality/value

This study explains how employees with high psychological ownership will develop higher work engagement and lower job burnout. In addition, this research also includes regulatory foci as a situational variable to examine the moderating relationship with psychological ownership, work engagement, and job burnout.

Purpose

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the attributes of market knowledge (depth/breadth) and particular types of (process/product) innovation. The mediating mechanism of ambidextrous (exploratory/exploitative) capabilities is also investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from 153 travel agencies from two phases of data collection in Taiwan were analyzed using the structural equation modeling method.

Findings

Market knowledge depth directly and positively impacts product and process innovation. Market knowledge breadth indirectly and positively impacts product and process innovation. Ambidextrous capabilities affect process and product innovation and mediate the effect of market knowledge breadth on the two innovations.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides different theoretical views, such as dynamic capability and organizational learning, to supplement the explanation of knowledge-based theory in the relationship between market knowledge and innovation.

Practical implications

This study encourages firms to accumulate market knowledge depth and breadth and facilitate ambidextrous capabilities for innovation.

Originality/value

Seldom has research explored the relationships between the attributes of market knowledge and types of innovation simultaneously to extend the input-process-output context. This study has done so and forwards the possibility that ambidextrous capability is critical mechanism.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on leader-member exchange theory and regulatory focus theory, the purpose of this study is to explore the effects of hotel employees’ regulatory foci on their voice behavior and the moderating role of leader-member exchange.

Design/methodology/approach

The questionnaire includes demographics, regulatory foci, leader-member exchange and voice behavior sections. The data was collected via a survey of 10 international tourist hotels in Taiwan and 479 valid questionnaires were completed. Confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis were used to test the composite reliability, discriminant validity and convergent validity. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The outcome of this study indicates that both promotion focus and prevention focus can benefit employees’ voice behavior; however, prevention-focused employees have more positive voice behavior than promotion-focused employees. In addition, the leader-member exchange can moderate the relationship between regulatory foci and voice behavior.

Originality/value

This is an empirical study in the hotel field to examine the moderating effects of leader-member exchange on the relationships between regulatory foci and voice behavior. This research is contributed toward human resource management literature in the hospitality and tourism domain. Practices for managers and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the mediating effects of role overload and job security on the relationship between leader–member exchange and work engagement and simultaneously examines the impact of role overload on employees’ job security.

Design/methodology/approach

By means of telephone and email, the study inquired eight international tourist hotels’ willingness, and questionnaires were distributed to employees of these hotels in 2014. The hotel employees were asked to participate, and they have the right to agree or not. After discarding unusable responses, 310 individual surveys ratings were collected from a total of 500 self-administrated questionnaires were distributed (a 62.0 per cent response rate).

Findings

The result indicates that role overload and job security have mediating effects on the relationship between leader–member exchange and work engagement. Also, role overload can positively influence job security.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the mediating roles of role overload and job security between LMX and work engagement, as well as the influence of role overload on job security. This study attempts to make contributions to human resource management literatures of hospitality and tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

Recreational scuba diving is one of the fastest growing tourism industries around the world and has become a popular activity in Taiwan. Few studies focus on enduring involvement with a high risk or difficult activity specialization, so this study aims to explore the causal relationship between enduring involvement and specialization and seeks to explain sustained involvement in scuba diving activity as a recreation specialization.

Design/methodology/approach

This research selects four diving sites in Taiwan as survey locations, specifically Yeliou, Longdong, Kenting and Green Island. The questionnaire consists of three sections, including demographic information, enduring involvement and specialization. By analyzing the data collected from 810 scuba divers in Taiwan, structural equation modeling is used to examine the causal relationships among the variables.

Findings

The primary findings of this study are as follows: attraction positively affects divers’ commitment and lifestyle through joy, relaxation and sharing diving experiences; the results indicate that self-expression is associated with past experience of participating in scuba diving activity; and centrality indicates that participants’ daily life and recreation are related to each other and become central to their life. Results show that most theoretical hypotheses are supported, but there is no significant evidence of attraction impacting past experience or self-expression influencing commitment and lifestyle.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine the causal influence of enduring involvement and specialization in the scuba diving context. The findings provide a solid theoretical basis for the study of sustained involvement motivation and behavior on specialization. Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

2013

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on organizational support theory, this study aims to propose and test a moderated path analysis to explore the interactive effect of perceived supervisor support and supervisors’ organizational embodiment on organizational citizenship behavior, as well as the mediating effect of perceived organizational support.

Design/methodology/approach

Hypotheses are tested using two-phase survey data collected from 398 dyads of employees and their immediate supervisors from 26 (three-to-five star) hotels in Taiwan.

Findings

The hierarchical linear modeling results suggest that perceived organizational support mediates the relationship between perceived supervisor support and organizational citizenship behavior. These findings indicate that supervisors’ organizational embodiment positively moderates the relationship between perceived supervisor support and perceived organizational support, which, in turn, mediates the interaction between perceived supervisor support and supervisors’ organizational embodiment on organizational citizenship behavior.

Research limitations/implications

This is the first study to examine the moderating role of supervisors’ organizational embodiment in hospitality domain. In high or low supervisors’ organizational embodiment context, hotels are supposed to assign representative managers that could strengthen the efficiency of perceived supervisor support. Finally, employees will perceive organizational support and then lead to employee organizational citizenship behavior.

Originality/value

Previous research indicates that perceived organizational support positively impacts various employee outcomes. However, the antecedents and psychological mechanisms of perceived organizational support are still not well understood. This research intends to fill these gaps in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This research examines the relationships among transformational/transactional leadership styles (TFLs/TSLs), organizational justice, trust, organizational commitment, and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) in the context of international tourist hotels in Taipei. The purpose of this paper is to establish a comprehensive model of TFLs/TSLs in human resource management and to figure out which is the better leadership style in regards to the hospitality industry.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 700 questionnaires were distributed to the staff of eight international hotels, yielding 358 valid responses.

Findings

TFLs/TSLs affect procedural and distributive justice significantly and positively. Managers using TFLs can induce trust of employees. TFLs positively affect organizational commitment through distributive justice and trust, while TSLs induce organizational commitment through distributive justice. Distributive justice has directly positive impact on trust. Distributive justice-organizational commitment is a positive link. Interestingly, TSLs influence organizational commitment negatively and significantly. As expected, trust can lead to organizational commitment and both trust and organizational commitment have positive impact on OCBs.

Originality/value

The results could be used as the basis for improving human resources management in such a collectivistic culture as Chinese society.

Abstract

Purpose

Data collection from inbound tourists is a repetitive activity. This paper's main purpose is to show that, unless something useful about the nature of change is being established, repetitious collection of data from, for example, inbound visitors results in ineffective accumulation of data. The paper also aims to elucidate what it means for data to be ineffective for practical application or theory development.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach was to examine three years of data from inbound visitors to Taiwan to consider what would make data collection more effective.

Findings

Collecting many specific variables relating to travel by inbound tourists can result in recognizing segments and other matters important for applied research or theory development. Analysis shows detailed information can have limited use and high cost when different details apply to different segments. After identifying segments to study, effective information collection can require segment specific questioning, special sampling and segment specific studies.

Originality/value

While various countries conduct special studies, annual collection of a wide variety of information from inbound tourists is a common practice. This research provides new perspectives on why some data collection practices should be modified.

Abstract

Purpose

For the past two decades, researchers have been exploring knowledge of work engagement in the hospitality and tourism industry (HTI). This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of global research trends in the field through a bibliometric analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 335 papers from 2005 to 2021 were searched using the Scopus database. The analysis focused on the temporal distribution, most productive journals, countries/territories, institutions, authors, international and authors' collaboration, the most cited publications and author keywords. The VOS viewer and R software were used to visualise the scientific landscapes.

Findings

The results indicated a rapidly increasing trend of studies on work engagement in the HTI. The journal with the most published articles was the International Journal of Hospitality Management. The USA ranked first in production, and Karatepe, O.M., from Turkey was the leading author. The first and most cited article was from Salanova et al. (2005). Other themes were identified, mainly related to job resources and outcomes associated with work engagement.

Practical implications

The study provides a more comprehensive understanding of the progress of work engagement in HTI studies and offers clues for further investigation in this field.

Originality/value

This is the first paper to explore work engagement in the HTI using quantitative and visualised bibliometric analysis.
