Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a state-of-the-art review pertaining to the topic of multi-actor innovation in the music industry. Because of the changing nature of the marketing paradigm from product dominant to service dominant, as well as the emerging paradigm of open, collaborative and co-innovation, this study attempts to integrate and map the previous papers that have examined the concept of multi-actor innovation in the context of the music industry.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review is carried out to produce the analysis. Various scholarly articles from well-known databases are taken into considerations in this study. These papers are then classified based on the types of innovation, category and sub-category of innovation, value capture and value creation, as well as its general characteristics. This classification is primarily aimed at mapping the development of previous studies in the current field and examining the current research gaps to propose future research agendas.

Findings

Previous researchers have shown that innovation concepts have been developed into various streams, namely, closed, open, collaborative and co-innovation. In addition to this point, the debates regarding the consumers’ roles in the market have pinpointed that innovation also calls for more participative forms rather than isolated. Nevertheless, discussions that pertain to open, collaborative and co-innovation in the context of the music business, have still been lacking and, therefore, demand more explanations.

Originality/value

This study is the first to present the topic of multi-actor innovation in the music business to the scholarly literature. Based on the review carried out in this study, scholars that are particularly interested in the field of open, collaborative and co-innovation within the context of the music industry can comprehend the development of previous discussions and, therefore, justify future research agendas.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous work has asserted that the co-innovation process in the music business is composed of four stages, i.e. co-discovery, co-creation, co-delivery and co-capture. This study aims to re-examine and validate this proposed conceptualisation by gathering and interviewing additional respondents, specifically academics and professional event organisers, who were not formerly involved. By gaining more insight from different stakeholders, this study expects to gain more reliable results regarding the proposed concept derived from the previous study.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the case study method by carrying out qualitative interview data collection from 11 respondents. Narrative analysis is used in examining the findings. Pattern matching is used as the basis of the analysis using the proposed conceptualisation from co-discovery to co-capture of co-innovation as the rival analysis to the empirical findings discovered in this study. This paper also discusses how the validity and reliability of the qualitative analysis carried out are ensured.

Findings

This study supports the notion that the co-innovation process in the music industry follows the four stages of co-discovery, co-creation, co-delivery and co-capture. The respondents, from different professional backgrounds, interviewed in this study indicated and validated that the proposed framework aligns with their actual practices, expectations and realities, along with their specific roles in the music industry’s ecosystems.

Practical implications

The results of this study can be used as a reference in developing guidelines or policies for co-innovation practices in the music business, which previous studies have not explored, e.g. focusing only on preconditions for positive collaboration, open license and music for co-creation or discussions that are merely conceptual.

Originality/value

This study validates the co-innovation process in the music business proposed by the previous works, which integrates the value chain thinking concept within the analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply a systems thinking methodology to analyse Indonesia’s new and renewable energy (NRE) electricity sector to describe the complex interrelations between its actors and variables, identify the systemic patterns and formulate recommendations for the policymakers.

Design/methodology/approach

Systems thinking methodology is used to observe the NRE electricity system and compile the corresponding data into a meaningful diagram to describe and recommend solutions for the sector’s issues. Causal loop diagram is used as the main method in this study with a deeper analysis of system archetypes to uncover the system behaviour. Soft system methodology and critical system heuristic are used partially to clarify the system boundaries, cultivate the perspective of the involved actors and problem categorization.

Findings

A comprehensive diagram is developed to present interrelation between all the components within the NRE electricity sector in Indonesia and the expected impact of any act or change to the entire system. Based on the causal interrelations between variables, typical systemic patterns or archetypes are used to identify unproductive patterns towards achieving the NRE electricity sector objectives.

Originality/value

The findings provide an initial outlook on the variables and systemic patterns within the system as a critical consideration in the decision-making process and policy development for the NRE electricity sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify all variables and parameters related to business and emission within the petrochemical industry. The variables and parameters specified will be modeled into a system dynamic model that will be a baseline for the proposed best scenario(s) to address the business issue related to emission reduction in the petrochemical industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature review and stakeholder interviews were conducted to define the key factors contributing to the emission reduction of the petrochemical industry. The key factors are then developed into a system dynamic model to measure the quantitative impact of changes in those variables on emission and industry profitability.

Findings

This paper provides an analysis of system dynamic model. It suggests that process optimization can lead to a slight amount reduction in emissions. In contrast, a significant reduction shows in the simulation result of bio-based feedstock utilization and implementation of advanced technology. To sustain the emission reduction, strong commitment from stakeholders and support from the government will play an important role.

Research limitations/implications

This research is limited to problem analysis of the primary product (high-value chemical) of the petrochemical industry by only considering the changes in the key factors of emission reduction.

Practical implications

This paper includes implications for interventions that can be imposed to reduce emission while retaining the business profitability.

Originality/value

The contribution of this study is to find the best scenario that can boost emission reduction within Indonesia’s petrochemical industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain (BC) is a technological innovation that emphasizes the opposite paradigm compared to the available technology. This paradigm enables changing the firm’s business models (BMs) and has been elaborated by many experts. However, the discussion is scattered in various sources, particularly academic journals. This study aims to investigate the literature on the coexistence of BCs and BMs and depict the currently available situation that has not been discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigated articles focusing on the coexistence of BCs and BMs through heterogeneous academic databases, namely, Emerald, ProQuest, Taylor & Francis, ScienceDirect and Scopus. The systematic approach and development of inclusion criteria used in this study resulted in 52 key articles for further review. This systematic review followed the PRISMA framework and a timeframe between 2012 and 2022.

Findings

This study classifies literature based on specific themes, the integration of BC (interaction and evolution) and BM innovation (innovativeness, new value system and system logic), including the research design. As expected, the literature on BCs and BMs appears to be focused on particular themes since this topic appears to have grown. This study identifies gaps in the literature and describes future research to accommodate the study discrepancy.

Research limitations/implications

The major limitation of this study is the research bias. Such a bias might occur due to the misinterpretations of researchers in this study. In the process of devising databases and keywords, this study identified the potential for misinterpretation. This study sought to use rigid protocols through a manual approach to mitigate the potential bias. A research bias also has the potential to arise in the literature classification. A literature categorization is performed back and forth, by referring to the theory or concept of a particular topic. The next limitation is limited access to scientific databases. This study drew upon several reputable scientific journal databases. However, the researcher considered the journal selection to be built upon a journal’s accessibility, multi-disciplinary nature and data size compared to other journals. It allows the analysis results to be biased, as they do not represent all available databases. However, the study used the available formal access to maintain the integrity of this research.

Originality/value

This study conducts a systematic review that discusses the coexistence of BCs and BMs. Furthermore, it provides a profound understanding of the discussion carried out through certain themes and the outlook for the future.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the process, structure and determinants of persistent illegal gold mining in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

An exploratory study included a literature review, field observations and in-depth interviews. Fieldwork was conducted at two mining locations in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Sixteen respondents representing key stakeholders: government, mining companies, mining associations and community, including illegal miners, were interviewed. The findings of the literature review were categorized as the push or pull factors within the topics, and field observations verified the literature review results regarding Indonesia. Interview data were analyzed using content analysis methods. A structural diagram of the actors and causal loop diagrams among the determinants of illegal gold mining was created and interpreted.

Findings

A complex activity process and structure were revealed involving a range of actors. Politicians, government officials and law enforcement authorities added the complexity to the structure. Six main determinants of persistent illegal gold mining emerged: financial, low entry barrier, regulations and policies, supporting resources availability, politics and power and psychosocial factors.

Practical implications

This study provides a deeper understanding for policymakers to consider when formulating policies on natural resources, and insights for mining companies to minimize conflicts with the community.

Originality/value

The study contributes to our knowledge of the complex structure and main determinants of illegal gold mining in Indonesia, which supports efforts to curtail this illegal activity.

Abstract

Purpose

A blockchain (BC) is a breakthrough technological invention that comprises entirely different mental models than conventional technology. This fundamental difference can potentially change the systems of many organizations since the current systems are built upon a centralized paradigm. The adoption of BC brings various benefits to an organization which can initiate changes to a business model (BM). However, the contribution of BC for business model innovation (BMI) is challenging to identify. Therefore, this study aims to understand and describe the adoption of BC for developing BMI.

Design/methodology/approach

This study presents a model that describes the adoption of BC for developing BMI. To justify the model, this study used an empirical approach based on multiple case study through a rigorous process. The case study selection process referred to the products or services that adopt BC to deliver to their customers and monetize their businesses, which resulted in six cases in different areas. Meanwhile, the data collection applied semi-structured interviews and adequate secondary data. The data/information was analyzed using a value proposition, creation, and capture framework.

Findings

The findings identify the adoption of BC in BMIs generated through value creation as a new technological sub-element. This technological adoption evidently affects value proposition and value capture in a different mode. Furthermore, through the model, this study classifies the adoption of BC in BMI based on two dimensions: (1) the level of complexity of BC adoption and (2) the intensity of BMI. The findings show that the cases in this study are dispersed among all quadrants of the conceptual model.

Originality/value

This study can serve as an antecedent for stakeholders in the innovation of BC-based BMs and their implementation patterns. Simultaneously, this study sheds light on the body of knowledge about BC adoption for developing BMI through a validated model from selected cases and technical experts. This study also describes the BC-based activity systems that provide the contributions and benefits from the technology.

Purpose

Blockchain technology has encouraged more transparent transactions process through decentralized protocols and has identified multi-dimensional benefits. However, value innovation–based blockchain for the particular industry requires further elaboration since there appears to be a vague understanding. Therefore, this study aims to provide a profound perspective of value innovation based blockchain, which has the potential to be applied in the halal industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This study developed a typology model that describes a profound understanding of blockchain adoption for value innovation. Empirical research was conducted using multiple case studies to justify the model. The case selection in this study was based on the halal industry in Indonesia. This study employed few sources to derive sufficient data through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and archival records. In particular, this study drew upon specific theories to elaborate on the blockchain-enable value innovation.

Findings

A blockchain is identified as having the opportunity to promote value innovation in the halal industry through its features. This study defines a typology model of value innovation-based blockchain for the halal industry that takes place on a particular spectrum. The model built in this study classifies blockchain adoption for the halal industry from specific dimensions: the degree of blockchain-based system complexity and the intensity of value innovation. Then, this study finds that these cases have different classifications and are evenly distributed in the quadrants of the model.

Originality/value

The typology model in this study can be a reference for decision-making when considering blockchain to leverage a value innovation in particular systems. Although blockchain technology can potentially be applied in vast areas, the decision-makers should understand that technology adoption should provide distinct values to its stakeholders, notably in multi-dimensional areas such as the halal industry. Thus, this study contributes significantly to blockchain technology usage for the halal industry.
