Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to investigate the role of information security policy compliance and the role of information systems auditing in identifying non-compliance in the workplace, with specific focus on the role of non-malicious insiders who unknowingly or innocuously thwart corporate information security (IS) directives by engaging in unsafe computing practices. The ameliorative effects of auditor-identified training and motivational programs to emphasize pro-security behaviors are explored.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies qualitative case analysis of technology user security perceptions combined with interpretive analysis of depth interviews with auditors to examine and explain the rubrics of non-malicious technology user behaviors in violation of cybersecurity directives, to determine the ways in which auditors can best assist management in overcoming the problems associated with security complacency among users.

Findings

Enterprise risk management benefits from audits that identify technology users who either feel invulnerable to cyber threats and exploits or feel that workplace exigencies augur for expedient workarounds of formal cybersecurity policies.

Research limitations/implications

Implications for consideration of CyberComplacency and Cybersecurity Loafing expand the insider threat perspective beyond the traditional malicious insider perspective.

Practical implications

Implications for consideration of CyberComplacency and Cybersecurity Loafing include broadened perspectives for the consultative role of IS audit in the firm.

Social implications

CyberComplacency is a practice that has great potential for harm in all walks of life. A better understanding of these potential harms is beneficial.

Originality/value

This study is the first to characterize CyberComplacency as computer users who feel they operate invulnerable platforms and are subsequently motivated to engage in less cybersecurity diligence than the company would desire. This study is also the first to characterize the notion of Cybersecurity Loafing to describe technically competent workers who take unauthorized but expedient steps around certain security polices in the name of workgroup efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM), the authors examine the influence of perceived professor teaching qualities, as central cues, on online professor ratings. Also, our study investigates how the volume and period of reviews, as peripheral cues, affect online professor ratings.

Design/methodology/approach

Leveraging stratified random sampling, the authors collect reviews of 892 Information Systems professors from 250 American universities. The authors employ regression models while conducting robustness tests through multi-level logistic regression and causal inference methods.

Findings

Our results suggest that the central route from perceived professor qualities to online professor ratings is significant, including most qualitative pedagogical factors except positive assessment. In addition to course difficulty, the effect of the peripheral route is limited due to deficient diagnosticity.

Research limitations/implications

Our primary concern about the data validity is a lack of a competing and complementary dataset. However, an institutional evaluation survey or an experimental study can corroborate our findings in future research.

Practical implications

Online professor review sites can enhance their perceived diagnosticity and credibility by increasing review vividness and promoting site interactivity. In addition to traditional institutional evaluations, professors can obtain insightful feedback from review sites to improve their teaching effectiveness.

Originality/value

To our best knowledge, this study is the first attempt to employ the ELM and accessibility-diagnosticity theory in explicating the information processing of online professor reviews. It also sheds light on various determinants and routes to persuasion, thus providing a novel theoretical perspective on online professor reviews.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the bioactivity of variable gradient TC4 porous scaffolds prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) through the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique.

Design/methodology/approach

Variable gradient TC4 porous scaffolds were prepared by SLM, then treated with MAO at different oxidation voltages. The microstructure, thickness and composition of MAO coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction. The bioactivity of the MAO coatings was tested by simulated body fluid (SBF) immersion test.

Findings

SEM and EDS results show that with the increase of oxidation voltage, the content of Ca and P elements and the thickness of the MAO coatings increases. The thickness of the coating inside the scaffold is smaller than that of the outside regions. SBF immersion experiments showed that MAO-treated TC4 porous scaffolds had highest bioactivity at 440 V.

Originality/value

The variable gradient porous scaffolds were treated with MAO in the electrolyte containing Ca and P elements for the first time. The effect of oxidation voltages on the different region of porous scaffolds was studied in detail.

Purpose

High-strength martensitic steels having strong hydrogen embrittlement (HE) susceptibility and the metal carbide (MC) nanoprecipitates of microalloying elements such as Nb, V, Ti and Mo in the steel matrix can effectively improve the HE resistance of steels. This paper aims to review the effect of MC nanoprecipitates on the HE resistance of high-strength martensitic steels.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the effects of MC nanoprecipitates on the HE resistance of high-strength martensitic steels are systematically described in terms of the types of MC nanoprecipitates, the influencing factors, along with numerical simulations.

Findings

The MC nanoprecipitates, which are fine and semicoherent with the matrix, effectively improve the HE resistance of steel through the hydrogen trapping effects and microstructure optimization, but its effect on the HE resistance of steel is controlled by its size, number and distribution state.

Originality/value

This paper summarizes the effects and mechanisms of MC nanoprecipitates on HE performance of high-strength martensitic steel and provides the theoretical basis for corrosion engineers to design high-strength martensitic steels with excellent HE resistance and improve production processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of ferrite on hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of the 17-4PH stainless steels.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of ferrite on HE of the 17-4PH stainless steels were investigated by observing microstructure and conducting slow-strain-rate tensile tests and hydrogen permeability tests.

Findings

The microstructure of the ferrite-bearing sample is lath martensite and banded ferrite, and the ferrite-free sample is lath martensite. After hydrogen charging, the plasticity of the two steels is significantly reduced, along with the tensile strength of the ferrite-free sample. The HE susceptibility of the ferrite-bearing sample is significantly lower than the ferrite-free steel, and the primary fracture modes gradually evolved from typical dimple to quasi-cleavage and intergranular cracking. After aging at 480°C for 4 h and hydrogen charging for 12 h, the 40.9% HE susceptibility of ferrite-bearing samples was the lowest. In addition, the hydrogen permeation tests show that ferrite is a fast diffusion channel for hydrogen, and the ferrite-bearing samples have higher effective hydrogen diffusivity and lower hydrogen concentration.

Originality/value

There are a few studies of the ferrite effect on the HE properties of martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel.
