Abstract

Purpose

A novel compound was synthesized by cyclohexylamine, acetophenone and cinnamaldehyde through Mannich reaction in laboratory to use as corrosion inhibitor for steel in acidification process.

Design/methodology/approach

The corrosion and inhibition of 13Cr stainless steel in conventional acidification solution were investigated by electrochemical measurements and soaking experiments. The corrosion appearance was observed with scanning electron microscope on the whole surface of 13Cr stainless steel in 20% HCl solution, and the protection film was confirmed on the surface in presence with inhibitor.

Findings

Results manifested that the inhibitor C23H27NO can effectively inhibit the corrosion reaction by forming an adsorption layer function as a barrier. Polarization curves indicated that the mixed inhibitor can reduce anodic dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution reactions simultaneously. The results of impedance measurements indicated that this inhibitor cannot change the corrosion mechanism of 13Cr stainless steel in 20% HCl solution. The results of the study can provide a theoretical basis for the application of 13Cr stainless steel in conventional acidification solutions during oil well acidification construction process.

Originality/value

A novel compound was synthesized by cyclohexylamine, acetophenone and cinnamaldehyde through Mannich reaction in laboratory to use as corrosion inhibitor for steel in acidification process. The corrosion and anti-corrosion mechanism of 13Cr steel in acid solution was proposed.

This paper aims to introduce a method to reduce corrosion caused by acidic-oxidized polymer degradant through subsection injection with different inhibitor.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a method to reduce corrosion caused by acidic-oxidized polymer degradant through subsection injection with different inhibitor.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduced a method to reduce corrosion caused by acidic-oxidized polymer degradant through subsection injection with different inhibitor.

Findings

The experimental results indicated that the influence of pre-corrosion status on corrosion rate and effectiveness of corrosion inhibitor are significant. The corrosion inhibitors in both injection stage inhibited the corrosion process by preventing the contact of corrosive medium and steel surface through formation of a protective film on the surface of N80 steel. The corrosion rate of polymer degradant can be reduced to 0.63 g/m 2 h through subsection injection with different inhibitor.

Originality/value

This result will increase the production of polymer injection plugging wells through expanding the application of acidic-oxidized polymer degradant.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the corrosion behavior and possibility of inhibition by corrosion inhibitor SA1-3 in acidizing solution (5 per cent hydrochloric acid [HCl] solution). The study aims to explain the mechanism of corrosion and inhibition of N80 steel in 5 per cent HCl solution to provide theoretical basis for expanding the range of application of N80 steel in acidification process.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper opted for a laboratory study using simulation of acidizing solution to do the experiments. The results of experiments including weight-loss method, electrochemical method and surface analysis were used to explain the mechanism of corrosion and inhibition so as to predict the dissolution progress of N80 steel in 5 per cent HCl solution with and without inhibitor SA1-3.

Findings

This paper provides theoretical insights about how to inhibit the corrosion behavior of N80 steel in 5 per cent HCl solution. It suggests that the corrosion inhibitor which can form a protective film on the steel surface should be used to expand the application of N80 steel in acidizing solution. The inhibitor SA1-3 is a kind of cathodic corrosion-controlling inhibitor which mainly inhibits cathode corrosion; it cannot change the corrosion mechanism of N80 steel.

Originality/value

This paper provides a theoretical basis for the corrosion behavior and inhibition mechanism of N80 steel in acidizing solution.

Abstract

Purpose

In this work, a kind of Mannich base (C21H25NO) was synthesized with cinnamal aldehyde, acetophenone and diethylamine in a condensing reflux device based on the conventional method. Optimization of the inhibitor concentration was explored.

Design/methodology/approach

Spectral properties of this compound was investigated by FTIR, and its inhibition efficiency and mechanism on N80 steel in 20% hydrochloric acid solution were studied by weight loss measurement, electrochemical measurement (potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and surface analytical measurement (scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectrometer).

Findings

The results showed that the new inhibitor reduced the double-layer capacitance and increased the charge transfer resistance. The inhibition efficiency is 99.7% when the concentration of C21H25NO is 3%. The adsorption of C21H25NO on N80 steel surface in 20% HCl solution was found to be spontaneous and steady. Observed from the steel surface, an inhibition film was confirmed to be presented after adding inhibitor and successfully hindered the corrosive ions from reaching the bulk steel.

Originality/value

A new Mannich base (C21H25NO) was synthesized by cinnamal aldehyde, acetophenone and diethylamine for the corrosion prevention of N80 steel in 20% hydrochloric acid solution.

The purpose of this paper is to study the effective procedure for blocking and deblocking isocyanate by sodium bisulphite with special cosolvent and dropwise method.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effective procedure for blocking and deblocking isocyanate by sodium bisulphite with special cosolvent and dropwise method.

Design/methodology/approach

A number of analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermo gravimetric analyser (TGA) were employed to assess the reactions between isocyanates and sodium bisulphite, water, cosolvent, also the deblocking temperature of blocked isocyanates.

Findings

The blocked isocyanates reacted with sodium bisulphite, water and cosolvent via a special procedure. It was found that the − NCO functional groups of the isocyanates were completely blocked by sodium bisulphite and a new method for determining the lowest deblocking temperature of the blocked isocyanates was described. It was revealed that the deblocking temperature of blocked isocyanates by sodium bisulphite was lower than others.

Practical implications

The paper provides some useful information about the blocking and deblocking of isocyanate, which would be helpful for the preparation of blocking and deblocking isocyanate, and guiding the practical applications of blocked isocyanate.

Originality/value

The investigation found that the sodium bisulphite was a very efficient blocking agent for isocyanates at the room temperature via the special procedure developed. On the basis of emulsion polymerisation theory, polymer isocyanates were blocked by sodium bisulphite, which realised the new breakthrough effectively by means of controlled temperature, stirring speed and optimum dropwise speed in the whole reaction system. Meanwhile, the special cosolvent could improve the intermiscibility of isocyanate in sodium bisulphite aqueous solution, reduce the side reaction of isocyanate with water and accelerate reaction rate of isocyanate with sodium bisulphite. If no cosolvent was present, the blocked system would not be homogeneous.

This paper aims to implement quality of service(QoS) dynamic optimization for the integrated satellite-terrestrial network(STN) of the fifth-generation Inmarsat system(Inmarsat-5).

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to implement quality of service(QoS) dynamic optimization for the integrated satellite-terrestrial network(STN) of the fifth-generation Inmarsat system(Inmarsat-5).

Design/methodology/approach

The structure and operational logic of Inmarsat-5 STN are introduced to build the graphic evaluation and review technique(GERT) model. Thus, the equivalent network QoS metrics can be derived from the analytical algorithm of GERT. The center–point mixed possibility functions of average delay and delay variation are constructed considering users' experiences. Then, the grey clustering evaluation of link QoS is obtained combined with the two-stage decision model to give suitable rewards for the agent of GERT-Q-learning, which realizes the intelligent optimization mechanism under real-time monitoring data.

Findings

A case study based on five time periods of monitoring data verifies the adaptability of the proposed method. On the one hand, grey clustering based on possibility function enables a more effective measurement of link QoS from the users' perspective. On the other hand, the method comparison intuitively shows that the proposed method performs better.

Originality/value

With the development trend of integrated communication, STN has become an important research object in satellite communications. This paper establishes a modular and extensible optimization framework whose loose coupling structure and flexibility facilitate management and development. The grey-clustering-based GERT-Q-Learning model has the potential to maximize design and application benefits of STN throughout its life cycle.

The purpose of this paper is to obtain high-solids-content and low-viscosity starch adhesive, and improve bonding strength of the pure starch adhesive.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain high-solids-content and low-viscosity starch adhesive, and improve bonding strength of the pure starch adhesive.

Design/methodology/approach

Maize starch was treated by hydrochloric acid solution with different concentrations, and acid-thinned starch adhesive was prepared. Polyisocyanate as a crosslinking agent was added to improve water resistance of the pure starch adhesive.

Findings

The physical and chemical properties of the acid-thinned starch adhesive were characterised. Acid hydrolysis did not change structure of starch granules, but increased its crystallinity. After acid modification, starch granules became less smooth and some fragments appeared. Acid treatment had little influence on thermal stability of starch, when acid hydrolysis was not strong. High concentration of HCl solution led to starch granules being destroyed, resulting in decrease in bonding strength. The optimal HCl concentration was 0.5 mol/L. Polyisocyanate addition was beneficial to improve the bonding strength of the acid-thinned starch adhesive.

Research limitations/implications

Acid hydrolysis changed the properties of the starch adhesive.

Practical implications

Acid hydrolysis decreased viscosity of the starch adhesive and improved its solids content, which had a positive effect on the application of the starch adhesive.

Social implications

It was helpful to develop an environment-friendly, natural polymer-based wood adhesive.

Originality/value

The properties of acid-thinned starch and acid-thinned starch adhesive were studied.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate associations between the organisational and cultural contexts in which Chinese teachers work, the influence of these on their understandings of professionalism, and relationships between these and their perceived willingness and commitment to be effective in teaching to their best.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was part of a two-country collaboration between the universities of Beijing and Sydney into Australian and Chinese teachers' perceptions of influences on their professionalism in which research protocols were jointly developed and implemented. This paper focusses mainly upon the Chinese research but also refers to key differences between Australian and Chinese teachers' perspectives. Seventeen teachers in early, middle and later career phases were recruited from a convenience sample of primary and secondary schools in Beijing. Qualitative data analyses of individual interviews, and cross case comparative analyses were conducted.

Findings

The analyses of the data from Beijing indicated that almost all teachers emphasised their strong moral purposes and commitment to teach to their best, despite identifying the challenges of workload, school contexts and cultures and personal circumstances, which tested their resolve. In contrast, concerns about teacher autonomy and agency, which were common in the Australian study and other published research literature, were not highly visible in the Chinese data.

Research limitations/implications

The authors acknowledge that this study was small scale and data were collected from a narrow sample from one urban region of China, and we should be cautious with the generalisability of findings to other regions and schools of China since there are significant discrepancies between developed coastal areas and large cities and the remote rural areas in China. Furthermore, interview data were only collected once, restricting insight to a snapshot in time. This research may be seen as an encouragement to researchers from other regions and countries to further explore the impact of socially situated understandings of teacher professionalism on practice. Future research could also benefit from utilising multiple data sources, longitudinal design and cross-cultural collaborations to further explore the challenge of defining teachers' understandings of professionalism locally while engaging with global perspectives.

Practical implications

The practical implications relate to (1) expanding conceptualisations of teacher professionalism by developing locally nuanced understandings of perceptions and enactments of professionalism in different contexts across the profession, which take account of the unique roles of national and local cultural contexts; (2) designing initial teacher education and continuing professional development programmes so that they take account of the influences on the professions' ideals and individual teacher identities, of the ideological and practical interplay in the workplace of structures such as mandated standards, and different socio-economic geographical settings (e.g. rural and urban); (3) designing leadership development programmes that take account of research on associations between school leaders' values, qualities and practices on school cultures and their effects on teachers' well-being, and capacities and capabilities to fulfil their understandings of being professionals and teach to their best.

Social implications

The social implications relate to (1) further research on the associations between the effects of external policy demands on teachers' work and work–life tensions, teachers' sustained commitment and quality; and (2) further research on the impact of the collective influences of national cultures, broad-based policy conditions, personal values and the demands of particular schools, parents and students that influence teachers' experience, perceptions and enactments of professionalism in order to provide further insights into understanding the complexity of teachers' lives and promoting teachers' sustained enactments of professionalism in broad contexts.

Originality/value

The research findings, though tentative, revealed that the altruistic nature of their mission to serve students and the parental community was the dominant marker of professionalism for teachers in China, regardless of school structures, cultures, academic achievement imperatives and personal circumstance; and that their professionalism was informed by the socio-cultural formation of individual and collective moral responsibility, reinforced through national educational policies. These findings differed from the concerns reported by the teachers in the Australian study, which aligned with literature that suggests that teacher professionalism is being eroded through neo-liberal government policies, excessive workloads and performance-oriented cultures. Though the comparative data set is small, these findings suggest that whilst there are increasing policy convergences across nations, which seek to define teacher professionalism through their abilities to make improvements in students' measurable academic achievement, how teachers in different countries and cultures define themselves as professionals may differ.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of trailing liquid nitrogen (LN2) heat sink on arc welding of mild steel plates. The effect on temperature field, stress and distortions are studied using experimental and numerical methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology consists of experimental and numerical methods. The temperature measured at a point near the arc is used to estimate the cooling capacity of the heat sink using inverse heat transfer (IHT) method. The estimated cooling flux is applied to the finite element model to study the stress and distortions using LN2 heat sink. The stresses are measured using X‐ray diffraction technique and the distortions using dial gauges.

Findings

IHT method has been employed in estimating the cooling capacity of the LN2 jet. This has been applied to welding to study the effect on weld induced stresses and distortions. The method can be extended to calculate the heat removal rate in various manufacturing processes where cooling is employed.

Research limitations/implications

The lack of temperature dependent material properties resulted in deviation of stresses between analytical results and experiment values.

Originality/value

IHT method developed for heat removal capacity of trailing heat sink is a contribution. The estimated heat flux shows good agreement in analytical and experimental temperature values. These temperatures have been extended to calculate stresses and out of plane distortions in welding and there is a reasonable agreement between finite element analysis and experimental results.

Abstract

Purpose

The mechanisms of the deblocking reaction of the polyurethane with blocking agent were investigated in detail relatively using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This kind of method for polyurethane as the application of wood adhesives can provide the conditions of application and the main theoretical basis.

Design/methodology/approach

The blocking rate and latex particle size distribution were determined using the titrimetric analysis and the laser particle analysis, respectively. TGA, FTIR, XPS and differential scanning calorimetry were used to investigate the deblocking temperature and time of the blocked isocyanate in detail.

Findings

The results indicated that the blocking rate was approximately 97 per cent and the average particle size was 360 nm. The results of laser particle analysis have confirmed that the dispersivity of the blocked polyurethane emulsion was good. XPS results showed that the amount of –O = C-N-benzyl groups increased with an increasing deblocking temperature and subsequently reached equilibrium. In summary, the blocked isocyanate was deblocked at temperatures ranging from 50 to 90°C.

Research limitations/implications

An important approach in future wood adhesive work would be to gain access to man-made board application data.

Practical implications

The paper provided some useful information about deblocking mechanisms of blocked polyurethane that would be helpful to guide applied practical applications as wood adhesive.

Social implications

To promote China’s wood processing technology progress and solve the problem of shortage of the natural quality of wood is of important practical significance.

Originality/value

The paper is the first to use the XPS characterisation method to characterise deblocking polyurethane solution.
