Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on supply chain quality (SCQ) in the hospitality industry in China, and to stress the importance of the synergy of quality management (QM) and supply chain management (SCM). The authors have investigated the relationship among QM practices, SCM practices, SCQ and hotel performance, and examined the effect of contextual variables.

Design/methodology/approach

This study mainly uses a questionnaire survey to collect data relating to the research hypotheses. Structural equation model technique is suited for our research purposes, and the LISREL software is implemented to test the conceptual model.

Findings

The results show that QM practices and SCM practices are significantly correlated. QM practices/SCM practices are positively related to SCQ, and consequently influence hotel performance. SCQ has the mediating effect between QM/SCM practices and hotel performance. Contextual variables truly play a moderator between QM/SCM practices and SCQ.

Research limitations/implications

Hotel managers should look beyond their own hotels into supply chain to manage quality, highlight the importance of interdepartmental or external (i.e. customers or suppliers) connectedness, such as building close and long-term relationships with well-chosen suppliers, encouraging customer involvement and establishing an effective interface for accumulating information regarding customers’ needs and feedback. Hotel managers are also able to realize the influence of contextual variables (e.g. the new normal state of the Chinese economy), and further to gain chance of hotel’s survival.

Originality/value

This study focuses on SCQ and tries to fill a gap in the exiting literature on SCQ management in hospitality industry.

Abstract

Industry competition environment is not being meaning of internal and external distinction. This may be phenomenon of globalization progress. In this time, we wish to examine present level in our enterprise and also analyze cause relation between 7 category of China Excellence Performance model which is modified Malcolm Baldridge Model and compare with China enterprise by using the same questionnaire with China. It is right opportunity to obtain information by comparing China enterprise with the Korea. This questionnaire composition and contents used as it is questionnaire contents that enforce in 2007 in China CAQ. The survey on Korea enterprises’ is 509 by KSA in 2008, China is surveyed 1679 by CAQ in 2007. In Korea “leadership”, “strategy planning”, “customer and market”, “measurement, analysis and improvement”, “resources management” and “process management” stronger than China, but in China “performance results” is stronger than Korea.

Abstract

The process of producing software differs in many aspects from that of traditional manufacturing. Software is not manufactured in the classical sense. Development of software more closely resembles the development effort that goes effort that goes into design new product. In this article, we first describe the foundations of process improvement, which all processes can share. The process improvement differences between software and manufacturing process are then discussed, and a defect driven process inspection and improvement is introduced. Based on the discussion, two experiments were designed and the results of the results were collected. Through the comparison, we found that some efficient quality improvement approaches can be easily adapted in the software improvement and that the inspection efficiency is also significant.

Abstract

Since the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China published the GB/T19580‐2004: Criteria for Excellence Performance of China, many enterprises in China have adopted the Criteria to enhance their organization business management and to assess or self‐assess organization performance. On the bases of both the Criteria for Excellence Performance of China and the survey data from China Association for Quality (CAQ), this paper systematically explores the relationships among “leadership”, “strategy planning”, “customer and market”, “information, analysis and improvement”, “resources management”, “process management”, and “performance results” by using structural equations modeling and validates some of the anecdotal beliefs in quality management. This quantitative analysis provides a guideline for organizations in China to identify causal linkage among core value of total quality management and to identify strengths, deficiency, and opportunities to enhance competitive advantages and ensure the future business success.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new method of robust parameter design for dynamic multi‐response system. The objectives are to resolve the correlations among multiple responses and the uncertainty of system with incomplete information.

Design/methodology/approach

First, desirability function is used to measure dynamic system sensitivity and system variation, and principal component analyses on the two indices are conducted. Second, the grey relational grade (GRD) between principal component sequences of the two indices and their respective ideal sequences, gained by grey relational analysis, is converted to an integrated GRD (IGRD) index by means of TOPSIS method, and then the optimal level combination of controllable factors is identified based on the IGRD index.

Findings

It was found that the optimal factor level combination obtained by the proposed method is nearest the ideal solution and farthest from the negative ideal solution. The validity and superiority of the proposed method are confirmed through two illustrative examples.

Research limitations/implications

It should be noted that the proposed method fails to consider the interaction effects between controllable factors and noise factors.

Originality/value

The method proposed in the paper effectively integrates several common methods to optimize a dynamic multiple responses system based on Taguchi's robust parameter design. These methods do not involve complicated mathematical theory, and are therefore easy for practitioners to use in engineering practice.

Abstract

Purpose

Process mining provides a new means to improve processes in a variety of application domains. The purpose of this paper is to abstract a process model and then use the discovered models from process mining to make useful optimization via predictions.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper divides the process model into a combination of “pair-adjacent activities” and “pair-adjacent persons” in the event logs. First, two new handover process models based on adjacency matrix are proposed. Second, by adding the stage, frequency, and time for every activity or person into the matrix, another two new handover prediction process models based on stage adjacency matrix are further proposed. Third, compute the conditional probability from every stage to next stage through the frequency. Finally, use real data to analyze and demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed handover optimization process.

Findings

The process model can be extended with information to predict what will actually happen, how possible to reach the next activity, who will do this activity, and the corresponding probability if there are several people executing the same activity, etc.

Originality/value

The contribution of this paper is to predict what will actually happen, how possible it is to reach the following activities or persons in the next stage, how soon to reach the following activities or persons by calculating all the possible interval time via different traces, who will do this activity, and the corresponding probability if there are several people executing the same activity, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of job characteristics and social exchange in transformational leadership (TFL) and employability relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample is composed of 760 participants employed in Yangtze Delta and Pearl River Delta in China. The participants have worked under their line manager for more than one year. In order to better prevent data from possible common method bias, two waves of surveys (in 2014) on a stratified sample, included a mix of industries, such as construction, manufacturing, finance, insurance and communications, were used to investigate the proposed relationship between TFL, job characteristics, social exchange and employability.

Findings

The research has empirically tested the relationship between TFL and employability. While previous research has analyzed the relationship between them, the authors have enriched existing literature by exploring the mediating factors and illustrating the importance of indirect effects. Besides the direct effect, the results of this study showed that TFL could also improve employees’ employability through job demands, skill discretion, decision authority, perceived organizational support and team–member exchange, but not leader–member exchange.

Originality/value

The study opens up a debate around the employability of employees as it stands apart from the performance measurement. The authors believe that this new mediating model can provide an insight into complex mechanisms of employability enhancement from the perspective of leader development.

Abstract

Purpose

The aims of this paper is to establish an appropriate physical-change-based renewal (PCBR) projects selection mechanism capable of selecting the combination of the PCBR projects that can make up an integrated urban renewal program in high-density cities.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design follows a sequential integrated methodology that combines the calculation algorithms of Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (Fuzzy-ANP) with Zero-One Goal Programming (ZOGP) to support decisions for the selection of PCBR projects. In the first phase, general criteria for assessing the sustainability performance of PCBR projects were collected from relevant literature. In the second phase, the Fuzzy-ANP was used to identify the priority weights of the candidate projects through clarifying the interdependent degree between the criteria and candidate projects. Finally, ZOGP method was selected as a predetermined number of PCBR projects among candidate projects.

Findings

The feasibility and effectiveness of this hybrid approach is then verified in a case study of Yuzhong District, Chongqing in China. The results of this study indicate that the integrated method is capable of directing the decision maker toward the best compromising solution of PCBR program that can achieve the maximization of sustainable benefits and allocate limited resources most efficiently.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper consists in combining the algorithms of the Fuzzy-ANP method with those of the ZOGP model that serves as an effective analysis tool to address practical decision problems. This is the first hybrid algorithms to make PCBR projects selection decision that reach the maximization of the sustainable benefits, both in economic and socio-environmental terms.

Abstract

Purpose

After Ma Yingjeou's re‐election in 2012, Mainland China and Taiwan will continue cooperation in economic fields. The purpose of this paper is to undertake research on a bilateral investment agreement (BIA) between Mainland China and Taiwan.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses statistics to demonstrate the growing cross‐strait investment and incompetent contemporary investment protection mechanisms in Mainland China and Taiwan. The paper also compares laws in Mainland China and Taiwan and the investment protection agreements concluded by Mainland and Taiwan with other countries, respectively.

Findings

Based on the similarities of current laws and the investment protection agreements concluded by Mainland China and Taiwan with other countries, respectively, Mainland China and Taiwan can possibility agree upon major provisions of a BIA. Solutions are provided to both macro and micro challenges against a successful BIA.

Research limitations/implications

It is hard to predict whether the BIA will promote political integration between Mainland China and Taiwan in the near future.

Practical implications

A BIA can boost investors' confidence.

Social implications

This paper may serve as a humble reference for both the Mainland China and Taiwan government when negotiating the BIA.

Originality/value

Cross‐strait investment is an important and prosperous field in practice, but has not been fully explored in literature thus far. This Article aims to fill this gap.
