Abstract

This chapter aims to investigate and interpret China’s educational aid by analyzing its history, philosophies, and practices in Africa. The study is based on review and analysis of governmental documents, reports, academic papers, and news by Chinese and foreign scholars on China’s aid, particularly educational aid to Africa. The analysis unveils three transformations of China’s aid “from pro-ideology to de-ideology,” “from single area to multiple areas,” and “from pragmatic economy driven to sustainable and humane economy focused” in Africa. Meanwhile, it indicates a continuity of the philosophy of solidarity, morality, and reciprocity in China’s South-South cooperation with African educational development.

The analysis also shows China’s educational aid does not match well with the framework of the Western donors. China, under the FOCAC framework, is devoted to higher education cooperation, human resources training program, scholarship, and Chinese language education with African partners. With the growth of its economic and political influence, China will play multiple roles as the biggest developing country and as an active promoter and provider for South-South cooperation in the negotiation and construction of the post-2015 agenda. Nevertheless, we assume China will keep a pragmatic higher education cooperation with its developing country partners to inclusively link it with business, technology transfer, and people-to-people exchange.

This study delivers a comprehensive review and analysis of paradigm shift, philosophy, mechanism, and practice of China’s educational aid to Africa to fill up the literature gap in this field. It also timely presents China’s stance toward discussion on the post-2015 agenda.

Abstract

Supply chain is an important aspect for all the companies and can affect many aspects of companies. Especially the disruption in supply chain is causing huge impacts and consequences that are difficult to deal with. This chapter presents a review of selected multiple criteria problems used in supply chain optimization. Research analyzed the multiple criteria decision-making methods to tackle the problem of supplier evaluation and selection. It also focuses on the problem of supply chain when a disruption happens and presents strategies to deal with the issue of disruptions in supply chain and how to mitigate the impact of disruptions. Prevention, response, protection, and recovery strategies are explained. Practical part is focused in the risk-averse models to minimize expected worst-case scenario by single sourcing. Computational experiments for practical examples have been solved using CPLEX solver.

Abstract

When college entrance examinations act as gatekeepers to modern-sector jobs, the entire education system then becomes oriented toward these examinations. This occurs at the expense of learning for the sake of learning and other aspects of education that address the holistic development and well-being of students. In recent years in China, there has been growing concern that examination competition has compromised the quality of classroom teaching and learning and is detrimental to the development of skills necessary for the global knowledge economy. These concerns have given rise to a far-reaching set of education reforms known as the New Curriculum reforms which have aimed to move students to the center of teaching and learning and to transform teaching and learning so as to foster such capacities as creativity, innovation, collaboration, self-expression, engagement, enjoyment of learning, inquiry skills, problem-solving abilities, and ability to apply knowledge in practice. In this chapter, we use videotaped high school New Curriculum demonstration lessons to examine teaching and learning practices that are regarded as exemplary in the current reform context. We investigate how teachers are negotiating the competing demands of preparing students for the examinations and addressing the aims of the New Curriculum reforms. The nature of student participation in the classroom emerges in the analysis as a key indicator of the success of this negotiation.

Abstract

The economic growth of any country depends largely on the entrance to international capital inflows, that is, external investment and its optimum allotment to components of different economic sectors. In several ways, foreign direct investment (FDI) helps by creating employment opportunities and rapid economic growth in emerging countries through capital flows in the developed countries and under developed countries. Many factors are affecting the FDI inflows in emerging countries among such determinants environmental issues are play a crucial role. Pollution control, air cleaner, water cleanness, etc., are the part of the environmental regulation in any country. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and sulphur dioxide (SO2) emission are major components of air pollution that have been widely used in empirical studies. The study intends to explore the impact of environmental regulations on FDI inflows in emerging countries along with governance factors and the macroeconomic fundamentals like per capita power consumption, trade openness, per capita GDP, etc. Based on the statistical data of 15 emerging countries from 2000 to 2015, the study follows the static panel data approach to empirically find the impact of environmental issues on FDI inflows. The results reveal that significant bonding realise between environmental regulations and FDI inflows in emerging countries. Based on the statistical evaluation however best our knowledge FDI is more attractive where lower regulations are established. For sake of simplicity environmental regulations are crucial to the multinational corporations (MNCs) for investment.

Abstract

In this article we investigate the impact of the 1996 pension crisis in Russia on several measures of subjective well-being (SWB). Using a difference-in-difference strategy and an individual fixed-effects model, we find that an exogenous shock to the redistribution system has a significant negative effect on the SWB of pensioners who fail to receive their pensions. The effect differs across aspects of life evaluation; the shock has a significant negative effect on current life satisfaction (LS), whereas it has no effect on self-assessed health. The effect of the shock extends to non-pensioners who live with pensioners in arrears: they experience an equally strong and significant decline in LS even after accounting for personal income. In addition, we find that the pension crisis leads pensioner households to neither receive more nor send less money to extended family, thus leaving these households to bear alone the entire monetary cost. Lastly, we find suggestive evidence that the crisis, despite being a purely monetary shock, affects well-being in ways that go beyond the monetary size of pension loss. Policies aimed to fully compensate for such disruptions in the redistribution system would need to take these externalities into account.

A little-known “lottery fever” has spread to many parts of rural China over the past 10 years. This is driven by participation in underground lotteries with local bookies. It is called liuhecai, which is the name of the Hong Kong lottery, and is based on guessing the bonus number of the Hong Kong Mark Six lottery. Such lotteries are illegal, but are an open secret. This chapter seeks to understand the meaning of this apparently irrational lottery fever: why people participate in it, why they believe the conspiracy theory that it is rigged (and yet still participate), and why similar lotteries have emerged in both capitalist Taiwan and post-socialist China at this particular time.
