Abstract

Shingosen fabrics (new synthetic‐fibre fabrics) have been accepted by consumers because of their new handling properties and are rapidly becoming popular as material for women's dresses. Seam puckering, however, is becoming a serious problem in the sewing process for these fabrics, especially those fabrics woven with micro denier fibres. An investigation was carried out to correlate seam puckering with fabric mechanical properties and also with penetration force of sewing needles. The results are: (1) When sewing is carried out normally, the seam pucker of shingosen fabrics is well predicted by the “seam‐pucker prediction equation” which has been derived for men's suit fabrics, based on fabric weight and mechanical parameters derived by tensile, bending and shearing fabric properties. (2) The case that a sewing needle breaks woven yarns and makes holes (sewing eyes) in fabric is observed often in the sewing of high dense weave woven by micro denier fibres. In this case, the seam pucker is reduced because of less restriction of yarn movement through the holes. (3) A new prediction equation for seam pucker of shingosen fabrics is derived on the basis of sewing experiments with shingosen instead of the men's suiting equation. The prediction ability of this new equation is higher than that of men's suiting.

Abstract

Purpose

To investigate the effect of poly ethylene glycol (PEG) chain length on the dielectric properties of paraffin‐based PEG polymers (H(CH2)n–(OCH2CH2)mOH) from both experimental and analytical approach.

Design/methodology/approach

Dielectric constant studies of paraffin‐based PEG polymers were carried out at temperatures above the melting point. The measurements were carried out at frequencies between 0.4 and 20 GHz. The number of PEG units, m, was varied from 0 to 80 to investigate the effect of the PEG chain length on the dielectric properties of the whole polymer.

Findings

With the existence of a dipole moment on PEG but not on pure paraffin, both the real and imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity become larger with increasing chain length of PEG. PEG 3000 showed the highest dielectric constants in the measured frequency range. The effect of the PEG chain length can be explained well by introducing the fraction of molecular weight of PEG divided by the molecular weight of the whole polymer (we call this fraction “Mw fraction of PEG”). Both, real and imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity exhibit a cubic dependence of the molecular weight fraction, and the loss tangent exhibits a linear dependence. These relationships make it possible to predict the microwave heating of the polymer in function of the PEG chain length, carbon chain length and microwave frequency.

Originality/value

For the dielectric permittivity of paraffin‐based PEG polymers, the effect of the PEG chain length, carbon chain length and applied microwave frequency on the loss tangent was explained well by introducing the molecular weight fraction of PEG.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide an overview of the Japanese publishing industry and to compare it with the publishing industry in the United Kingdom to see whether similarities and differences are industry- or culture-specific.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides detailed descriptions of the activities of the three main players in the Japanese publishing industry (publishers/editors; distributors; and booksellers). This tripartite structure of the industry encourages divide-and-rule mechanisms also found in the Japanese advertising industry. At the same time, a comparison with the UK publishing industry reveals certain structural differences between it and the Japanese publishing industry.

Findings

Three developments that have affected trade relations in the UK publishing industry (retail chains, literary agents, and mergers and acquisitions) do not have such great impact in Japan. In Japan, wholesale distributors are extremely powerful – something not noted, but possibly overlooked, by Thompson for the UK publishing industry. Comparative material between Japan and the United Kingdom, as well as across industries within Japan, suggest certain cultural influences prevail in the organization of Japanese publishing.

Research limitations/implications

The Japanese publishing industry appears to operate under certain cultural constraints that inhibit cross-cultural comparison, while enabling cross-industry comparison within Japan. Why this is so needs further research. Can the parallels between advertising and publishing industries be extended to other forms of cultural production in Japan? In particular, the way in which money is circulated within an industry has an influential effect upon its structure.

Practical implications

A useful source of information for practitioners and academics interested in the functioning of a non-Western publishing industry. The paper also provides food for thought for those interested in trying to better the organization of publishing in Japan and/or the United Kingdom.

Originality/value

A hitherto undocumented comparative study in English of the Japanese publishing industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review research on gender and disasters in Japan, from the Kobe Earthquake to the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). Gender perspectives were not adequately considered immediately after these disasters. Rather, disasters reinforced the gender roles prevalent in Japanese society. The paper seeks ways to position gender perspectives into mainstream thought on disaster management in Japan.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review was conducted of secondary Japanese sources including peer-reviewed and non-academic journals published by governmental and non-governmental organisations after the Kobe, Niigata Chuetsu, and GEJEs. Popularly searched keywords were the Japanese for “gender” or “women”, and “disasters”.

Findings

A review of the published literature indicated that gender-related issues experienced during the Kobe Earthquake in 1995 and the Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake in 2004 were repeated following the GEJE in 2011. Japan has experienced numerous disasters; thus, the importance of gender perspectives has been gradually recognised and has received increased attention after the GEJE. This paper emphasises that these should be embedded at policy level and within disaster management structures to create disaster resilient communities.

Originality/value

To date, not much research in Japan, and none published in English, has reviewed gender- and disaster-related issues.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the forensic investigation (FORIN) approach, the purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that exacerbated the loss of human life in one of the most devastated local municipalities on the coast by 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (GEJET) disaster.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper begins by reviewing the extent of damage to the local municipalities along the Sanriku ria coast, which has a long history of tsunami disasters. Second, the paper compares previous major tsunami events by using a human vulnerability index, and applies this index to detect the city of Rikuzentakata. Third, the paper identifies the root causes of the GEJET disaster in the city. Interview records with disaster victims were used to elucidate the main factors that exacerbated the number of deaths.

Findings

The study indicates that the FORIN approach can be effectively applied to identify the target city for this case study and to point to those factors the most exacerbated human sufferings, and also provides many lessons based on research findings and methodologies to support building resilient societies in the future.

Originality/value

This paper indicates FORIN approach as an effective research template by investigating the GEJET disaster.
