Abstract

In this study, the stationary flow of a polymeric fluid governed by the upper convected Maxwell law is computed in a 2‐D convergent geometry. A finite element method is used to obtain non‐linear discretized equations, solved by an iterative Picard (fixed point) algorithm. At each step, two sub‐systems are successively solved. The first one represents a Newtonian fluid flow (Stokes equations) perturbed by known pseudo‐body forces expressing fluid elasticity. It is solved by minimization of a functional of the velocity field, while the pressure is eliminated by penalization. The second sub‐system reduces to the tensorial differential evolution equation of the extra‐stress tensor for a given velocity field. It is solved by the so‐called ‘non‐consistent Petrov‐Galerkin streamline upwind’ method. As with other decoupled techniques applied to this problem, our simulation fails for relatively low values of the Weissenberg viscoelastic number. The value of the numerical limit point depends on the mesh refinement. When convergence is reached, the numerical solutions for velocity, pressure and stress fields are similar to those obtained by other authors with very costly mixed methods.

Abstract

A technique for computing free surfaces by a steady state approach has been included in the hot rolling code ROLL3. It has been described in a previous paper, along with applications to some simple rolling passes. In the present text, new developments are included to deal with more complex geometries, in particular when several potentially free surfaces exist. The problem of contact with flanks of grooves is given special care. Application to dog bone formation and flattening is presented. Then a case with two free surfaces is computed and compared to experiments. An application is then performed to beam roughing passes.

Abstract

A two‐grid iterative method for 3D linear elasticity problems, discretized using quadratic tetrahedral elements is proposed. The conjugate‐gradient method is used as smoother. As compared to the conjugate‐gradient alone, it is shown, via numerical examples, that the method is much more efficient on the basis of computing time and memory allocation. The convergence property of the method is sensitive to the regularity of the problem.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate thermally and hydrodynamically fully developed convection in a duct of rectangular cross-section containing a porous medium and fluid layer.

Design/methodology/approach

The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer flow model is adopted. A finite difference method of second-order accuracy with the Southwell-over-relaxation method is deployed to solve the non-dimensional momentum and energy conservation equations under physically robust boundary conditions.

Findings

It is found that the presence of porous structure and different immiscible fluids exert a significant impact on controlling the flow. Graphical results for the influence of the governing parameters i.e. Grashof number, Darcy number, porous media inertia parameter, Brinkman number and ratios of viscosities, thermal expansion and thermal conductivity parameters on the velocity and temperature fields are presented. The volumetric flow rate, skin friction and rate of heat transfer at the left and right walls of the duct are also provided in tabular form. The numerical solutions obtained are validated with the published study and excellent agreement is attained.

Originality/value

To the author’s best knowledge this study original in developing the numerical code using FORTRAN to assess the fluid properties for immiscible fluids. The study is relevant to geothermal energy systems, thermal insulation systems, resin flow modeling for liquid composite molding processes and hybrid solar collectors.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a selective bibliography for researchers working with bulk material forming (specifically the forging, rolling, extrusion and drawing processes) with sources which can help them to be up‐to‐date.

Design/methodology/approach

A range of published (1996‐2005) works, which aims to provide theoretical as well as practical information on the material processing namely bulk material forming. Bulk deformation processes used in practice change the shape of the workpiece by plastic deformations under forces applied by tools and dies.

Findings

Provides information about each source, indicating what can be found there. Listed references contain journal papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations on the subject.

Research limitations/implications

It is an exhaustive list of papers (1,693 references are listed) but some papers may be omitted. The emphasis is to present papers written in English language. Sheet material forming processes are not included.

Practical implications

A very useful source of information for theoretical and practical researchers in computational material forming as well as in academia or for those who have recently obtained a position in this field.

Originality/value

There are not many bibliographies published in this field of engineering. This paper offers help to experts and individuals interested in computational analyses and simulations of material forming processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compute flow effects of the transition from adherence-to-slip in two-dimensional flows, for a polymer melt obeying a memory-integral viscoelastic equation, in isothermal and non-isothermal cases.

Design/methodology/approach

Temperature dependence is expressed by Arrhenius and William-Landel-Ferry models. A coupling approach is defined. For the dynamic equations, the Stream-Tube Method (STM) is used with finite differences in a mapped rectangular domain of the real domain, where streamlines are parallel and straight. STM avoids particle-tracking problems and allows simple formulae to evaluate stresses resulting from the constitutive equation. For the temperature field, a finite-element method is carried out to solve the energy equation in the real domain.

Findings

The approach avoids numerical problems arising with classical formulations and proves to be robust and efficient. Large elasticity levels are attained without convergence and refinement difficulties that may arise close to the “stick-slip” transition section. The method highlights the role of temperature conditions and reveals interesting differences for the ducts considered.

Practical implications

The results of the study are of interest for polymer processing where slip at the wall can be encountered, in relation with the physical properties of the materials.

Originality/value

The paper presents a simple approach that limits considerably numerical problems coming from stick-slip boundary conditions and avoids particle-tracking. Results are obtained at flow rates encountered in industrial conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper intends to compare the sustainability reporting (SR) in three different national and institutional contexts, namely Italy, Brazil and USA, and aims to investigate whether companies show a different approach to SR depending on the institutional setting where they operate.

Design/methodology/approach

To reach this goal, a sample of 150 reports was content-analyzed through a methodology based on a coding process which overcomes part of the limitations in previous works.

Findings

Results observed a relationship between the SR and the characteristics of institutional contexts, thus suggesting that while there is a general acceptance and use of international SR standards and initiatives, the content is influenced by and shaped on the characteristics of the national institutional context. In other words, although a widely diffused base of data and information can be found in the SR of companies in different contexts, the accent is put on specific issues which reflect the political, cultural, religious, legal and otherwise defined institutions in the national system.

Originality/value

Using the institutional theory the paper demonstrated that institutional contexts is one of the drivers of contents of sustainability reports.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the integrated behavioural model as a theoretical framework, this study aims to identify salient beliefs underlying intention to save regularly among Gen Ys in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 participants who were selected using purposive and snowball sampling methods.

Findings

While Gen Ys are not pushed by others to save, they find that older people (parents, parents-in-law, colleagues and relatives) influence them to save. The main facilitator of regular saving behaviour is low financial commitments. Expenses, particularly unexpected expenses, was found to be the main factor impeding the performance of regular saving. Overall, the participants feel that, irrespective of what happens in the future, they want to continue saving regularly. Lastly, self-efficacy might be present for some participants, but not self-control. Some end up withdrawing their savings for spending, emergency, and travel, thus ending up almost depleting their savings.

Research limitations/implications

Of this study’s 13 interviewees, only one has not managed to save any money. Such an imbalanced sample composition was not deliberate. It appears those who have not saved money were reluctant to be interviewed, as this topic might be uncomfortable for them. This could have led to only those who save being eager to be interviewed.

Practical implications

Policy makers should find this study useful, as the behaviour of Gen Ys in Malaysia is different from the overall perception of Malaysians’ financial behaviours. Gen Ys have positive attitudes towards saving money, although they do not seem to practice long-term saving. Policymakers could identify, with banks and the Employee Provident Fund, ways to encourage Gen Ys to think long term. Government could play its part by creating and increasing awareness amongst Gen Ys on the long-term consequences of inadequate savings.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by identifying the salient beliefs underlying regular saving behaviour through the conduct of elicitation interviews. It is an empirically grounded study enhancing the understanding of intention to perform regular saving among Gen Ys in an emerging market.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine a comparative analysis of electronic- and paper-based data collection methods.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey research approach was adopted to conduct the study. A total of 500 library and information science (LIS) researcher/information professionals selected randomly from seven states in Nigeria represent the sample for the study. A self-designed questionnaire was used to gather data from the respondents. Six objectives were developed to guide the study.

Findings

The findings reveal that there is preference for paper-based than the electronic-based data collection methods, and similarly, respondents indicated they cannot use any other data collection methods other than paper-based. Electronic data collection method is beneficial in terms of gathering a representative sample within a short period compared to the paper-based method. The researcher has control over access to the survey in the paper-based method compared to the electronic method, and there is opportunity to monitor the progress of the research and clarify ambiguity by the researcher. The electronic method is limited in terms of collecting data from only the respondents who are computer-literate with good Web skills, while the paper-based method is limited by higher attrition rate, money and time consumption.

Research limitations/implications

The study did not consider the time needed to gather data with each method or the amount of time needed for data entry, cleaning and coding. It is possible that a time-motion study would reveal clear superiority of either one method or the other. The total sample of participants in the study is also limited, considering the total number of LIS researcher/information professionals in Nigeria.

Practical implications

The study has underlined the value of electronic/Web-based collection as a cost- and time-saving instrument in modern LIS research. Regardless of method and trial, electronic data collection could fulfill in all examined parameters, its promises, realizing cost savings of up to a 50 per cent in comparison with the paper-based data collection method.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of the general satisfaction index (GSI) concept is a great way to measure the organizational climate. However, the traditional concept has an inaccurate calculation approach. In order to review this concept, the purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to obtain this index through a more appropriate mathematical approach, supported by some linear algebra concepts. For this purpose, an organizational climate survey was carried out in a bank agency to exemplify application of this method. Each step of the application was detailed, as well as the intermediate results achieved. Among its principal benefits are: improved accuracy to obtain the GSI; the possibility of a comparison with a minimum required rate for the decision-making process; and the possibility of identifying the order of priority of the organizational climate dimensions that mostly need improvements.

Design/methodology/approach

The working method was divided into three parts. The first part consists of the collection of data on employee satisfaction through a questionnaire based on Luz (2003) considerations and presented in a research performed by Maciel (2011), which uses 27 pertinent questions directed to the context of a banking system. These questions were answered on a scale from 0 to 4, where 0 means a very negative satisfaction condition and 4 a very positive one. The second part dealt with the application of the methodology for calculating GSI. The third and final part consisted of proposing improvements to increase the GSI of the studied bank agency.

Findings

In general, the proposed method has proved to be a great ally to climate research and also to identify the need for improvements in banking context. Finally, the use of the 5W2H tool has proved important to improve weak points observed in the climate analysis, providing an initial guide to raise the agency’s GSI and achieve the goals pursued by the company. It is noteworthy that, due to the fact that improvement actions have been inferred based on direct observation, there is still a need for further analysis and/or debates about the impact and viability of these solutions.

Originality/value

The proposed method turns GSI into a more accurate and appropriate tool, making it even more valuable in decision-making process faced by human resources departments focussed on improving or maintaining the organizational climate. To illustrate the application of the new approach regarding this tool, an organizational climate study in a bank branch is conducted.
